~ Li Jue to Wang Yun. |
Li Jue and Guo Si are an antagonistic duo from the 14th-century Chinese classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms and it's multiple adaptations. They are Dong Zhuo's generals and major antagonists during the Coallition against Dong Zhuo and Wang Yun's plot to overthrow him and restore the Han.
Biography[]
Li Jue and Guo Si were both natives of Liang Province and joined general Dong Zhuo with whom they participated in many battles most notably against the Yellow Turbans who rebelled against the Han in 184 AD. They soon became the top ranked generals of his army. In 189 AD, Dong Zhuo entered the capital city of Luoyang with his army, overthrew the Emperor, had him killed and replaced him with his brother as a puppet whom he controlled. Guo Si and Li Jue helped him slaughter the remaining eunuchs who opposed his rule. He quickly took control of the army and declared himself Chancellor. He even hired the mighty warrior Lu Bu as his top general and personal bodyguard. Even though Guo Si and Li Jue weren't pleased with Dong Zhuo's trust in Lu Bu, they were loyal to him and continue to serve him, committing many crimes in the process.
In 190 AD, a coalition led by Yuan Shao was formed in order to stop Dong Zhuo. Li Jue and Guo Si fought many battles against the coalition armies. Cao Cao, a former minion of Dong Zhuo who joined the Coalition, while informing Yuan Shao and the other warlords about Dong Zhuo's Army, he ranked Li Jue and Guo Si, as Dong Zhuo's second and third best warriors. After Dong Zhuo lost some battles, and the coalition armies approached the capital, Dong Zhuo was suggested by his adviser Li Ru, to move the capital to Chang'an. Upon their lord's orders, Li Jue and Guo Si burned Loyang, slaughtered innocent people, stealing their property and punished whoever disagreed to leave or give them what they wanted. Soon, the coalition was disbanded but Dong Zhuo had to deal with internal problems as one of his ministers, Wang Yun rebelled against him and took Lu Bu on his side.
Dong Zhuo was killed by Lu Bu and Wang Yun took his place but refused to spare Li Jue and Guo Si despite them wanting to surrender, as they have committed many crimes in the past. This backfired, as Li Jue and Guo Si invaded Chang'an, defeated Lu Bu's army causing him to flee and murdered Wang Yun along with many ministers, thus taking power on their own hands and controling the Emperor of Han. Li Jue was the new leader and Guo Si his second in command. A few years later the two started to fight among themselves, giving a chance to the Emperor to escape and fall into Cao Cao's hands. They soon lost their power and continued to live as bandits, even battling and losing to Cao Cao's forces before getting killed by their former subordinates. Guo Si's head is said to have been presented to Cao Cao by Wu Xi.
