Some people believe the spirit stays in the body for months after death.
~ Laura to Andy and Piper after their father's funeral.

Laura is the main antagonist of the 2025 Australian supernatural horror film Bring Her Back.

She is a grieving mother who attempts to resurrect her deceased 12-year old daughter, Cathy, through a dark occult ritual. She is driven to extremes by her grief and the belief that her daughter's soul remains connected to her body for a short time after death.

Laura's actions escalate from manipulation and deception to outright murder as she tries to create a host body for Cathy's soul, ultimately targeting Piper, another foster child in her care.

She was portrayed by Sally Hawkins.

Biography[]

Prior[]

Before the events of the film, Laura used to be a trained counselor who had a daughter named Cathy who unfortunately died when she hit her head and drowned in the pool.

blackangeltapes[]

Seeking any way to resurrect her daughter, Laura (under the username PomPom) through reference from an enigmatic user called Empress, comes across the blackangeltapes website. One of the items listed were the Tari Ressurection Tapes, which shows how to use the demon called Tari in a ritual to bring back the dead. Having the instructions at hand, she prepares for the ritual, choosing Connor Bird as the host for the demon, and uses her connections to find a host for Cathy's soul, who she'd kill in the same way that her daughter died. Afterwards, Tari would consume the original body and purge it into the mouth of the new body. She places Tari inside of Connor while housing Cathy's body in a deep freezer. During her preparation, she would run into complications caused by making reckless decisions regarding her handling of Tari, leading the users on the website to ridicule and eventually quit on her.

Bring Her Back[]

After the death of their father, Andy and his visually impaired younger sibling Piper are sent to live in foster care with Laura immediately taking a liking for the girl, fashioning her to resemble her deceased daughter. She spends a duration of the film trying to drive a wedge between Andy and Piper, gaslighting him into thinking he was wetting himself and spritzing herself with his cologne and punching Piper to make her think that it was him. She also sabotages his sleep by drugging his protein shakes. As for Oliver, she keeps him locked up, constantly telling him that it wasn't time yet. But due to the angel’s requirement to eat the original body of the deceased person, the entity possessed a ravenous appetite and continued to grow more and more hungry.

Andy goes to convince the social worker Wendy that Laura was dangerous and had kidnapped Oliver, eventually getting her to come with him. Around that time, the angel within Laura grows tired of waiting and bites into her arm and even rips strips of his flesh off to eat it. Realizing that Wendy was coming, Laura desperately tries to clean the house but Wendy becomes concerned over her rambling. Wendy sees the body of Cathy and Oliver consuming it and tries to escape with Andy only for Laura to hit them both with her car. She then drowns Andy in a puddle of water.

Picking up Piper, she reveals her true nature and attempts to drown her in the pool (having waited for the rain to fill it up), but she ends up being unable to carry her plan to its fruition due to Piper resisting too much and Cathy’s soul not being able to enter her body. Piper escapes and Laura digs into her wounded arm, going to collect Cathy's body. The angel chases after Piper, but after noticing a missing poster with his photo on it, Oliver regains some of his senses and overpowers the angelic being. He then walks over the circle, which causes the being to be expelled from his body and returned to wherever it came from, and Oliver then returns to normal.

The film ends with Laura in the pool, possibly having taken her own life, cradling her daughter’s corpse in her arms as the police surround her.

What happened to Laura after this is unknown. But considering she was found by the police cradling a dead body, And Oliver more than likely testified against her for kidnapping him as well as the fact that the police would find out that she killed both Wendy and Andy, Laura, if alive, was likely arrested and sent to prison with a life sentence.
