“ | No. This is mine. The god that sent me back, the god I serve in this world and yours, the god of flesh, hunger, and desire, my god, Leviathan, Lord of the Labyrinth. | „ |
~ Julia Cotton introducing Leviathan to Phillip Channard. |
Leviathan, also known as the God of Flesh, Hunger and Desire, is the overarching antagonist of the Hellraiser franchise. It is an mysterious god-like being who resides inside the extra-dimensional world known as the Labyrinth who is the overlord ruling the Cenobites, including their masters Pinhead and the Engineer.
As the title would suggest, Leviathan is the ruling deity over the human urges of lust and gluttony, but it also seems to have control over human cruelty and extreme fear. Under its dominion, the cenobites practice an extreme version of sadomasochism.
Appearance[]
The Leviathan, an abstract entity, takes on the shape of a colossal diamond rhombus made of shimmering silver. This magnificent entity gracefully hovers in the heart of The Labyrinth, the sacred realm that the Cenobites call home. Positioned at the very center, the Leviathan emanates a series of mysterious black beams of light. These enigmatic rays possess the power to compel anyone who unwittingly crosses their path to relive their past memories, plunging them into an immersive journey through their own personal history.
Biography[]
Origins[]
Leviathan's true origin is unknown, yet due to its extensive existence and control over the Cenobites and Hell for countless millennia, some speculate that it may be the fallen angel mentioned in the Bible. Leviathan possesses an intense fixation on law and order, regarding the realm of humanity and its fleshy nature as disorganized and incorrect. It utilizes the Cenobites as its soldiers in the battle against chaos and the physical form. The Labyrinth, which Leviathan oversees, symbolizes the intricate complexities of the human mind. According to ancient tales, Leviathan predates the existence of life itself. However, when life did emerge, the forces of nature and Chaos erupted across the world, breaching Leviathan's perfect order. This occurred eons ago, during a time when the world was teeming with vibrant and pulsating life. The pressure continued to mount until it forcefully ruptured through barriers it had been unaware of, thus unleashing its essence into Hell. This event simultaneously gave birth to light and introduced life into a desolate and shadowed domain.
Leviathan, in retaliation, launched a relentless assault, pulverizing and obliterating the chaotic existence that attempted to spread. However, it didn't take long for life to resurface at Leviathan's doorstep, threatening to engulf his dominion as verdant green gradually replaced dull grey, making one world indistinguishable from the other. In response, Leviathan reassessed its position and devised a new strategy, an intricate and all-encompassing plan of catastrophic proportions. Exploring the detested realms across the globe, Leviathan eventually stumbled upon what it sought - humanity. In the realm of dreams, Leviathan descended upon mankind, softly whispering the codes of logic in the clandestine language of science, which solely conveyed the vivid vision ablaze within its own mind. This vision portrayed a realm brimming with splendid and magnificent tools, machines, and weaponry. Guiding man in their utilization, Leviathan unveiled how to employ these instruments against their own world, enabling them to subject all life surrounding them to submission, bending it to their will, and annihilating any obstacle obstructing their path. Swiftly emerging from the muck, man eagerly grasped their inaugural weapon, proceeding to ravage everything in their vicinity, mercilessly slaughtering adversaries and seizing their very skins, surpassing the ferocity of any creature ever witnessed, adorning themselves with the spoils. The world, in response, commenced to hemorrhage, descending into an eerie silence, growing increasingly stagnant, languishing, and perishing.
During this period, Hell was restored to its original state of flawless organization. However, Leviathan, unsatisfied with this restoration, continued to infiltrate the dreams of humanity, carefully selecting its followers to spread its doctrine. These devoted apostles played a crucial role in establishing the groundwork for Leviathan's sinister plan. As time passed, with each layer of concrete obliterating any trace of its adversaries and colossal structures dominating the skyline, the resemblance between the two worlds grew increasingly indistinguishable.
Hellbound: Hellraiser 2[]
Julia Cotton, who had recently been brought back to life, claimed that she had been granted freedom by Leviathan, the god-like figure, with a specific purpose of bringing Doctor Phillip Channard into the realm of the gods. Julia presented Channard to Leviathan, who used its dark light to expose the doctor's unsettling past, revealing him to be a sociopath. It was then that Julia disclosed to Channard that Leviathan had always intended to use her as a tool to lure more souls from Earth into The Labyrinth, ultimately aiming to expand its followers. This revelation left Channard deeply disturbed. Driven by Julia, a distraught Channard was pushed into a colossal chamber where a profound transformation awaited him. Emerging from the chamber, Channard was filled with regret for his previous reluctance. In order to complete his metamorphosis, Leviathan established a connection with the newly transformed cenobite by inserting a tentacle, shaped in a phallic manner, into the doctor's mind. United, the two embarked on a journey back to Earth, where they embarked on a mission to capture the mentally unstable patients of the Channard Mental Institution. Curiously, Channard had intentionally left behind various enigmatic puzzles, known as Lament Configurations, for these individuals to solve.
