Don’t call me Leonard! Only my mother calls me that! The name’s Buzzsaw!
~ Buzzsaw to anyone who calls him his real name rather than his nickname.

Leonard Burne, better known as Buzzsaw, is the main antagonist of Dragons: The Nine Realms.

He is a lumberjack that owns a company passed down by his grandfather in which he notices the Night Light Thunder and vows to capture and make him pay for burning down the Burne Lumber Company, which was actually burned down by Buzzsaw himself. He currently serves as a dragon helper as well as Old Jack's master and best friend.

He is voiced by Haley Joel Osment, who also voiced Vanitas in Kingdom Hearts, Kash D. Langford in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, and portrayed Mesmer in The Boys.

Personality[]

Greetings, citizens of Rakke Town! Please Looking out at your shocked faces, I see my presence comes as a surprise.
(Olivia gasps)
Guess your kids don't tell you everything. You have now tasted your first morsel of revenge from Buzzsaw, the King of Dragons!
(Old Jack growls)
Let this serve as a warning: You are no longer welcome in my domain! The dragon world, and all the dragons in it, belong to me and me alone! Trespassers will be shown no mercy!
(laughing while flying away on Old Jack)
~ Buzzsaw as he introduces himself to all of the Rakke Town residents.

Buzzsaw is incredibly volatile and psychologically unstable, as everyone who comes into contact with him notices. While it is uncertain which ailment he has, it is clear that he has some type of mental illness. He is extremely unpredictable and quickly angered, erupting into a frenzy at the least error or offense. While running his family's business, he was seen to be verbally abusive to his staff and refused to accept any justification they could have made when things went wrong. He also chastised them for things that were not their fault, including when their chainsaws ran out of gas, and was extremely irritated by their escape from the region during the forest fire, despite the obvious danger they were in. For unclear reasons, Buzzsaw despises being addressed as Leonard and will grow enraged if anybody other than his mother does so.

Buzzsaw is exceedingly illogical, myopic, ignorant, and arrogant as a result of his mental instability. Even in life-threatening situations, he exhibits a complete lack of common sense. This was demonstrated when he utilized an unsafe outside outlet to power his chainsaws, resulting in a fire that destroyed his company's logging site. His irrationality is so extreme that he attempted to drive into the flames in order to rescue the lodge, assuming that he could just put out the entire fire himself, despite the fact that he could not and that the lodge was beyond saving. Despite this, Buzzsaw is not wholly ignorant, since he has demonstrated skill in catching dragons in the Hidden World and even outwitted Tom during their second confrontation. Buzzsaw also appears to lack accountability and is unable to identify fault in his own acts, indicating a narcissistic mentality. This is seen when, when a fire broke out at his logging site, he immediately assumed it was the fault of someone else, never even considering that his risky logging procedures may have been to blame. Not only that, but after losing his family's company, he swore vengeance on Thunder after spotting him in the sky, strongly believing that the "lightning bird" was to blame for the fire, despite having no evidence.

Buzzsaw's already damaged mental state deteriorates further after losing the logging site and spending weeks in total isolation within the forests surrounding the Fissure following the incident, with him experiencing near-constant mood swings, ranging from seemingly friendly and polite to disturbingly angry and potentially violent at any moment. He is now obsessed with vengeance against the "lightning bird" for allegedly ruining his business (despite the fact that he was completely responsible), and will stop at nothing until he slays it. His developing insanity and illogical hatred of Thunder has also left him very paranoid of everyone he encounters, suspecting everyone he meets of knowing about the "lightning bird" or attempting to ruin his efforts to catch it. He is especially distrustful of the ICARIS station, believing that the "lightning bird" is a genetically-engineered creature of the Rakke Corp, despite the fact that he has no evidence to back up his claims.

