“ | There was a time when Newtopia was truly great, but that greatness was stolen from us. Centuries of prosperity brought to an end because of me. I was weak, trusting those who said they were my friends and because of that, the music box was taken under my watch. It cost us everything and after a thousand years, no one even remembers our legacy. But now, at long last, the box is back. And with its power, Newtopia will be returned to glory. For you see, my ancestors weren't frail explorers; they were glorious conquerors! | „ |
~ King Andrias about his ancestors. |
The Leviathan Family are the main antagonists of Disney Channel animated series Amphibia. It is the royal newt family of Amphibia that attempted to conquer the multiverse using the Calamity Box. Upon their demise, members would upload their consciousnesses into the machine called the Core, which is the true ruler of Amphibia and the family's superior.
History[]
Beginnings[]
Corruption and Conquest[]
Long ago, the Guardian created three mystical gemstones and sent them to Amphibia as a test in hopes of finding a suitable replacement for themself. Valeriana, the wisest newt of them all, created a device called the Calamity Box that used the gemstones to enable travel between dimensions so she can use it to unite the kingdoms under one banner of interdenominational conquest, which led to a golden age of peace in Amphibia.
However, the box came into the possession of the Leviathan Family, who used the box to conquer other worlds and strip them bare of their resources, leaving Valeriana to be burned by guilt and sadness by the sight of subjugation on other worlds. Using the stolen resources, the Leviathans established themselves as its ruling family, creating an advanced metropolis named Newtopia. They also invented a legion of frog-like robotic warriors to aid them in their conquests. The Olms constantly warned the Leviathans that using the gems in such a way would lead to disaster, but their concerns were always dismissed.
At some point, the Leviathans conquered the world of the Moss Men, and used the specimens to greatly improve their medical technology. At another point, they invaded the realm of the Shadowfish and examined them, learning how to "truly conquer death". Thus, they invented a powerful, long-lasting automation robot known as the Core where they began to upload their own minds into them once their bodies began to die so that they could live on forever. They kept the Core's existence a secret from their subjects, but the ruling monarchs were able to communicate with the robot with a device disguised as the royal crown.
Losing the Box[]
Roughly more than 1,000 years ago, Aldrich Leviathan came to power and also fathered a son named Andrias, who was once close friends with a toad warrior named Barrel and a female frog named Leif, who acted as Newtopia Castle's gardener. Once Andrias was old enough, Aldrich introduced his son to the Core and entrusted him with the key to the chamber containing the Calamity Box, thus appointing him to lead the next invasion, which was to take place on Earth.
Andrias then showed the box off to his friends, but when Leif got a hold of the box, she saw a vision showing the destruction of Amphibia. She then explained what she saw to King Aldrich and suggested that they should stop using the box for conquest, but Aldrich, who conversed this with the Core, dismissed her concerns as "nonsense". When Andrias also refused to adhere to her warnings, she ultimately chose to steal the box and hide it on Earth. Aldrich berated his son for allowing the Calamity Box to be stolen, but informed him of a prophecy that detailed the box returning to Amphibia someday. He then ordered that all their advanced technology to be hidden along with all knowledge of of their legacy until the box could be recovered, and only then will Andrias redeem himself in the eyes of his family and be allowed to join them within the Core.
Later on, Aldrich's body died and his mind was uploaded into the Core; upon which, Andrias became king, but was ultimately just a puppet ruler while the Core was truly in charge. In order to live long enough to wait for the box to reappear, Andrias turned himself into a cyborg to extend his own longevity.
Present[]
Retrieving the Box[]
A millennium later, Andrias met a young human named Marcy Wu, who had arrived in Amphibia from Earth after tricking her friends into stealing the Calamity Box. The Core demanded that Andrias eliminate Marcy, as she was one of the chosen heroes of the prophecy destined to destroy their legacy, but Andrias, having grown to like Marcy and her quirky ways, suggested that they instead befriend her and her friends, Anne Boonchuy and Sasha Waybright, so that they can trick them into giving up their powers back to the box and thus avert the prophecy, which the Core, including Aldrich himself, agreed to.
Upon retrieving the fully-powered box, Andrias revealed his true colors and attempted to capture them all, but was then shocked to learn that Anne still held on to some of the box's powers. This caused Andrias to deem Anne as the main threat to his and the Core's plans to conquer the mutliverse. After mortally wounding Marcy when she tried to take the box, Andrias had her life saved so that she could be used as a vessel for the Core, thus becoming "Darcy".
Invasion of Earth[]
Afterwards, Andrias and Darcy capture the heroes when they led an attempt to steal back the Calamity Box, and then used it to begin their invasion of Earth. The heroes managed to escape and Anne herself battled Andrias while Sasha battled against Darcy. Meanwhile, Aldrich attempts to convince Marcy to assimilate with the Core, but she ultimately refuses.
The villains initially gained the upper hand, but Sprig intervenes and shows Andrias a message from Leif, who was revealed to be his ancestor, which brings the newt king to his knees in regret of his actions. Furious by this, Darcy tries to control Andrias to make him resume the fight, but this allows Sasha to defeat them and release Marcy from the Core's control, while Andrias allows himself to be defeated by Anne.
Final Battle and the permanent end of the Leviathan Family's Legacy[]
After returning to Amphibia, the Core, operating from Darcy's helmet, travels to the moon and takes control of it, planning to crash it into the planet to wipe out all life in a final act of spite towards the heroes. However, Anne, Sasha and Marcy use the full power of the Calamity Box to fight back, destroying the Core's army of mechanical monstrosities. During this, Aldrich calls out to his son for aid, but Andrias, finally having had enough of his family's evil ways and his father's emotional abuse, decides to help the heroes by having his Frobots push back the moon instead. When this proves ineffective, Anne then chooses to use the full power of gemstones to destroy the moon along with the Core at the cost of both the stones and her own life (though she was resurrected later on by the Guardian), thus putting an end to the Leviathan Family's dreadful legacy for good, much to the relief of Andrias.
Nine months later, Andrias is now serving his sentence of community service, happily working as a gardener to restore the land that both he and the Core destroyed.
Trivia[]
- The term "Leviathan" is based on the giant sea monster of the same name.
- And of course, all the members of this family are all giant salamanders that easily dwarf the series's main cast.
