Villain Overview

Laserbeak is a supporting antagonist in the Transformers multiverse.

He is a Decepticon spy and assassin working for the Decepticon Soundwave and is often regarded highly by their master Megatron. In all of his incarnations, Laserbeak's standard form is that of a bird-like creature.

In the original cartoon, he was voiced by Frank Welker, who also voiced Megatron and Soundwave. In Dark of the Moon, he is voiced by Keith Szarabajka, who also voiced El Mago in Dora the Explorer, the Didact in Halo 4, Joshua Graham in Fallout: New Vegas and Mr. Freeze in Young Justice.

Biography[]

Generation One[]

The original incarnation of Laserbeak was a Decepticon spy and one of Soundwave's minions. He could transform into a cassette and playback his intel on any tape-playing device. As well as a spy, Laserbeak is an expert hunter and will pursue any target relentlessly. He can fire lasers from his eyes as well as from the blaster pods attached to his body. The blasters can even detach and pursue targets independently.

Marvel Comics[]

Laserbeak was one of the original Decepticons in the first miniseries, participating in early operations like a battle with the Autobots at a drive-thru and the first full-scale engagement at Witwicky's garage. In the first UK original story "Man of Iron", he is among the Decepticons who travel to England to try and retrieve an Autobot spacecraft. He is frequently depicted as talking in the miniseries, which was quickly dropped from the US stories in favour of him making animal noises as per the cartoon. He would continue to talk in the early UK stories before this was phased out.

He continued to appear during Shockwave's tenure as Decepticon leader, helping to take over the Blackrock Aerospace facility needed to construct more Decepticons, trying to abduct Buster Witwicky and helping ambush the Autobots. During Soundwave's command in the UK stories, he delivered a message about Bumblebee's capture to Optimus Prime and was used by Jetfire to stop a rampaging Slag, being shoved into the Dinobot's mouth and fried. In US Issue #15, he helped Soundwave revive a frozen Megatron, and later helped Shockwave attempt to capture Bumblebee.

In US Issue #19, he joined most of Megatron's original command in attacking the Ark and was one of the few survivors of the following battle with Omega Supreme, carrying Megatron away from the battle. Despite this, he appeared less as newer characters were introduced. He helped Soundwave stop Joy Meadows' expose in "In the National Interest", instantly accepted Galvatron as a future version of Megatron in "Target: 2006" and was beaten up by Death's Head in "Hunters".

One of his more prominent later appearances was in US Issue #31, where he served as the assistant to new Decepticon leader Ratbat as he used rigged car washes to hypnotise humans into delivering fuel to the Decepticons. Laserbeak and Ratbat were both driven off by the freed humans. He made his last present day appearance in Issue #50 during the Underbase saga. After two groups of Decepticons formed an alliance with the Autobots against the Underbase-powered Starscream, Laserbeak joined a unit led by Fortress Maximus and Soundwave who defended Buenos Aires and was among the many killed in the battle.

His only later appearance was in Issue #67, in an alternate future where the Decepticons had conquered North America. He ambushed the Autobot Crossblades above the Decepticons' base, contributing to his death but failing to stop him destroying their shield generator.

Other Versions[]

Transformers: Animated[]

Laserbeak appears in Transformers: Animated once again in the service of Soundwave. As well as his standard avian form, Laserbeak can also transform into an electric guitar. Soundwave will often use Laserbeak's guitar mode to strike the Autobots with sonic attacks. He escaped with Soundwave's memory chip offline stuck forever as a sound box while Ratbat was destroyed.

Transformers: Prime[]

In the Rendered 3D Prime series, Laserbeak is little more than a mindless drone, although still quite effective. He is armed with lasers in his wings, and appears to be designed for reconnaissance and surveillance. His bird-like form looks almost paper-thin, giving him the appearance of an origami sculpture. He was sent to capture the human Agent Fowler who reported through radio communication that he was leaving the Autobot base and when spying on Starscream to see what he was doing with the dead body of Megatron afloat in space after the space bridge explosion.

In One Shall Rise, Part 3, the Decepticon Airachnid wanted to abandon Megatron in the center of the Earth hoping that Unicron will kill or trap him, so she decided to set the Decepticon ship for an astronomic place called Regulon 4. Soundwave stepped in since he did not want Megatron left behind, and he quickly defeated Airachnid in battle using Laserbeak who shot lasers at Airachnid.

In Minus One, Soundwave is captured by the Autobots, but Laserbeak escaped. Later, he follows special agent William Fowler to the Autobot base, Laserbeak then helped his master escape with Ratchet, the medic of the Autobots. Laserbeak also had a piece of his wing clipped off during the rescue.

Dark of The Moon[]

Main article: Laserbeak (Transformers Film Series)

Laserbeak served as a supporting antagonist in the 2011 film. He is first seen in Africa with Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, and Igor. Unlike other incarnations, this version of Laserbeak could speak and possessed a cunning and vicious personality. As well as his usual bird-like form, this version of Laserbeak could utilize multiple alternate modes and has been seen turning into a computer and even a pink, human-sized version of Bumblebee.

Transformers: Cyberverse[]

Laserbeak served as a pet partner to Soundwave, appearing more like a bird completed with it's own personality and calls. Like his G1 counterpart he turns into a cassette. He can shares things Soundwave scanned like the code for the Loop and record things he sees.

Originally a Cybertronian bird that lived in the wild along with the rest of his kind, one day Soundwave made bird noises to lure birds towards him so he could capture one. He eventually managed to catch Laserbeak who tried to fight back but eventually gave in and became his partner.

Laserbeak first appeared in the episode "Dark Birth" where he gets in a dogfight with Windblade. During the war for Cybertron, Laserbeak took part in the War alongside his master. When the Quintessons's scientist captured both Soundwave and Hot Rod Soundwave ejected Laserbeak to escape and share the code for the Loop with the others.

During the final battle against Tarn, Soundwave ejected Laserbeak to distract Tarn long enough to snatch the Helm and reprogram the Perfect Decepticons to gain free will. But when Tarn regained the Helm Soundwave sacrifices himself to destroy Tarn and the Helm leaving Laserbeak behind who called out to his deceased master. But thankefully he was adopted by Soundwave's close friend Shadow Striker.

Transformers: Earthspark[]

In Transformers: Earthspark, Laserbeak appears with Ravage and Frenzy. He is one of Soundwave's Mini-Cons. Unlike other incarnations, the Laserbeak in this show has the ability to speak. He first battled with Optimus Prime and Megatron. Later, with the Terrans.

On the 18th episode, "Home", Laserbeak and Frenzy hosted a Bot Brawl, where the winner gets a supply of Energon.
