I'm good with calculation. I've handled all their investments. One big pot.
~ Lau's most famous quote.

Lau is a supporting antagonist in the 2008 superhero film The Dark Knight, the second installment of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy.

Originally he appeared to be a legitimate Chinese businessman who served as the founder and owner Lau Security Investments working in Gotham City. However, it soon turned out that he is actually a corrupt accountant for the Gotham Mob by laundering their money via organised-crime activities.

He was portrayed by Ng Chin Han, who also played Shang Tsung in the 2021 film adaptation of Mortal Kombat and voiced Sonny Wo in Sleeping Dogs.

Biography[]

Lau is the CEO of Lau Security Investments, a major business in Hong Kong whose success drew the attention of Wayne Enterprises, although his business pitch proved unsuccessful. Lau had also been complicit for an unknown period of time to be working with Gotham's organized crime as their personal accountant. When the Gotham City Police Department had begun planning an attack on the mob, Lau secured the money, although the Joker warned them that Lau would be captured by Batman first and would inevitably rat them all out.

Joker's warnings, which were laughed at by the mobsters, proved true. Batman had traveled to Hong Kong and extradited Lau back to Gotham and into the custody of the GCPD's Major Crimes Unit. At the threat of arrest and transfer to the county prison, Lau agreed to become an informant for the GCPD and to testify in court in exchange for amnesty and safe passage back to China. Lau gives out the names of several of his clients in the Gotham mob, including Sal Maroni and the Chechen, who the GCPD all arrests in a fell swoop under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).

However, in their desperation, the mob hired the Joker to sabotage the prosecution by killing the judge presiding the court, and Gotham's Commissioner Loeb. Ultimately, the Joker constructs an elaborate plan which results in his capture and escapes from the GCPD police station, escaping with Lau, who was kept in a straitjacket above the Joker's share of the money as punishment for betraying the mobsters. Lau died when the Joker ignited his half of the money, and Lau with it, to make a statement to the mob that "everything burns".
