Unlike most demons, the Leviathan is not formed from generic Hell Mass, but instead from the bodies of the Sullen, a name used for those in the Ocean Styx who have given up fighting for air and instead lay at the bottom of the ocean, drowning eternally. The Sullen, in their motionlessness, were eventually fused together by the same force that created the other demons, becoming the biblical Leviathan, an abomination prophesized to be at the end of the world. The heart, which houses the souls of the Sullen in endless anguish as their flesh, veins and nerves writhe and mutate, attempted to escape its body, but Gabriel struck it down with his divine spears, pinning it back onto its head, unable to move. Although the world ended, the Leviathan remains trapped in the Ocean Styx, growing ever longer as more of Wrath's sinners give up and sink to the bottom.
~ The Leviathan's terminal description.

The Leviathan is a minor antagonist in Ultrakill, serving as the final boss of the fifth layer of Hell, Wrath. It is a giant sea monster made from the fusing bodies of the Sullen, a monster formed as the sinners of its layer lost the will to reach the ocean's surface and sink to its floor. It is presently the only enemy in the game to be labeled a Supreme Demon, debuting in Level 5-4, "Leviathan".

Appearance[]

The Leviathan through the inert forms of the sinners of its level, their flesh constantly contorting and twisting to shape its form. As such, the Leviathan has an appearance that is an amalgam of humanoid elements, its pink, fleshy body covered by a armored shell of human faces. While mostly snake-like in appearance, the Leviathan's upper jaw has the image of a contorted human form, while stone arms line its torso and back. On the top of its head is its heart, which houses the souls of the sinners containing it. In this state, it takes the form of a humanoid figure made of flesh, constantly in agony from both the creature's constantly shifting form and the four cross-shaped spears jabbed into its chest.

Biography[]

The Leviathan, unlike most Demons, is not made up of normal Hell Mass. Rather it is made of bodies of those who had previously drowned in the Ocean Styx, collectively known as "the Sullen". Having long since given up trying to fight the crowds of sinners for a fleeting chance to breath, the Sullen have allowed themselves to sink to the Styx's floor, slowly mering together into a singular form. In constant pain from this transformation, the souls of these pitiable sinners have once attempted to take a humanoid form and escape their prison, only to have been pinned to the beast by Gabriel.

V1 fights against the beast in the level of the same name, where it is seen flipping the ship seen in "Ship of Fools" before roaring at their foe. The Leviathan's attacks consist of it lunging towards the player after a telegraphed delay, unleashing a swarm of Hell Orbs from its maw, and swinging its tail in a semi-circular motion.
