~ Michaud's description of destroying the world in cycle 677.
|
|
Dr. Laurence Michaud is a villainous protagonist in the SCP Foundation series, serving as the main protagonist of D. Ulysses Foole's SCP-001 proposal. He is a member of the O5 Council who, after experiencing SCP-UBU's eternal rampage across the Earth, becomes obsessed with using SCP-001 to reset the timeline and defeat UBU at any cost, slowly losing his mind over the course of the proposal until he becomes no better than UBU.
Biography[]
Michaud was one of the 13 members of the O5 Council, the enigmatic council of overseers that presides over the SCP Foundation. Michaud had the designation O5-11. On 12 May 2588, during Michaud's time on the council, the Earth underwent a ΩK/A-class Augmented "End-of-Death" scenario when all multicellular life on Earth suddenly became immortal and began involuntarily regenerating from any and every injury and illness. This coincided with the sudden appearance of SCP-UBU, an immense humanoid entity first sighted in Greenland, and the cessation of all interdimensional gateways and anomalies related to the Three Moons Initiative. The Foundation would later trace the end of death back to anomalous radiation generated by SCP-UBU.
Over the next 441 years, SCP-UBU made it its mission to torture every living thing on Earth as much as possible for its own amusement, using the regenerative effect to make sure its victims would survive whatever it did to them. Michaud was victimized by UBU during the early days of its rampage when it impaled his wife on a broom handle before stripping him naked, forcibly bathing him in a puddle of raw sewage and rubbing his wife all over him like a scrubbing brush while whistling a bath song. Michaud and the rest of the Foundation tried everything in their power to stop UBU, but every attempt was met with failure and UBU's rampage continued until the Earth's entire landmass was left uninhabitable, with all but 140 humans putting themselves into permanent comas to escape from SCP-UBU (known as "entering the Zonk Pile"). The remainder of humanity, including Michaud, were localized to the SCP Foundation ship, the SCPS Naismith.
In January 3030, SCP-UBU located the Naismith and began swimming towards it. The remainder of the O5 Council held an emergency meeting during which Michaud became frustrated with his fellow council member's apathy towards stopping UBU and advocated using the SCPS Corncrake, a Foundation vessel carrying the few anomalies dangerous enough for the Foundation to bother to continue containing. Upon realizing that the council's only plan was to join the rest of humanity in the Zonk Pile, Michaud left and relocated to the Corncrake. The anomalies aboard included SCP-076-2, whose bloodlust had been quenched now that nobody could die, SCP-YEZ, a consciousness-sharing anomaly, SCP-001, a time machine capable of resetting the timeline by 15, 000 years but that would only work if the universe was destroyed, and SCP-319, an anomaly capable of destroying the universe if opened. His plan was to blow up SCP-319's containment chamber, unleashing it and allowing him to use SCP-001, giving him 15, 000 years to work out how to stop SCP-UBU. However, as he was charging up SCP-001 he was attacked by SCP-UBU, which began humping the side of the machine while whistling the bath tune, terrorizing him into a heart attack. Fortunately SCP-076-2 came to his defence and attacked UBU, allowing Michaud to set off SCP-001 and escape into the past with SCP-YEZ and several hominid replicators from SCP-2000, which he would use to keep himself alive.
Michaud kept himself alive for 15, 000 years by replicating his body with the hominid replicators and using SCP-YEZ to share his consciousness with them. He was discovered inside SCP-001 by the Foundation in 1993, designated PoI-8048 and interviewed by the Foundation. He attempted to convince them of his authenticity and to help him stop SCP-UBU when it appeared, but they refused because his plan was too destructive to the general public and the O5 Council ordered him terminated. He was executed by Dr. Isaiah Henderson, but survived by possessing several Foundation members using SCP-YEZ before detonating SCP-319, destroying the world and allowing him to use SCP-001 again.
In total, Michaud went through 677 cycles trying to stop SCP-UBU, destroying and resetting the timeline with SCP-319 every time he failed. His attempts included setting off a number of nuclear devices and destructive SCPs at the point of UBU's arrival (it survived), convincing SCP-2803-A to merge with SCP-169 and attack UBU (UBU killed it after an epic battle that lasted centuries), teleporting the entire continent into a pocket dimension the moment UBU appeared (it came back) and using SCP-YEZ to take control of the Church of the Broken God and build a powerful mecha to attack UBU. This time around, UBU revealed that it remembered Michaud and was the same UBU from the original timeline, having somehow survived Michaud repeatedly destroying the timeline and followed him through the resets. It then subdued and destroyed the mecha before Michaud detonated SCP-319 and escaped in SCP-001.
Michaud's sanity degenerated after the realization that even wiping out the entire timeline had failed to stop UBU and began various extreme methods such as using anomalies to crash Earth's moon into UBU, destroying the Earth, only to find that the debris was too dense to tell if UBU had survived. He also tried using SCP-YEZ and the hominid replicators to create a cult dedicated to the cause of making as many mechas to fight UBU as humanly possible, which fought several religious wars to enslave humanity to build more mechas. Not enough mechas could be built before UBU's arrival to make any difference. Michaud eventually began destroying the world using mechas and then resetting the timeline in prime-numbered cycles in order to vent his frustration.
By the time of the 678th cycle, Michaud had lost all his hominid replicators with only 305 extant replicants, and had insufficient resources to obtain SCP-319, meaning this would have to be his final cycle. By this time his existence wholly resolved around the goal of making UBU suffer, with his plan moving from destroying UBU to trapping it in a pocket dimension where he was God to be tortured by him for all eternity. Just in case his plan failed, he contacted the Foundation and declared that an XK-class end-of-the-world scenario was imminent. When Foundation researcher Aaron Gualtieri was sent to investigate, Michaud took him prisoner and tortured him with electricity to force him to arrange to get him access to SCP-319 and more hominid replicators so he could reset the timeline if he failed. However, when Gualtieri was told what had happened, he picked up on how UBU had blocked the Foundation from contacting the Three Moons Initiative and realized they must have been able to stop it somehow. He then committed suicide via a cyanide capsule, causing his soul to go to the Corbenic afterlife dimension where the Three Moons were based, where he explained the situation. Sure enough, the Three Moons realized that SCP-UBU was a pantagruel, a species native to Corbenic that could be killed using a very simple ritual. Two Three Moons agents of Earth prematurely summoned UBU and reduced it to a pile of salt with an incantation and a magical wooden stick before sending the Foundation instructions on how to kill pantagruel if another one appeared.
Unfortunately, Michaud's entire existence had revolved around the desire to make UBU suffer for its crimes. Now that this was taken away from him, he lost what little sanity he had left and was reduced to screaming in anguish inside SCP-001 in the hope that some higher entity would take pity on him and bring UBU back so he could torture it. The screaming briefly stopped at one point when he booted up a standard-issue computer game included with SCP-001, but was unable to enter the access code. His screaming has since resumed.
