Monsters are useful, but they ain't bright.
~ The Book of Monsters about Lava Monsters.

Lava Monsters are a hostile species featured in the Nexo Knights TV series, serving as the main antagonistic faction in the first two seasons of the show, and a minor heroic one in the third season. They are the servants of Monstrox who had been imprisoned inside the magic books for years before being freed by Jestro.

History[]

Past[]

It's unknown how Lava Monsters came to be, but they started off as minions of the arch necromancer Monstrox. After Monstrox was defeated and turned into the Book of Monsters by the wizard Merlok, his monsters were imprisoned either inside him or in other magic books that were kept in Merlok's library.

Release[]

About a hundred years later, Monstrox found a perfect pawn in form of the royal jester Jestro and encouraged him to release several monsters, including Burnzie and Sparkks. When the wizard Merlok sees this, he summons a powerful spell that temporarily destroys the monsters and scatters the books with them across the kingdom of Knighton.

Jestro and the Book of Monsters searched for these books and released even more monsters to fight Nexo Knights with: Beast Master, Whiparella, Lavaria and others. When all but one books had been gathered by the villains, the monsters assisted the Book of Monsters in his attempt to possess Jestro's, and later Clay's, body. When the book was struck by the Techcalibur and exploded, the monsters were thrown out of their headquaters by the shockwave and released a cloud of smoke, implying that they were gone for real.

A new home[]

It was later revealed, however, that Lava Monsters survived their final battle with Nexo Knights. As Monstrox was presumed dead, General Magmar took command of the army and led the monsters to the parts unknown. Eventually, the came across a land surrounded by a wall of fire, with a statue in the center. The monsters were unaware that the statue was a Rogul guarding the Forbidden Power of Blazing Burn, but decided to build their own town, Burningham, on this land. While constructing the town, they reflected on the times when they themselves used to raid and destroy towns in Knightonia and ultimately decided against it, instead turning over a new leaf and leading normal lives in their newly founded anarcho-syndicalist commune. Eventually, this would lead to a confrontation between them and Monstrox's Rock Monsters, making them ask Nexo Knights for help. With the knights' help, the monsters were able to fight off Monstrox's forces and even tricked him into taking the decoy "Rogul", who turned out to be Beast Master. After celebrating their victory, Lava Monsters started fighting each other to keep in touch with their old life.

It's unknown what happened to them afterwards, but it can be assumed that they still live in Burningham.

Behavior[]

According to Monstrox, Lava Monsters are not very bright, although some relatively intelligent individuals, like Magmar and Lavaria, do exist among them. Only a few of them were heard speaking, although it's possible that monsters like Globlins and Scurriers are capable of speech as well. They were shown organized enough to build an entire town and create their own society. Originally, they seemed to enjoy serving Monstrox and causing destruction across Knighton, and turned on Jestro, their second-in-command, due to Monstrox planning to possess him. However, after spending a lot of time building their own town, they understood how amoral their behavior was and chose to live in peace instead, even willingly allying with their former enemies to fight Monstrox.

Physiology[]

Lava Monsters come in different forms, including humanoid, although some of them, like Globlins, Scurriers and Ash Attackers, are more widespead than the others. Both male and female monsters exist, although it's unknown how (and if) they reproduce.

Some of them have exclusive abilities: for example, Whiparella is able to make her victim hallucinate their greatest fear by hitting them with her whips, while Flama shoots balls of fire from his hands. According to Magmar, they can make anything they touch burn, whether intentionally or by accident, although aside from a few incidents, like Lavaria slightly burning Jestro's shirt, this isn't evident.

They were shown to be incredibly resilient to normal weapons, yet turned into smoke and returned into the Book of Monsters if struck with a Nexo Power-enhanced weapon. Now that Monstrox has taken another form, it's unknown what happens to Lava Monsters in this case anymore.

Trivia[]

  • Since Lava Monsters didn't appear in Season 4, it's unknown if their town was affected by Monstrox's rampage and if they survived it.
