Biography[]
Past[]
Like the other Ignis, Lightning was an AI created as a result of the Hanoi Project's experimentations on young children. Lightning was modelled after Jin Kusanagi whom he enjoyed tormenting. In the years following the Hanoi Incident, he would create the Cyberse World alongside his fellow Ignis. Lightning would run simulations of how humanity's future would be affected by the Ignis and found that his existence alone would lead to the destruction of both groups. He then infected his creator Professor Kogami with a computer virus to prevent the latter from learning this truth. Kogami's son Ryoken would later attack the Ignis by attacking the Cyberse World. The attack resulted in the disappearance of Ai and gave Lightning an excuse for his hatred towards humanity. Lightning would then set in motion an elaborate scheme to wipe out humanity so that the Ignis could reign supreme. To accomplish this goal, he designed the powerful Judgment Arrows Link Spell card, altered the personality of another Ignis named Windy to become more malicious, and created Bohman, an advanced AI that could unite all of the Ignis in one perfect body.
Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS[]
Lightning has Bohman capture the consciousness data of Jin Kusanagi so that the latter can act as his host body. He allows his subordinates like Windy, Bohman, and Haru to duel Playmarker and his allies, only becoming personally involved when absolutely necessary. In the few times he does duel, Lighting shows that he is an incredibly powerful duelist by defeating both Shepherd and Spectre with little difficulty. In his final duel with Revolver, he also shows that he is not above cheating as he holds Jin's consciousness as leverage to prevent Revolver from dealing the finishing blow. It is here that Lightning finally confirms that he is responsible for all of the conflict in the series thus far including Dr. Kogami's virus infection, Windy's brainwashing, and the creation of Bohman for the purpose of uniting the Ignis. Likewise, Revolver also reveals that Lightning was the reason why humans and Ignis cannot coexist. His heinous actions were motivated by his inferiority complex and desperation for survival. Lightning's lack of remorse and dishonest tactics finally cause a disapproving Bohman to take Jin's consciousness data away from him. His duel with Revolver ultimately ends in a draw but Lightning is able to convert some of Jin's leftover data into a single lifepoint. Lightning tries to convince Bohman to lend him some power but the latter refuses. Bohman proposes that Lightning lend his power instead so the more advanced AI can become even more powerful. Accepting his defeat, Lightning allows himself to be absorbed by Bohman. When Ai enters the Neural Link, he sees Lightning and the other Ignis slowly being absorbed. Lightning tells Bohman about Ai's location but due to his weakned state, the other Ignis are able to overpower him. Although he is forced to give some of his power to Ai, he gives one final taunt to his fellow Ignis before being fully absorbed by Bohman.
Before his death, Lightning left a recorded message for Ai in the case that he and Bohman were defeated. Ai later discovers the message in the Cyberse World. Lighting reveals that as the sole surviving Ignis, Ai will be the catalyst of humanity's end. He gives one final taunting laugh before Ai destroys the message, ending Lightning for good.
