“ | Let’s get one thing straight right off – this is not a goddamn confession, alright? If you go to the police with this, I will deny every word, and I know enough about the law to know that even if I spill my guts to you about all the horrible things I’ve done, it will count for nothing in court. | „ |
~ Lee Rentoul starting his statement to the Magnus Institute. |
Lee Rentoul is a minor character in the Rusty Quill horror podcast The Magnus Archives, serving as the protagonist of Mag 14: Piecemeal. He was a ruthless criminal living in London and the partner of Paul Noriega. When Noriega got him sent prison for five years, Rentoul set out to have revenge on him. With the help of a mysterious woman named Angela, he got his revenge on his old associate, inadvertently getting himself cursed in the process.
Appearance[]
Lee Rentoul is never described in detail. However, it can be inferred that he is an intimidating and muscled white man.
Personality[]
Lee Rentoul was a self-centered and contemptuous individual. He showed a strong sense of dislike towards almost everyone he met, characterizing almost every as pathetic, stupid, or slimy. His only priorities were his own needs, and he showed very little empathy towards others, showing no remorse for any of his actions. That being said, he seemed aware of the type of person he was and how his actions could be perceived; he simply didn't care as long as there were no actual consequences.
Lee was prone to violent outbursts, and enjoyed inflicting physical retribution upon those who he felt had wronged him. In general, he was very temperamental and took offense easily. He also seemed somewhat sadistic, taking pleasure in violence. That being said, he was not stupid or impulsive, and only committed crimes he felt he could get away with.
Biography[]
Lee Rentoul seemed somewhat prominent in the crime underbelly of London, working with his associate Paul Noriega for eight years. One day, Noriega assaulted a young man named Toby McMullen, permanently disfiguring him. Lee and Noriega were arrested shortly thereafter, and Noriega blamed the assault on Lee. This allowed Noriega to leave scot-free but led to Lee being sentenced to five years in prison.
Lee spent his time in prison plotting his revenge against Noriega, and when he was let out, tried to track him down. However, this proved difficult as Noriega went out of his way to avoid him and was significantly richer than he had been when the two had been partners. Lee eventually tracked him down and attacked in Lewisham but was repelled by his bodyguards.
Lee eventually went to get help from Toby McMullen, who also wanted revenge on Noriega. Toby told him about an alleged witch named Angela who could apparently make people disappear, but claimed he needed help enlisting her services. Lee reluctantly agreed and they went to meet with her. Angela told them that she required not payment, and that she could kill Noriega if she just had something stolen from him. Lee a lighter that had once belonged to Noriega and gave that to her.
Three weeks later, Noriega still wasn't dead, and Lee gave up on Angela, once again deciding to take things into his own hands. He discovered that Noriega was meeting with a black-market dealer named Mikaele Salesa and snuck into the meeting. When Noriega was finally alone, he snuck up on him and murdered him. While disposing of the body, he noted that Noriega was missing an eye, several fingers, and some teeth; parts of his body he had not been missing before.
Five days afterwards, he received a black package that said with the words "For Immediate Consideration" on it, containing a finger. Later that day, he accidentally cut off his finger, but the scar immediately healed. He later got another box containing two toes and later had two of his toes crushed by a television. Over the next two weeks, similar events happened, causing him to lose 4 fingers, most of his toes, an eye, several teeth and a hand.
Knowing that this was somehow the work of Angela, he confronted her and tried to attack, which somehow resulted in him eating off his own hand. He turned to the Magnus Institute, an organization that studied the supernatural, who asked him to give his statement. After giving his statement, he became violent with some of the Institute's employees and ended up in the hospital having lost his tongue. After this incident he disappeared, although his landlord found his apartment contained hundreds of carboard boxes, implying Lee had been split into more and more pieces until there was nothing left.
Quotes[]
“ | At this point I was starting to feel uneasy. Not scared, alright, I wasn’t scared of this old woman, but being around her was… bad. I don’t know how else to say it, she was bad. You’ve got to understand, I know dangerous, I understand dangerous, hell, I am dangerous. This was something else. But I wanted Paul Noriega dead so badly. | „ |

“ | It was almost an hour later that Salesa and his men left, still carrying that box. They didn’t look happy, but I could have given a damn. As soon as they were round the corner I headed inside, as quietly as I could, and there he was, leaning up against a pile of bricks, smoking. I started to move towards him, but as I got near he must have heard me, and turned around. He started to say something about reconsidering, and lowering the price, when he realised I was not Salesa. Then a look passed over the face of Paul Noriega that I will treasure forever. No matter what happens to me, the memory of that look of panicked terror will stay with me. | „ |

“ | I don’t have much time. I got a box this morning, a few hours before I came here. It was a tongue. | „ |

Trivia[]
- According to a Q&A, Lee's statement was originally going to contain far more swearing, but producer Alexander J. Newall requested that it be removed in order to avoid an explicit rating on iTunes.
- The show's write, Jonathen Sims found it very funny that it was the swearing and not the body horror that would lead to an explicit tag.
