Get that bitch, Leatherface! Get that bitch... dog will hunt.
~ Chop Top Sawyer commanding Leatherface.

Bubba Sawyer, now known as Kenneth "Kenny" Slaughter and better known as Leatherface, is the main antagonist of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

He is an unstable and cannibalistic serial killer who wears masks that are the faces of his victims, perfectly flayed from their bodies. Together with his mysterious and insane family, Leatherface would hunt down any intruder who steps into their territory and would use different kinds of tools to murder them, but he mostly uses his chainsaw. Due to having acromegaly, he is a large individual.

He was portrayed by the late Gunnar Hansen (first film), Bill Johnson (second film; close-ups), Bob Elmore (second film; long-shots), Tom Morga (second film; bridge scene), R. A. Mihailoff (third film), Kane Hodder (third film; stunts), Robert Jacks (fourth film), and Mark Burnham (fifth film).

Fame and Iconicity[]

He is one of the biggest horror icons but, unlike most of them, he is not supernatural in any way. His main weapons are a chainsaw, a sledgehammer and his own physical strength. He wears a mask made from a person's skin, which he uses to express a personality, and engages in murder and cannibalism alongside his family. Although it seemed that he kills only to survive and feed himself, it is also notable that director Tobe Hooper has stated that Leatherface kills out of fear, not malice, as he believes himself and his family to be in constant danger. Although he is the most recurring villain, he still takes orders from his older family members.

Mask[]

In the original film, Leatherface wore three different masks: the "Killing Mask", "Old Lady Mask" and "Pretty Woman Mask". Gunnar Hansen commented: "The reason he wore a mask, according to Tobe and Kim, was that the mask really determined his personality. Who he wanted to be that day determined what mask he put on. So, when Drayton comes home with Sally, Leatherface is wearing the 'Old Lady Mask' and he's wearing an apron and carrying a wooden spoon, he wants to be domestic, helpful in the kitchen.

At dinner he wears a different face, the 'Pretty Woman,' which has makeup." Also of note, the 'Pretty Woman' outfit consists of a female wig and a black suit, as Leatherface is "dressing up" for dinner, an old deep south tradition which stems from his southern upbringing, and the 'Killing Mask' is the skin mask he wears while chasing and murdering captives. Tobe Hooper also discussed the multiple masks and dinner scene on the audio commentary for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Hansen later added, "The idea of the mask is that there is no personality under the mask. That was the idea in talking with Tobe and Kim. When they created the character, they said he has to put on masks to express himself because he himself can't do it. The way we tried to create him, there is nothing under the mask, which is what makes him so frightening."

Biography[]

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre[]

Leatherface's cannibalistic family consists of his older brothers Nubbins Sawyer, Chop Top Sawyer, and his father Drayton Sawyer. He also has an unnamed grandfather, who is extremely old and frail.

When Sally, Franklin, Jerry, Pam, and Kirk reached their homestead, Kirk and Pam looked for the local swimming hole and stumbled upon the cannibals' house—hoping they could get some gasoline for their van—where Leatherface killed Kirk with a sledgehammer and hung Pam on a meat hook before throwing her into a freezer where she froze to death. When Jerry came looking for them, he was killed by Leatherface with a sledgehammer. He then killed Franklin in the woods with his chainsaw and chased Sally, where Drayton took her to his house to cook her and eat her. When Grandpa failed to kill Sally with the hammer, she ran, but Nubbins the hitchhiker and Leatherface chased after her. Nubbins were much faster then Leatherface and caught up to Sally. Before he could kill her, he was run over by an 18-wheeler and had been too focused on Sally to notice. With Nubbins dead, only Leatherface was left and managed to catch up to Sally. Sally went in the truck and with the driver and he attacked with his chainsaw. The two got out and ran and Leatherface chased after them. Seeing that they weren't losing him, the driver with a wrench, knocking him down and causing him to cut his leg on his chainsaw. Sally managed to take advantage of this distraction and escape on a passing pickup truck while the driver ran away in fear. He was last seen swinging his chainsaw around in frustration due to his victim escaping, his wounds and his brother Nubbins dead.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2[]

