Mum? [...] Yeah, it's me, Mum. Mum, I'm sorry. [...] No, listen, you just listen to me. I might not-- Mum, listen. I might not... I might not see you, Mum. You see, I've been hurt and I... well, I'm not feeling too good. You're gonna hear about it. Yeah? But I want you to remember something for me, okay? None of the things that have happened, yeah? Like we always said, none of them were of anything to do with you. Okay? Did you hear what I said? [...] I wish you were too, Mum. I wish you were too, but you don't wanna be here, Mum. [chuckes] Listen. You just need to know that I love you. Okay? I'll see you soon, Mum. Okay? I will.
~ Lewis' final conversation with his mom, Elaine.

Lewis Atterton, otherwise known as Ryan Cunningham, is a major antagonist of Series 1 of the Apple TV+ British drama-thriller miniseries Hijack.

He is the younger brother of Stuart Atterton, and an operative for the Cheapside Firm. Lewis, his brother, and 3 other terrorists hijack flight KA29 in hopes to have the British government release Edgar Janssen and John Bailey-Brown from prison.

He is portrayed by Jack McMullen.

Personality[]

Lewis initially presented himself to be an intimidating and ruthless terrorist to the passengers of flight KA29. However, once he was injured, he was shown to be a rather decent man. He is shown to love his family dearly. He was affected when his dad was killed by the Cheapside Firm, and Lewis was the one who found him dead in the hall. He even protested against doing the hijacking, saying he wasn't ready for it.

He loved his mom, as he decided to call her to say what he wanted to say to his mom before he died. He also loved his brother, even though he didn't explicitly show it. Lewis knew what would happen if Stuart landed the plane to get the former medical attention. However, Lewis told David, a doctor/passenger on board, and Sam Nelson, to tell Stuart not to land it. In Sam's words, "He didn't want you to save him. He wanted to save you."

He was even shown to be kind to David, as he talked to him about music and football briefly, and even laughed when David said that if you're not a fan of Leeds, you're not worth having as a fan. When he died, everyone who helped him was saddened, especially Stuart. Even David and Sam were saddened, as they both grew to care for the man.

Biography[]

Past[]

Lewis is the younger brother of Stuart Atterton and son of Elaine and Peter Atterton. His father was a loyal operative for the Cheapside Firm for nearly 20 years. However, Edgar Janssen falsely believed he grassed to the police, and thus, had him assassinated by Terry Reid. Lewis later found him in their home, shot dead in the hall. This affected the whole family, especially Elaine.

At some point, Lewis and Stuart started working for the Cheapside Firm, eventually being assigned along with 3 other operatives, Jamie Constantinou, Terry Reid, and Jaden Dahir, to hijack flight KA29 to coerce the British government into releasing Janssen and John Bailey-Brown from prison. Lewis was even mentioned to have been in a relationship with Jamie in the past, being affected by their breakup. However, they still appear to have an occasional friendship with each other, with Jamie pitching in to help Lewis recover from his stab wounds on the flight.

Hijack[]

Lewis boarded flight KA29 disguised as a passenger named Ryan Cunningham who was traveling with his wife, Bella Cunningham, who was actually Jamie. Alongside Terry, Jamie, Jaden, and under the leadership of Stuart, the terrorists hijack and seize control of the plane. Lewis also takes everyone's devices. They also take control of the cockpit, as Lewis and Stuart blackmail the pilot into doing so by holding his girlfriend hostage, Colette Fisher, a flight attendant.

Throughout the flight, Lewis keeps multiple passengers in check, including an (rather annoying) American, the pilot, Sam, and an elderly passenger in business class. Stuart then talks to Lewis and Jamie, telling them to restrict the passengers' movements, otherwise they will kill one. Lewis strongly objects, saying that Stuart gave him their word that no one would get killed, before he reluctantly complies. When a fight between Jaden and two passengers kicks off, Lewis heads to the aisle to put the passengers back in their seats, before one of them stabs him with a pair of scissors.

The ensuing chaos then comes to a brief halt when Stuart shoots and kills a passenger, threatening to do the same to everyone else. After putting the dead passenger in a bathroom, Lewis confronts him about this, before Stuart notices his wounds, advising Lewis to seek first aid from the cabin crew. While intially a bit rude to those who helped him, Lewis eventually becomes a lot nicer as the wound grows severely worse, especially to Sam.

Lewis then talks to Sam about their families, eventually deciding to call the former's mom, Elaine. Lewis calls and talks to her about how he might not see her again, that he loves her, and that none of their tragedies were because of her. Sam then calls for a doctor to help. David, a passenger on board, who is a doctor, comes and uses a pen to get oxygen in Lewis' lungs. When Stuart comes, he tells to doctor to keep doing his job, before talking to Lewis, comforting him.

Sam then tells Stuart that he needs to land the plane to get Lewis medical attention, as he says David told him that Lewis has less than an hour with the treatment he has. Upon hearing the same thing from the doctor, Stuart goes to Jamie with it, who strongly objects, saying that the mission is more important, and that many things could go wrong if they landed the plane. Meanwhile, Lewis then briefly talks with David about football, chuckling at his Leeds joke, before desperately gasping for help. David then dissolves some pills in some water to help Lewis drink it.

Stuart then goes through with landing the plane, having Officer Kovacs arrange it, whom secretly makes the Hungarian ATC aware of the hijacking. Eventually, they get permission to land from the Hungarians, who secretly put armed units near the runway so they can apprehend the terrorists. Meanwhile, David tells Lewis that they will be landing soon, and that there will be doctors to help him. However, Lewis seems to suspect that the plan will go south, and that the Hungarians will either kill or apprehend all the terrorists, including Stuart.

Stuart then talks to Terry, who also strongly objects to the landing for similar reasons to Jamie, that it's a suicide mission, and that they need to get the mission done exactly like they said they would. Stuart then challenges Terry's opinion, still deciding to land the plane. Terry then threatens the doctor to tell Stuart that Lewis will be okay, and that they don't need to land it.

Terry then tells Sam why he doesn't want them to land, that if they don't carry out the mission like they said they would, the people they work for, Janssen and John, would kill the terrorists and their families, confessing that they hired Terry to assassinate Lewis' father. Lewis then pleads for them not to land the plane, so Stuart wouldn't be possibly killed by the Hungarians.

While Sam, Terry, and David go to Stuart with this information, Lewis then pulls the pen placed inside his chest out, killing himself in order to save Stuart. When the rest of them discover Lewis' death, they are all shocked, especially Stuart, who appears distraught by Lewis' death. The landing is then called off, and Lewis' helpers all return to their seats, all shocked by what just happened. Lewis' dead body is then put in a bathroom by Terry, who is very remorseful over the former's death.

Trivia[]

  • Lewis is currently the only dead terrorist of the original five of flight KA29, and the only one to meet a redemptive, let alone sympathetic fate.
  • He is also the 3rd member of his family to die, following his father's assassination, and his mother's suicide.
  • He is also the 2nd person on flight KA29 to be killed, following the death of Sheena Francis at the hands of Lewis' older brother, Stuart.
