The Legionnaire Mercenaries are the main antagonists of the video game Battlefield: Bad Company. They are an elite group of mercenaries led by their eponymous leader, widely considered to be the deadliest army in the world.
Biography[]
Some time before the war between the United States and the Russian Federation, the group that would become known as the Legionnaire Mercenaries were a French Foreign Legion platoon on a patrol in Africa, where the platoon had found a stache of Nazi gold. The man who would become the Legionnaire conspired with those loyal to him, and they killed their commanding officer, along with those loyal to him. The remaining soldiers took the gold, went rogue, and became mercenaries, becoming somewhat of a myth known only by the "spooks" in the intelligence community, while simultaneously becoming known as the deadliest army in the globe, in which their soldiers were always in paid in gold bars.

~ Terrence Sweetwater responding to George Haggard's skepticism |
At some point, the Russian Federation and the Middle Eastern Coalition hired the Legionnaire Mercenaries in their war against the United States, where they would have their first encounter with Bravo One Charlie, a four-man squad in the United States Army, during the latter's very first mission. The squad had briefly mistaken them for Russians, opening fire under the orders of their mission commander to clear the area of any remaining hostiles. Immediately after, however, two of the American soldiers, Terrence Sweetwater and George Haggard, had begun suspecting that these were not Russian soldiers that they had killed, with the later discovery of their insignia on one of the mercenaries' bodies confirming their suspicions. Bravo One Charlie would also discover one of the Mercenaries' mythical gold bars in a nearby house, setting the squad on a journey that would have them at odds with the infamous army.
The Mercenaries were later encountered after the American assault on the Russian city of Zabograd. Bravo One Charlie had found some soldiers down by a couple trucks in a nearby harbor. While there was a brief argument between the squad on what to do, they ultimately chose to assault the harbor and see if the Mercenaries there happened to have any gold. The trucks pulled away after the fight, with the squad checking each dead mercenary for any gold bars. They initially didn't find anyway, but as Preston Marlowe asked where the trucks were headed so quickly, a gold bar fell out of the last one, with Bravo One Charlie choosing to follow the trucks in order to try and capture the gold.
The squad followed the trucks up to the Russia-Serdaristan border, but just as they were about to turn back, Haggard singlehandedly invaded the neutral nation of Serdaristan in order to chase after the trucks. After they caught up to him, Bravo One Charlie chose to go AWOL, destroying nearby communications outposts in the area in order to cover up their tracks, before finding the Mercenaries' gold in a nearby harbor, where it was being placed within the Legionnaire's personal cargo ship. The squad cleared the harbor, but just as they were about to board it, the United States Army arrived to place them into custody for what they have done.
An AWOL Bravo One Charlie was later made to undertake a secret mission by the Army to capture Serdaristan's President, Zavimir Serdar, as they wanted to know if the country was truly neutral in the war between America and Russia. The squad's misadventures in the country would later take them to Serdar's presidential palace, where they would once again come across the Legionnaire Mercenaries, seemingly guarding the palace. After fighting their way to Serdar's safe room, the latter would say that he had "no other recourse than exile" and claiming that it was a mistake to hire the Legionnaires, claiming that he was being held captive because he could not afford to pay for the Legionnaire's services, and that he had taken Serdaristan as payment.
Later, the Legionnaire himself would find Bravo One Charlie and Serdar in the latter's gold-plated Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter while flying his own Ka-52 helicopter, shooting the former down and having his mercenaries capture Serdar and three-quarters of Bravo One Charlie. Marlowe, having avoided capture, later found footage of the Legionnaire threatening to execute Serdar for failing to pay him. Marlowe later rescued his squad, and they would go on to rescue Serdar from being executed by the Mercenaries, taking him into exile in an island in the middle of the Caspian Sea, as Bravo One Charlie chased after the Mercenaries.
During a battle between the United States and the Middle Eastern Coalition in the unfinished resort city of Sadiz, Bravo One Charlie would fight their way in an attempt to reach the gold, fighting through Middle Eastern soldiers, as well as temporarily stalling United States forces, before clashing with the Legionnaire Mercenaries in the unfinished city. They eventually found the gold, confirming the rumors long circulated in the intelligence community. A fight ensued in a nearby pier between the Mercenaries and Bravo One Charlie, with the latter ultimately emerging victorious after Marlowe shot down the Legionnaire's helicopter with a rocket launcher, and the squad driving away with the gold.

Trivia[]
- Discounting the Legionnaire's North American accent, all members of the Legionnaire Mercenaries appear to have Scottish, German, Russian, and French accents, though all of them speak in English.
