Liebe is a major supporting character in the Black Clover franchise. He is believed to be the lowest ranking devil among his kind and is the source of Asta's anti magic.
Originally, Liebe was a devil that came from with Licht's grimoire after he had fallen into despair, before eventually finding his way into the possession of Asta. However, in truth, there is more to Liebe's story and motives than what it may seem at first.
Liebe was originally voiced by Kenichiro Matsuda in the Japanese dub of the anime before being replaced by Nobuhiko Okamoto (who also voiced Ghiaccio in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind), while he is voiced by Cris George in the English dub of the anime, later being voiced by Bryce Papenbrook (who also voices Eren Jaeger in Attack on Titan, and Zeldris in The Seven Deadly Sins). Both Matsuda and George also voiced the series' narrator.
Appearance[]
Liebe shares an appearance similar to other devils such as Zagred. He has a tall, lanky build with long, thin arms, long horns and sharp claws. He possesses large wings and a thin tail with an arrow-tipped end. He is mostly seen in the Underworld and as a result, Liebe is depicted as a black figure with red eyes and mouth.
When Liebe finally gains his physical form, he appears as a humanoid figure, similar to Zagred, but possesses the characteristics of Asta, having his short hair and short appearance. Liebe's right arm also appears to have cracks around it, likely due to the deal he made with Asta where Asta exchanged his arm for his power.
Personality[]
Very little was known about Liebe, even among his own species. From what he has shown, he appears to be rather condescending as he looks down upon his superiors like Zagred and takes pleasure in watching his opponents fail miserably.
Liebe's true motives and goals remained unknown during this time but like many other devils, he appeared to desire a physical body for him to inhabit and take over, as shown when he attempted to take over his host, Asta, during his battle with the Witch Queen, trying to manipulate and persuading him in giving up his body. However, at the same time, Liebe didn't appear to be as malicious as Zagred or Megicula, as he seems to be somewhat on even terms with Asta and is willing to make deals with him, in exchange for his body. Nonetheless, when Liebe made his appearance when exchanging his power with Asta, those around him could sense his menacing aura, including Asta himself.
Later on, however, when Asta faces Liebe in person, Asta could sense that Liebe doesn't truly possess homicidal intentions, despite his claims that of desiring to kill him. In truth, Liebe holds a great disdain towards his kind, due to the constant abuse he was subjected to during his life and was initially rejected by humanity, due to his nature of being a devil. Liebe's view on humanity changed when he met Licita, who raised him like he was her son and showered him with kindness. This bond between him and Licita showed a softer side of Liebe that made him value her like his own mother. Unfortunately, his mother would too suffer as she was killed by his superior, Lucifero. The death of Licita only caused Liebe to resent Lucifero and his kind as a whole even more, as his only driving force now was nothing but his unquenched hatred towards the devils.

Background[]
The devil that would become Asta's close companion was one of the many devils that lived within the Underworld, though he was unique in the sense that he possessed no mana at all. Due to this, this devil was seen as the weakest among his kind and was subjected to constant bullying and abuse, as a result. One day, the highest among them, Lucifero, had pulled him out from the Underworld and instead threw him into the world of humans. There, the devil roamed around freely on his own, but was rejected and feared by those he came across, due to his nature as a devil. At that point, he was ready to accept death but before he could subject himself, he was found by a young woman named Licita, who brought him back to her home.
Licita was surprised by her encounter with the little devil when she came across a five-leaf clover grimoire, but she was not frightened by him as she saw him as an injured kid, much to the devil's surprise. Licita explains to him about her magic that causes her to steal mana from those around her and due to this, she has secluded herself alone in a small house. She noted that the devil was not affected by her and deduced that he had no mana. As a result, she ends up raising the devil as her own child.
Since then, the two were able to develop a mother and son relationship during their time and the devil was given its name, Liebe. Licita was grateful to have Liebe around her and thanked him for accompanying her. She believed devils are not always bad guys and as such, she saw Liebe as a good person. Before Liebe could respond, however, his body was taken over by Lucifero and uses his body to as a means to manifest into the human world. Licita attempts to stop him but Lucifero manages to kill her. Lucifero noted how powerful she was that was able to stop him and decided to leave Liebe be for the time being before disappearing entirely. As Licita slowly dies in front of Liebe, she apologizes to him for being foolish and promises that she will place him within the five-leaf clover grimoire, so that he will one day get strong enough to defeat Lucifero.

- Anti Magic: Despite his supposed low ranking status. Liebe possesses a special power among his brethren that allows him to nullify any kind of magic.
Abilities[]
- Possession: As a devil itself, Liebe in particular has the ability to possess a being and take over their body, making them their host. Though in the case with Asta, he has been somewhat unsuccessful of completely taking over. He has been able to take over parts of his body such as his right arm.
- Power Bestowal: As the devil of Asta, Liebe can share his power with his host, though in exchange for control of his host body.
Trivia[]
- Liebe's name is in German, which translates to "love" in English, reflecting upon Lictia's motherly love for him.
- Before his name's reveal, Liebe is more often referred as simply the Devil, the Anti-Magic Devil and "Asta's Devil" (in the ending credits of Episode 120).
- His original Japanese voice actor, Kenichiro Matsuda, also voiced other characters including Gordon Agrippa, Kaiser Granvorka, the entire Agrippa Family as well as their pet dog Nuanally.
- This was played with in the "Next Episode" section of Episode 156, when Liebe's voice could be heard at first before it switched to the narrator's voice. Whether it's just a gag on the voice actor, or it implied that it was actually Liebe narrating the story all along, remained uncertain.
- Both of Liebe's later Japanese and English voice actors also voice Rin Okumura from Blue Exorcist.