Ironically, the Lament Figuration ultimately became the downfall of Leviathan. While exploring The Labyrinth, Kirsty witnesses Pinhead and his followers transform the puzzle box into a diamond, rendering it ineffective. Interestingly, among Channard's patients is Tiffany, a seemingly unresponsive young girl who possesses exceptional puzzle-solving skills. Faced with the nightmarish horrors of The Labyrinth and terrified by Channard's Cenobite form, Tiffany is compelled to solve the puzzle box once more. Astonishingly, she effortlessly rearranges the diamond, causing Leviathan to transform into a larger-scale puzzle box resembling the Lament Configuration. This sudden shift prompts the souls of numerous victims to escape and return to Earth at an alarming pace, while Channard meets his demise by losing his head in the process.
It remains a mystery whether the demise of Leviathan was caused by this particular event; for it has not resurfaced ever since. In upcoming movies, an intriguing twist occurs as Pinhead himself assumes control over the Lament Configuration, a notorious puzzle box notorious for its ability to ensnare the souls of those unfortunate enough to solve its enigmatic riddles. However, there is a significant alteration in the manner in which the victims' tormented spirits are imprisoned. Instead of being confined within the intricate maze-like Labyrinth, they are now condemned to suffer within the depths of their own personalized hells.
Hellraiser VIII: Hellworld[]
In this latest addition to the Hellraiser film franchise, the enigmatic Cenobites and their dark legend have gained widespread popularity and become the foundation for a captivating online gaming experience known as Hellworld. The intricate storyline predominantly unfolds within a grand and imposing mansion, aptly named The Leviathan House as a tribute to the deity that the Cenobites serve. Astonishingly, it is unveiled that this extraordinary mansion was actually crafted by the renowned Philip Lemerchand himself, the brilliant mind behind the creation of the mystical Lament Configurations. As the movie progresses towards its climactic moment, a startling revelation emerges - the Cenobites are indeed real, thereby implying the existence of the formidable Leviathan as well.
Powers & Abilities[]
Leviathan possesses the extraordinary ability to bring forth any cenobite, employing any manner, structure, or manifestation that deems suitable to fulfill its purpose. Upon initial encounter, Leviathan presents itself as unassuming; a mere, flawless geometric figure rotating at the core of its domain - the domain of the beholder. However, as its deep black light casts upon a mortal, its essence permeates their being, infiltrating every nook and cranny. Every past transgression and misdeed committed by the individual is experienced in excruciating detail. Eventually, when this profound encounter concludes, Leviathan possesses a greater understanding of the person's innermost self than they possess themselves.
This creature sustains itself by consuming the souls of individuals who have been condemned to Hell, yet are judged as unfit to join the ranks of the Cenobites.
There is evidence to suggest that he possesses the extraordinary capability to ensnare individuals within an everlasting cycle of memories, which he can manipulate and restart at will. This remarkable ability was demonstrated when he imprisoned both Kristy and Spencer within an enigmatic orb, compelling them to repeatedly experience various recollections. The frequency with which he employs this power and whether it is his ultimate weapon remain uncertain. It is conjectured that he only resorts to utilizing this power when an individual poses a significant and specific danger to him.
Weaknesses[]
Leviathan, the powerful entity, experiences a significant weakening and undergoes a temporary loss of power when a human being successfully solves the intricate puzzle known as the Lament Configuration while residing in the depths of Hell. As a result of this occurrence, Leviathan transforms back into its original cube shape, and the souls it had captured within it hastily flee in all directions. In the comic book "Pinhead #6", the Ostlund Construct is introduced as a detailed plan aiming to annihilate Hell, which Aggregate, a character, nearly accomplished in his attempt to destroy Leviathan. However, the Ostlund Construct was missing a crucial mechanical component that only Pinhead possessed, ultimately preventing the complete obliteration of Leviathan. Despite this, the cracking open of Leviathan's form allowed numerous trapped souls to break free and escape their confinement.
Other Media[]
BOOM Comics series[]
According to the BOOM comic books, Leviathan holds a deep fascination with maintaining law and order, perceiving humans as inherently prone to chaos and disorder. As a means to counteract this perceived chaos, Leviathan employs Cenobites as its loyal soldiers, utilizing them to combat both the unruliness of human nature and the vulnerability of the physical form.
Trivia[]
- In the timeline of novels (Hellraiser: a film by Clive Barker, Scarlet Gospels and Hellraiser: the Toll) Leviathan does not exist and Hell is ruled by Satan, who the Hell Priest (the literary incarnation of Pinhead) wants to oust to take his place as lord of Hell. In the continuity of the novel Hellbound Heart, however, the role of lord of the Cenobites is covered by the Engineer, and also in this case it seems that Heaven also exists in addition to Hell.