Buzzsaw, in addition to his lunacy, has shown himself to be a nasty, deadly sociopath with little to no empathy for anybody other than himself. He is completely willing to kill anyone who stands in the way of his intentions to get revenge on Thunder. This includes youngsters, specifically the Dragon Club riders, whom he has repeatedly attempted to assassinate without remorse. In addition to his lack of empathy, he has an arrogant and contemptuous attitude toward nature, perceiving it as nothing more than a source of resources for humans, including himself, to exploit and profit from. This notion permeates his perceptions of the dragons in the Hidden World in particular. Buzzsaw, like the Dragon Hunters and Northern Alliance of the Viking age, consider dragons as nothing more than living resources that should only be utilized for personal gain, particularly as sources of food and riches, in contrast to the Dragon Club who perceive and appreciate the beauty of dragons.

However, based on his conversation with Eugene in "Magma Comes to the Surface," it is conceivable that a significant portion of Buzzsaw's mental instability results from feeling under a lot of pressure to uphold his family's reputation and to win his stern mother's approval. He is shown idolizing his grandfather Sterling Burne and fervently wants to preserve his history and safeguard his company. He also deeply cherishes and respects his mother, who is the only person he allows to use his real name. His psychopathy seems to grow as he decided to take over the Hidden World for himself, and burn half of Rakke Town.

Based on his talk with Eugene in "Magma Comes to the Surface", however, it's possible that that a large part of Buzzsaw's mental instability is derived from feeling a large amount of pressure to live up to his family name and his desire to earn his strict mother's approval. He is shown to idolize his grandfather, Sterling Burne, and wishes desperately to uphold his legacy and protect his business. He also loves and deeply respects his mother, as she is the only one he permits in calling him by his true name.

He is also, despite all appearances, fully capable of rational thought, as demonstrated by the fact that he doesn't try to fight in a battle he doesn't think he can win. For example, he didn't even try to fight the Sky Torcher, instead opting to fly away on Old Jack because he recognized that he and Old Jack could never defeat him and would both be killed by the giant dragon - though this may simply have been an act of cowardice. It was the same after the Jörmungandr seemingly killed his Sky Torcher.

Initially, Buzzsaw came off as a dangerous, but incompetent enemy. Although he posed a threat to the Dragon Club from the very moment he met them, he was repeatedly outsmarted and defeated, often in hilarious ways. This changes as the series progresses and he gradually becomes a bigger threat, especially after he stole the Book of Dragons, attacked Rakke Town and decided to take over the Hidden World. However, despite his villainy, Buzzsaw was able to bond with Old Jack and eventually realized the error of his ways and redeemed himself. And after the Dragon Riders saved his dragon's life, he came to fully respect them for who they were and what they do to help those in need.

Appearance[]

Buzzsaw is a young man in his late teens with dark brown eyes, backcombed hair, and dark brown eyes. He was wearing a dark green sweatshirt, blue trousers, and black hiking boots underneath a black button-up jacket.

By season 3, Buzzsaw also occasionally wore a brown logging/hiking belt, a black face mask, and a respirator mask that covered his lips and nose. He also occasionally wore a black ski cap.

In Season 5, he still has his normal attire (except his hat), but his hair is slightly longer, and his facial hairs have started growing. After expanding into the Nature Realm, he tears off the sleeves of his black jacket and begins wearing black work gloves and brown, belt-like straps wrapped around his gloves and boots. His blue jeans are also torn slightly.

In Season 7, he now wears a brown chestplate over his sweater and has green scales on his sleeves.

Biography[]

I knew it!
~ Buzzsaw after discovering the Ice Realm.

Buzzsaw has his villainy started when he saw Tom's dragon, Thunder flying and Buzzsaw nicknamed Thunder the Lightning Bird and he wanted to kill him.

In the Ice Realm, Buzzsaw sets traps against dragons. He trapped Thunder and prepares to attack him, but the Dragon Club Members freed him. They met Buzzsaw who pretends to a hiker named "Keith" and he said that he got lost and he needs food. He also said that he has a leg injury, but all of these are lies, since he is there to catch Thunder. The Dragon Club members knew he is suspicious all along, they planned to take him back to the Surface, but he escapes.

