Lee Byeong-chan is one of the overarching antagonists of the Korean Netflix series and webtoon All of Us Are Dead.
He is a science teacher at Hyosun High and the creator of the Jonas Virus that kickstarted the zombie outbreak in the series.
He was portrayed by Kim Byung-chul.
Personality[]
Despite being the brains behind the entire zombie apocalypse, Byeong-chan is not without redeeming qualities. He deeply cared about his family and wanted what's best for his son. He became more cynical after his son got continuously bullied and the authorities failed to punish the bullies, leading him to think that the strong individuals will inevitably prey on the weaker. So his solution is to make a drug that will make his son stronger. Even after the zombie outbreak starts because of him, he still believes that the bullying started because of the violence in human nature.
Byeong-chan eventually realizes the error of his ways and gives the only surviving police detective at the station the location of his laptop, which holds all of his research and the key to stopping the virus after sacrificing himself to save him.
Once becoming a zombie, it is implied he still retains his intelligence given the way he walks and looks around.
Biography[]
Pre-Outbreak[]
Lee Byeong-chan graduated with a in degree cellular biology and used to be a researcher for a pharmaceutical corporation before taking a job as a biology teacher in a high school. After seeing that his son was getting bullied daily and dissatisfied with the improper response by the school and authorities toward the bullying, he created the Jonas Virus to remove fear from humans so his son could strike back at the bullies. However, his son is transformed into a zombie instead. When he visits his son at the hospital, he became a zombie again, and knocked him with a Bible, and kept his son in a bag and tied him up at home. But his son was still alive, and also his wife got infected. Now both his son and wife are tied as zombies. Later on, Hyeon-ju, one of his son's bullies, was bitten by his lab mouse and got infected. Byeong-chan ties her and injects her with a substance that slows down the infection. Unfortunately, Hyeon-ju breaks free, biting the school nurse and a doctor at the hospital, leading to the outbreak in the school causing many students and the staff to become zombies and starting the outbreak in Hyosan.
Post-Outbreak[]
At some point, while studying to find the cure, he was arrested by Jae-ik and was interrogated at the police station. However, when zombies overrun the police station, they tried to search for the laptop that had information and escaped, however, Byeong-chan met his demise by saving Jae-ik and became zombified. However, he seems to become a hybrid or hambie instead of normal zombie. It is unknown yet if he either actually died from the bombings on Episode 11 or he is still alive as a hybrid in hiding.
