~ Ennis as he tries to kill Tara Lewis. |
Leonard Ennis is a supporting antagonist in season 11 of Criminal Minds. He is an incarcerated serial killer who is obsessed with Agent Tara Lewis of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), and who eventually tries to kill her during a prison riot.
He was portrayed by David L.M. McIntyre.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Ennis is a sexually sadistic psychopath who is obsessed with raping, torturing, and killing teenage girls. By the time he was arrested, he had murdered at least 14 girls, although he is suspected of killing many more.
During his incarceration, Ennis agrees to an interview with Dr. Tara Lewis, a forensic psychologist who studies serial killers for the FBI. They develop a rapport, and Ennis agrees to several more interviews with Lewis. Over time, Ennis becomes obsessed with Lewis and starts fantasizing about raping, torturing, and killing her, even though she, as an adult woman, does not fit his usual "type".
"The Night Watch"[]
The episode begins with Lewis interviewing Ennis about his first known victim, Suzy Johnson. She asks him what he felt while he was killing her, and he replies that he doesn't know. When she presses him that something must have compelled him to kill over and over again, he insists that murder is just something he does, as "people do things every day."
At the end of the episode, Lewis, having just joined the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), interviews Ennis again, Ennis having rescheduled a previous session. When she asks him why he rescheduled his meeting with her, he taunts her, saying that he is now the one interviewing her. He asks about her boyfriend, Doug, and she replies that they broke up. He taunts her further that Doug must have told her to choose between him and her job, which is indeed what happened, but Lewis replies that she chose herself, and continues the session.
"The Storm"[]
Ennis is transferred to the serial killer wing of Virginia Supermax Prison, on Lewis' recommendation. Shortly afterward, an anarchist group infiltrates the prison to help their leader, Eric Rawdon, escape, causing a prison break. The BAU is called in to help the warden get the prison back under control, and Lewis enters the wing where Ennis is being held, only to discover that he is not in his cell. Ennis surprises her from behind and accuses her of having him put in maximum security. He then has Johnson, one of the anarchists, release all the prisoners in the cell block.
Ennis, flanked by the other killers, advances on Lewis, preparing to make his long-held fantasy of brutalizing and killing her a reality. When one of the serial killers charges at Lewis, however, she shoots him. Lewis then tries to talk Ennis down, explaining that she does not want to hurt him, and is in fact trying to save his life. He refuses to listen and continues advancing on her, but stops when she tells him to look behind him; when he does as instructed, he sees a SWAT team, led by BAU Agent Aaron Hotchner, coming towards him. Two other killers charge at the SWAT tea, only to get shot, and Ennis realizes that he has been bested. He surrenders along with the other serial killers, who are then imprisoned once more, with prison authorities presumably punishing them for the attempted prison break with extra time added to their sentences and loss of privileges.
Trivia[]
- Ennis is inspired by Edmund Kemper, a.k.a. "The Co-Ed Killer", a serial killer and one of the prime subjects of interview by an FBI profiler, Bob Ressler, whom Kemper later attacked and made death threats against.