It was also revealed that he has trapped some dragons and had a Timberjack due it's ability of using its razor sharp wings to slice through full grown trees. He can even communicate with it with a whistle.

Buzzsaw left the whistle on a rock, which lead Tom and Thunder into a trap, but they had the whistle only to learn that it's a decoy. Tom told Buzzsaw that he will teach him how to train a dragon which is the Timberjack. Buzzsaw let him out but leaves Thunder inside the ice cage. Tom taught Buzzsaw how to train the Timberjack right way. They even rode on the Timberjack, but not as smooth as real dragon riding. Buzzsaw learned that the other riders came and were rescuing the captured dragons, believing he's been tricked, Buzzsaw pushed Tom out of the Timberjack, which made him fall, but Thunder got freed by his friends just in time to save Tom, so he did it. Buzzsaw used his whistle, but it turned out to be the decoy from earlier, since Tom just switched it before he fell, so Tom blew the whistle in order to communicate to the Timberjack that it is now free with Buzzsaw still tied to it.

Abilities, Talents, and Skills[]

  • Marksmanship: Buzzsaw seems to possess a fair amount of precision of aim when throwing his hatchet at targets, being able to throw it from several feet away and land right on the target he is aiming for.
  • Outdoor Survival Skills: Buzzsaw claims to be knowledgeable and skill in multiple methods of survival in the outdoors, having survived on his own the forests outside the Kullersen Fissure for several weeks with no other human contact. The truth behind his claims, however, is highly questionable, however, as despite being capable of setting up traps for Thunder, he has been shown to fall into them himself very easily.
  • Craftsmanship: Buzzsaw is shown to be very talented at woodcarving figures, as shown in "Fire Escape" when he crafted a very detailed and precise woodcarving of Thunder. It is also presumed he built reins that Old Jack wears throughout season 5. He was also able to build a lot of ice cages with limited resources.
  • Driving: Buzzsaw seems to be a fairly skilled driver, as he managed to evade many of the obstacles that were hindering his path while driving through the wildfire to his logging town. However, he is easily prone to distraction which caused him to crash before he could reach the town.
  • Whistle: With a carved whistle, he is able to lure small/medium dragons like Snowtails and Terrible Terrors into his traps by mimicking their calls. He also used it to make a Timberjack do his bidding, high notes to wild it up and low notes to calm it down.
  • Dragon Training: Thanks to Tom's Dragon training skills, Buzzsaw can now train some dragons and make them obey him, as shown by Old Jack, two Gronckles for Ford and Winston, and three Flame Throwers. With Old Jack and two Gronckles, he can even capture large dragons like an Octofin.
  • Hunting: Because of his life in a forest Buzzsaw seems to be a great hunter, because he knows a lot about hunting animals and can build many different traps.
  • Physical Strength: Buzzsaw, despite being of relatively average build, was able to drag a medium-sized Night Light for an impressive distance.
  • Intelligence: Buzzsaw, despite being mentally unstable, is shown to be a capable strategist as he tricked Tom multiple times and could create weapons by following the book of dragons easily.

Trivia[]

  • His personality traits are very similar to those of Dagur the Deranged. This includes abusing those who serve under them.
    • Also both he and Dagur become obsessed with revenge against a type of Fury dragon that belongs to the main protagonist of their respective series (Dagur sought revenge on the Night Fury: Toothless, while Buzzsaw seeks vengeance on the Night Light: Thunder). In the end, Buzzsaw redeemed himself, like Dagur.
    • It's possible that Leonard Burne is the descendent of Dagur, while Tom and Thunder are descendents of Hiccup and Toothless respectfully.
  • He’s allergic to synthetic fabrics.
  • He claims to be 5’9 but Ford says he’s not an inch over 5’7
  • Buzzsaw is the first villain in Dragons: The Nine Realms to reform. Similar to how Viggo Grimborn reformed in the last season of Race to the Edge, but Buzzsaw didn't perish during the battle of Jörmungandr.
