Sheriff Lee Bodecker is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Preston Teagardin) of the 2011 Gothic novel The Devil All the Time and its 2020 film adaptation of the same name.

He was portrayed by Sebastian Stan, who portrays the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chase Collins in The Covenant, Blaine in Hot Tub Time Machine, Justin Lafferty in Law & Order, Nick Fowler in The 355, and Brendan in Fresh.

Biography[]

Lee is the corrupt sheriff of Knockemstiff, as well as the brother of Sandy and brother-in-law of Carl Henderson, who later became serial killers. Then-Officer Lee Bodecker is introduced in 1957, receiving a handjob from a prostitute in his car. He is sent to handle the suicide of Willard Russell and speaks to his son Arvin Russell about Lee's father abandoning him.

Lee reappears in 1965, confronting his younger sister, Sandy Russell, on her prostitution and how it's making him look bad for reelection. He then discovers that Sandy had been murdering men, but keeps quiet on it. Lee then murders two of his criminal associates.

Lee then appears when Sandy and her husband Carl are killed by Arvin Russell. Lee, intent on killing Arvin to save his reputation, proceeds to the woods with a shotgun to kill him.

Arvin pleads with Lee to stand down, but shoots him in self-defense. Before Lee dies, Arvin showed him a picture of his sister with one of Carl’s victims that he no choice when they tried to kill him before the sheriff succumbed to his wounds. After Arvin left, he left evidence of Lee’s corruption, thus ruining and tarnishing Lee’s reputation for good.

Trivia[]

  • Chris Evans was originally cast to play Lee Bodecker before dropping out due to scheduling conflicts. Ironically, Evans and Stan worked together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, in which Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man, also stars in.
  • Lee’s role in the first half is more debuted initially as a anti-hero, but later on he is depicted as one of the main antagonists, due to his corruptive tendencies for letting his sister and brother in law to kill men after discovering their intentions and killing his associates. He is also very selfish, by attempting to kill Arvin Russell not only to avenge Sandy and Carl, but to save his reputation.
