“ | This great lout with the brown teeth is Lem, short for Lemoncloak. It's yellow, you see, and Lem's a sour sort. | „ |
~ Tom of Sevenstreams introducing Lem Lemoncloak to Arya Stark. |
“ | Lem: If you got crimes to confess to your gods, this would be the time to say them. Brienne: Podrick has never harmed you. My father will ransom him. Tarth is called the sapphire isle. Send Podrick with my bones to Evenfall, and you'll have sapphires, silver, whatever you want. Lem: I want my wife and daughter back. Can your father give me that? If not, he can get buggered. The boy will rot beside you. Wolves will gnaw your bones. Jack-Be-Lucky: Do you mean to hang her, Lem? Or do you figure to talk the bitch to death? Lem: Let's see if she can dance. |

Lem, better known as Lem Lemoncloak (real name unknown) is a supporting antagonist in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and a minor antagonist in its TV adaption Game of Thrones. He is a member of the outlaw band known as the Brotherhood without Banners. Originally under the leadership of Lord Beric Dondarrion, following the latter's death, he now serves under the monstrous Lady Stoneheart, who is actually a resurrected Catelyn Stark, as one of her most loyal followers.
He was portrayed by Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson.
Appearance[]
Lem Lemoncloak is a big and brawny man with a bushy beard and bad teeth. He also has a deep, but harsh, voice.
Personality[]
Prior to joining the Brotherhood without Banners, Lem greatly loves and cares for his family, however, falling their deaths (perhaps at the hands of House Lannister, or another tragedy), he became a blunt, unfriendly and gruff man, as well as one of the least honorable and more thuggish members of the Brotherhood. He often displays cruel tendencies and has no respect towards others even Gendry and Arya Stark.
After Lady Stonheart assumes leadership, Lem became immensely loyal towards her, and is even willing to assist her in her ruthless vendetta against the Lannisters, House Bolton and House Frey, the instigators of the infamous Red Wedding. During that time, he became a much crueler and far more ruthless brute towards his victims, which made him turn a complete blind eye to the crimes he and the Brotherhood were committing, such as violating Guest Right, since it no longer matters to them, as a result of the Red Wedding.
Lem also proved to be a hypocrite as Thoros of Myr tried to dissuade him from taking the Hound's helm, only for the former to insist that he is not one of the bad men like the Hound and Rorge, making him completely ignorant of the fact that he himself is a brutal and cruel man who committed vile crimes like the latter two.
In Game of Thrones, Lem is rogue, psychotic, dishonorable, and even cowardly, as his actions is what tarnished the reputation of the Brotherhood without Banners as well as their name.
Quotes[]
“ | The Hound: Rocks and trees and rivers, that's what your realm is made of. Do the rocks need defending? Robert wouldn't have thought so. If he couldn't fuck it, fight it, or drink it, it bored him, and so would you... you brave companions. [loud sounds of outrage among the outlaws in the cave] Lem: Call us that name again, dog, and you'll swallow that tongue. [draws longsword] The Hound: Here's a brave man, baring steel on a bound captive. Untie me, why don't you? We'll see how brave you are then. |

~ Lem and Sandor Clegane |
“ | You must be a lackwit, boy. We're outlaws. Lowborn scum, most of us, excepting his lordship. Don't think it'll be like Tom's fool songs neither. You won't be stealing no kisses from a princess, nor riding in a tourney in stolen armor. You join us, you'll end with your neck in a noose, or your head mounted up above some castle gate. | „ |
~ Lem to Gendry |
“ | She don't speak. You bloody bastards cut her throat too deep for that. But she remembers. | „ |
~ Lem to Merrett Frey |
“ | Thoros: There is nothing good about that helm, nor the men who wore it. Sandor Clegane was a man in torment, and Rorge a beast in human skin. Lem: I'm not them. Thoros: Then why show the world their face? Savage, snarling, twisted ... is that who you would be, Lem? Lem: The sight of it will make my foes afraid. Thoros: The sight of it makes me afraid. Lem: Close your eyes, then. |
