The Last Engineer is the main antagonist of the 2012 science fiction horror film Prometheus.
He is a member of the Engineers, an enigmatic extraterrestrial species that are known for their advanced technology in genetic engineering, being the creators of humanity.
The Last Engineer was tasked to annihilate all of humanity with the black goo pathogen for unknown reasons. But he had to put himself into cryo-sleep due to a containment breach regarding the black goo, making him the only Engineer left on Lv-223. He would eventually be woken up by the same species he was said to destroy.
He was portrayed by Ian Whyte, who also portrayed Scar, Celtic and Chopper in Alien vs. Predator, Wolf in Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, Garraka in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and both Gregor Clegane and Dongo in Game of Thrones.
Appearance[]
Like all other members of his species, this Engineer stood at around 2.44–2.74 m (8’-9’) in length and had a very muscular build. The skin had a clear pale complexion with the entire body and head being completely hairless. The brow ridges were large, and he overall had very well-defined pronounced facial features, furthermore, the eyes are completely black.
His uniform appeared to be made from some form of biological matter, as it seemed to integrate with his body at the wrist sections. The apparel was grey in color with a bio-mechanical aesthetic to it. When controlling the spaceship, he began to wear the standard Engineer helmet that had elephantine features.
Personality[]
The true nature of this Engineer is mostly enigmatic like the rest of his race, but he did portray himself as being clearly misanthropic, even though the exact reasoning for this is unknown. He decided to kill the humans who awoke him, presumably from his moral disagreement of seeing David, who is a conscious being that is not formed from any organic material, as he's an android. Additionally, this Engineer appeared to be extremely loyal to his general obligations, immediately continuing with his goal of exterminating humanity only moments after having been woken up from his over two millennia long cryosleep, which gives off an impression of extreme commitment.
His misanthropy combined with his devotion made this Engineer also appear to be very wrathful, having no problems with using physical violence to assert his will and he spend the last moments of his life attempting to chase and kill Elizabeth Shaw, all because she got in the way of his cause.
Story[]
Past[]
Two thousand years before the events of Prometheus, around the year 93, this Engineer was positioned on the moon LV-223 and worked with his fellow Engineers on developing and containing a black goo mutagen that had the ability to both destroy and shape new lifeforms.
They had a target: Earth, to use the mutagen to wipe out humanity. However, they apparently lost control of the mutagen, which led to the deaths of most of the Engineers at the base. The Engineer, along with three of his brethren, took refuge within their ship and stored themselves within their ship's Sarcophagi; the Engineer's brethren died as their chambers ceased to function, leaving the individual as the sole survivor.
Prometheus[]
Centuries later, in 2089, archeologists Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway discovered a star map among several unconnected ancient cultures within a cave during an expedition on the Isle of Skye. They interpreted the map as an invitation from their creators, the Engineers. Shaw then contacted Peter Weyland, the elderly CEO of Weyland Corp, seeking funding for an expedition to follow the star map. Weyland agreed with the proposal, and funded the creation of the scientific vessel USCSS Prometheus to follow the map to the distant moon LV-223.
He was still in Sarcophagi, when the Prometheus crew arrived in 2093. They explored the moon's surface, where they came across the Engineer Temple. The crew entered the structure and discovered the bodies of some Engineers, as well as several "urns" stored within the structure. The crew's interference caused the pathogen stored within the "urns" to melt, A few crew members were exposed to the pathogen, and in the ensuing chaos most were killed. David found him, and reported this discovery to his dying creator Peter Weyland, who was secretly aboard the ship the entire time and wanted to ask the Engineer to extend his lifespan. To this end, Weyland and his team traveled to the Engineers' ship to commune with the last Engineer. After awakening the Engineer, David attempted to speak to him in Proto-Indo-European in order to explain Weyland's request. After a brief conversation, the Engineer responded by decapitating David and murdering Weyland and his entire team, except for Shaw, who managed to escape.
The Engineer equipped himself with his bio-–suit and reactivated his ship to head for Earth to carry out his original mission to destroy the human race. The remaining crew later sacrificed themselves and the Prometheus to destroy the Engineer's ship. The Engineer, however, had survived the crash, and attacked Shaw within Vickers' FTL Lifeboat. Shaw released the Trilobite she had extracted earlier from her womb as the result of intercourse with Holloway, who was infected by the pathogen, which restrained and impregnated the Engineer as Shaw escaped. The Engineer later died as a strange creature emerged from his chest.
Trivia[]