After fourteen years, Leatherface reemerged, killing two drunks named Buzz and Rick. Sally and Franklin's uncle Lefty Enright was searching for the cannibals to get his revenge. When he got Stretch to play the deaths on the radio, Leatherface and Chop Top went over to the station to kill her. However, Leatherface fell in love with her. He refused to kill her when Drayton and Chop Top found her, however he did not attempt to stop Grandpa from killing her because was forced to hold her in place. But Grandpa was too old and frail, so Drayton tried to kill her himself, but Lefty entered, armed with three chainsaws. After injuring Drayton, Lefty engaged Leatherface in a chainsaw duel, where Leatherface was impaled by Lefty with his chainsaw. He was still able to fight, but the fight was ended shortly after; Drayton, deranged and having lost a lot of blood, set off a grenade. Leatherface was last seen getting hit by Grandpa with a hammer (he was really aiming for Lefty), knocking him down, before all four of them were killed in the grenade explosion, which narrowly missed Chop Top as he climbed a ladder after Stretch and eventually falls to his death.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)[]

Main article: Leatherface (Netflix)

About fifty years after the original massacre from 1973, Leatherface is living a peaceful life with Mrs. MC in the now deserted town of Harlow, when a group of young entrepreneurs arrive and attempt to gentrify the town. Two members of the group, Melody and Dante, enter Harlow Orphanage. Melody tries to evict Mrs. MC out of the home, to which she refuses as she still legally was allowed to live there. Meanwhile, Dante removes the confederate flag which had belonged to MC's grandfather. Due to stress, Mrs. MC starts to throw up and collapses, Leatherface comes and helps her up. Some officers arrive and they bring her to a paramedic truck, with Leatherface coming as well.

On the way to the hospital, Leatherface holds Mrs. MC in his lap and is comforted by Mrs. MC, being told that he is her boy. She suffers from a heart attack to which Leatherface panics. He puts her oxygen mask over her mouth and tries to save her, but to no prevail. Out of rage and agony, Leatherface kills the officer in the back of the truck by snapping his hand and stabbing him with the bone that was sticking out. He causes the dying officer to shoot the driver, which leads to the truck crashing into a field. Leatherface exits the truck, skins Mrs. MC's face and wears it as a mask, then props her corpse into sitting up in the field. He finds Ruth, Dante's girlfriend, alive in the passenger seat and stabs her in the gut, caressing her face before walking back to Harlow.

Leatherface goes back to the orphanage and finds Dante walking around the home. He cuts him across the face and leaves him to bleed out on the floor. Melody was there while this was happening and hid under Mrs. MC's bed. After this, Leatherface goes to Mrs. MC's bedroom and breaks the wall open to retrieve his chainsaw he used from 1973. Before he is able to start it, however, a mechanic named Richter enters the house while armed after having seen Dante walk out covered in blood. Leatherface attacks him and swings his hammer at Richter's leg, destroying it by bending it backwards. He then stabs him in the head with a shard of broken glass on the window, causing him to fall to the ground and see Melody hiding under the bed. Leatherface grabs his sledgehammer and repeatedly bashes Richter in the head to the point of shattering his skull and tendering his flesh, all while Melody was hiding under the bed, having witnessed the brutal murder.

Leatherface leaves the room but hears Melody sneaking around the house. He finds her at the bottom of the staircase and throws his sledgehammer at her, causing her to fall and break through the floor. She tries to crawl away, but Leatherface listens to her and saws through the floor. She gets to a vent cover but gets covered in feces when the sewage pipe is sawed through. Melody's sister, Lila, finds her and gets her out, and the two run to a party bus. Leatherface follows them to the bus and kills the bus driver. He then enters the party room to which he is met with a group of young influencers, who begin to record him. Leatherface revs his chainsaw and begins to brutally murder every last one of the influencers. While he is going on his killing spree, Melody and Lila go into the restroom of the bus and escape through the ceiling window. Leatherface saws through the door but gets stabbed in the arm with a corkscrew.

As Leatherface is leaving the bus, Melody and Lila find a cop car and enter it, finding an elderly woman who turns out to actually be Sally Hardesty, the sole survivor to the original massacre from 1973. She tells the two girls to stay in the car while she confronts Leatherface, who is sitting in the orphanage alone. Leatherface is held at gunpoint and is asked by Sally if he remembers her, to which he doesn't. He walks out and finds the sisters hiding in the car. He grabs Melody but gets shot in the shot in the shoulder by Sally. The two start to fight, ending with Leatherface impaling Sally with the chainsaw and tossing her onto some garbage bags.

Leatherface finds Melody and Lila in a garage, having crashed the cop car into it. He is about to kill Melody but is stopped by Lila when she aims a gun at him, but when it was found to be empty, he started chasing her. Lila falls to the ground and before he gets to saw her, Sally shoots Leatherface again. He stumbles away into an abandoned theater, while Sally bleeds out to death. Lila enters the theater, armed with Sally's shotgun, but is attacked by Leatherface. The two have a scuffle, and when Leatherface is about to kill Lila, Melody returns and hits him in the chin with his own chainsaw, making him fall into a large body of water.

