~ Angie to Leanne reflecting on their past wrongdoing. |
Leanne Lemmle Taylor and Angelina "Angie" Rice are recurring antagonists throughout seasons one to five of the 2012 series Orange is the New Black.
They were inmates at Litchfield Penitentiary working in the laundry room, before being transferred to FDC Cleveland after the riot in season five.
Leanne was portrayed by Emma Myles, and Angie was portrayed by Julie Lake.
Personalities[]
Leanne Taylor[]
Leanne is an addict with immature qualities. She is shown to be spiteful and revels in causing mischief around the prison. She demonstrates childlike tendencies, much like Angie. She does not demonstrate much critical thought and is easily swayed by radical ideas. She is a typical bully, relying on Angie's assistance (and at first Pennsatucky as well) to terrorise her fellow inmates.
Angie Rice[]
Angie is Leanne's second-in-command. Angie is also an addict who is often motivated by locating her next high. Like Leanne, she is also childlike and lacks critical thought. She enables Leanne's mischief and is the less intelligent of the two. She demonstrates some rare instances of independence from Leanne but these often do not end well.
Physical appearances[]
Leanne Taylor[]
Leanne has mousey blonde hair which she wears down. She has pale skin and blue eyes. Her teeth have decayed after her addiction to drugs.
Angie Rice[]
Angie has messy brown hair with a sharp chin. She has blue eyes. Like Leanne, her teeth are also decaying and yellowed following her substance abuse.
Biographies[]
Backgrounds[]
Leanne Taylor[]
Leanne was raised in an Amish community. During her Rumspringa, Leanne developed an addiction to drugs and started dealing. Leanne chose to return to her community, but keeps her drugs and stashes them in a hidden backpack. Leanne is then baptised by her community and welcomed back. During Leanne's baptism, the police find the backpack as well as Leanne's ID.
The police offer Leanne a deal where she can have immunity if she gives up the names of her friends who she sold her drugs to. Leanne does so and is not arrested. She overhears her parents speaking about her and their fear of being shunned within their community now they know Leanne was a drug user. Fearful of disappointing her parents, Leanne leaves her community.
It is unknown how she became incarcerated, but a popular theory suggests part of Leanne's deal was to stay under house arrest, thus by fleeing her family home violating it and warranting her arrest.
Angie Rice[]
Not much is known about Angie's life before the beginning of the series, other than that her mother is also possibly a drug addict. It is also known that she used to date a man called Clarence who was black, which her family disapproved of.
Orange is the New Black[]
Leanne and Angie are shown to be good friends of Pennsatucky whilst they work in the laundry room. The trio take pleasure in insulting others around them and taking drugs. Leanne and Angie seem to support Pennsatucky's evangelical delusions that she is a messenger of Jesus Christ. After Pennsatucky becomes boastful after her dental surgery from her fight with Piper Chapman, the pair abandon her.
Without a leader to follow, the pair are left without a purpose and join the hunger strike. However, it is clear they are disinterested in reforming the prison when their demands centre around a different maple syrup. Leanne and Angie's association with the strike is extremely short lived after they are tempted out of it by being offered pizza by the COs.
Once again without purpose, Leanne and Angie become part of the Wiccan cult which develops into a cult dedicated to Norma Romano. Leanne takes it too far and becomes obsessive over the group and tries to enforce everyone to treat it as their true religion, reflecting Pennsatucky's evangelicalism. Leanne and Angie contradict their spiritual beliefs after they start bullying inmate Brook Soso.
After the cult dissolves, Leanne and Angie join the newly formed white supremacist group in the prison. During the beginning of the riot, Leanne and Angie become bored and decide to have as much fun as they can throughout it by pranking various inmates. When the inmates decide on which demands should be included in their statement, they admit to Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson they voted for the inclusion of Hot Cheetos and Takis 27 times. After Taystee angrily tells them to leave, they pull down her trousers.
Whilst Pennsatucky makes beverages for everyone, Leanne and Angie restrain her whilst Leanne cruelly urinates in it. Leanne and Angie then come into possession of the gun brought into the prison by Thomas Humphrey, and use it to put on a talent show featuring all of the COs. Leanne uses the gun to force CO Stratman to give her a lap dance. Later, Leanne and Angie discover CO Charlie Coates. Pennsatucky, who is in a secret relationship with Coates, returns and tries to convince Leanne and Angie to let her have Coates. Leanne and Angie believe that Pennsatucky only wants to do this so that she can take the credit. Pennsatucky then grabs the gun from Angie and throws it to Coates, causing it to fire at Leanne and shoot the tip of her "favourite finger" off.
Leanne and Angie find the fingertip, but realise they will not be able to get it reattached. Instead, they abduct CO Stratman and demand a nurse sew it on to her finger. However, in an effort to cause a distraction, he flirts with her and begins digitally penetrating her. During the storm of the riot, Leanne and Angie burn the inmates files in an effort to make up for their transgressions, to try and be on the "good guys" team.
As the pair are escorted out, Leanne spies her mother, showing that despite her transgressions she "is good now." The pair are then transferred together to FDC Cleveland.
