Reed is a serial killer and thief responsible for a series of brutal home invasions that resulted in the murders of eight individuals, including two children. His criminal activities took place in 1990 and 1991 across three counties, where he tortured and killed entire families.
He is arrested shortly after and stands trial. However, due to the misconduct of officer Harry Morgan (who improperly dismissed a witness), he is released. That night, Harry gets drunk and follows Reed home from a bar and prepares to shoot him dead, but he is stopped by his adopted son Dexter, whom he trained to kill people who "deserve it". With Harry's approval, Dexter goes after Levi.
Dexter stalks Reed as he walks home and renders him unconscious with an injection of M-99, a powerful animal tranquilizer. When Reed regains consciousness, he finds that Dexter has tied him to a table and has surrounded him with pictures of his victims. When Dexter demands know why he murdered innocent people. Reed says that he wanted to see the fear in their eyes, especially the children; he then taunts Dexter that he is no different. Dexter replies that, unlike Reed, he has a "code", and proceeds to stab him to death. He then dismembers Reed;'s corpse and disposes of it in a dumpster.
