Biography[]
Background[]
| “ | Dutch van der Linde:I told you we was moving up in this world. Deputies. Arthur Morgan: You have finally lost your mind. Dutch: Amongst these drunkards, hillbillies and slavers... good honest thieves like us... we're bound to be moralizers in a place like this. |

| ~ Dutch to Arthur, regarding Leigh's lack of intelligence and the opportunities in the town. |
A member of the wealthy Gray family, Leigh shares his family's hatred and grudge towards the Braithwaite family, with whom they have a feud for so long that not even locals in the region can remember since exactly when. The brother of Tavish Gray, who leads the family, he became the sheriff of Rhodes before 1898, although he is higly incompetent at the job and prefers to make or steal moonshine from thugs working with the Braithwaites to drink it.
Events of Red Dead Online[]
The online protagonist can encounter Gray and his deputy Archibald MacGregor while looking at a wanted poster outside of Rhodes' Sheriff Office. After a short mission, Gray can sell the protagonist a bounty hunter license, unlocking the Bounty Hunter Role. The player will be able to capture various bounty targets in exchange for the price on their head.
Events of Red Dead Redemption II[]
During the summer of 1899, Leigh and MacGregor are transporting criminals to jail on a wagon : the Anderson boys and Josiah Trelawny, one of the Van der Linde gang's associates. Arthur Morgan, Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews, who were originally going to fishing, notice Trelawny and decide to distract the sheriff so that the prisoners could break free. Once the Andersons have fled, Arthur helps MacGregor to chase them on a train and they manage to capture the thugs. Dutch and Leigh are waiting for them at Rhodes' Sheriff Office, where the first convinces the latter to release Trelawny.
Dutch later lies to a drunk Leigh about who they are and what happened to them (they "lost their job"), leading to Leigh employing Van der Linde, Morgan and Bill Williamson as temporary deputies. He sends them to take down a Braithwaite-affiliated moonshine operation with MacGregor. The mission is a success, and the gang keeps the moonshine which they hope to sell back to the Braithwaites. Catherine Braithwaite, however, accepts to pay them for having "retrieved" the moonshine and asks Arthur and Hosea to sell it at the Rhodes Parlour House, owned by the Grays. The operation is a success until the Lemoyne Raiders, who were the original clients for the moonshine, confront the couple, who is forced to fight them off and flee.
Catherine later meets with Hosea and enlists Arthur and Sean MacGuire to burn the Gray's tobacco fields on their manor's property at Caliga Hall, while Tavish enlists Arthur, John Marston and Javier Escuella to steal Catherine's prized horses at Braithwaite Manor, the order of completion being left to the player. This exposes the gang to both families, not to mention Tavish lied about the price on the horses, leaving the gang furious.
Both families eventually discover that they were fooled by the gang and prepare for revenge. The Grays set a trap for Arthur, Sean, Bill and Micah Bell with a "security contract offer" in Rhodes to shoot them down while the Braithwaites kidnaps the four years old son of John and Abigail, Jack, outside of the gang's camp at Clemens Point to take him to Italian mobster Angelo Bronte in Saint Denis, hoping for a ransom. The Grays manage to kill Sean but are massacred by the trio. Leigh, MacGregor and the remaining goons end up taking Bill captive and Leigh puts a gun to Bill's head, saying he'll shoot him and then come for the rest of the gang including the women and children if Arthur and Micah don't surrender. The two of them easily outgun Leigh who is killed alongside his remaining deputies. The Braithwaites are not spared, however, as the gang in turn raid their mansion and set it on fire, with Catherine dying in an act of self-immolation. The reign of both families over Rhodes has ended.
Legacy[]
The remains of the Grays and the Braithwaites lose control over Rhodes, with Leigh being replaced as sheriff by Harmon Thomas, who is willing to clean up the corruption and the families' influence they had over the town, leaving them with no lasting legacy. Tavish will also later die from a heart attack.