Several hours later, Leatherface reemerges and finds the sisters leaving Harlow in their car. He breaks the window and grabs Melody, decapitates her and holds her head up for Lila to see as the car drives away. Leatherface, while still holding Melody's severed head, swings his chainsaw around.

After slaughtering Melody and the rest of the visitors, Leatherface returns to the original Sawyer farmhouse.

Mortal Kombat X[]

Leatherface had cut down the old man in the strange outfit. Maybe now that he was dead, the pretty yellow haired chewing girl would notice Leatherface. Putting on his fanciest mask, Leatherface found the army camp where the pretty girl could be found most days. He had to cut through a few guards and more than a few of her friends to get to her, but it was worth it. He pulled out the old man's face, which he'd saved for the girl as a present. The girl didn't want the present. And she wasn't being nice. So Leatherface chopped her into tiny pieces for Drayton to use in his chili. He then took off his mask and set to work on the girl's face. If she wasn't going to be his girlfriend, she could be his in other ways.
~ Leatherface's ending in Mortal Kombat X.

Leatherface is featured as a guest character in the 2015 fighting game Mortal Kombat X alongside Jason Voorhees, Alien and Predator. He is available in three different variations; a 'Killer' outfit based off his standard appearance in the original 1974 film, a 'Pretty Lady' outfit based off his appearance at the end of the original film and a 'Butcher' outfit which is similar to his appearance in the 2003 remake. Each variation comes with different abilities and fighting styles. He is able to use both his chainsaw and his hammer as weapons.

Dead by Daylight[]

Leatherface is featured as a playable character in the game Dead by Daylight alongside Michael Myers, Amanda Young, Freddy Krueger and among others. He is based on the original character from the 1974 film. He was brought into the realm of the entity as one of it's servants immediately after the events of the first film.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre video games[]

Leatherface appears as the player character in the 1983 video game for the Atari 2600, and as a playable character for the 2023 multiplayer game. Both games are based on the original 1974 film.

List[]

  • Leatherface appeared in the Robot Chicken episode That Hurts Me where he is on the Big Brother show with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Ghostface, and Pinhead. He wins the challenge when he retrieves a kitten from a block of ice. He also plays charades with Jason and Michael (none of the three can talk).
  • Leatherface also appeared in the fan video The Nightmare Ends on Halloween, sent by Pinhead to kill Freddy. His back is hunched.
  • A spoof of him appeared in the spoof movie Stan Helsing. Going by the name Pleatherface. He also talks at one point. His chainsaw is plugged in; thus, he is defeated when his chainsaw is unplugged, and runs off.
  • He, along with Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, appeared as the co-icons of Halloween Horror Nights: Carnival of Carnage at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood during 2007. All three of the mentioned characters were minions of Jack the Clown.
  • Ilgishin, a villain from GARO: Makai no Hana, is depicted to be "part Leatherface" due to its host, Harima, has passion on horror films. The proof of this was in his true form, Ilgishin has Leatherface's chainsaw on his left hand, though it was attached in the same way Ash Williams from Evil Dead series would attach his own signature chainsaw.
  • An American producer & DJ known as Figure, created a drumstep-track named Leather Face, decided to him. The track also is apart of his album named Monsters of Drumstep Volume. 2

Personality[]

Leatherface is a mentally challenged serial killer. He is not very methodical with his murders, rather going through with them loudly and messy. Each movie has its own unique take on the character, some being similar to one another.

In the first film, Leatherface shows emotions of fear upon seeing the intruders in his home, as he screams. He is very ruthless with his kills, treating his victims like mere meat. However, when he is at home, he shows submission to his family. Leatherface's older brother, The Cook abuses him and beats him with a broomstick, whom he doesn't fight off, instead he cowers and takes the beating. It is also of importance that he is non-verbal, he relies on his human masks to express himself.

In the second film, Leatherface is mainly the same as he was in the previous film, with the exception of some benevolence, however. Leatherface is seen forming a crush on Vanita Brock, sparing her life and hiding her away from the rest of his family upon finding her in the Sawyer hideout.

In the third film, Leatherface is much more aggressive and crueler due to mental maturity, now with the mind of a rebellious teenager. He shows love for his mother, Anne Sawyer, and his unnamed daughter. It is also implied that this films portrayal of Leatherface is a rapist.
