~ Doppelganger's last words. |
Lilith (リリス), originally simply known as Doppelganger (ドッペルゲンガー), is the secondary antagonist of Madou Monogatari Hachamecha Kimatsu Shiken. She was thought to be nothing more than a one-off villain in that game, but as the official timeline expanded her backstory, she grew to be one of the most important characters in Madou Monogatari lore.
She is one of the most powerful mages in the world. Her journey in the art of sorcery eventually led her to Phantom God's labyrinth, where she would become the first person to defeat him in combat and obtain the right to own the Seraphim Orb, granting her control over all of life. She never reveals what she did with all that power, but it is clear that she regrets it.

~ Doppelganger encounters Arle Nadja in the Phantom Zone. |
After Schezo Wegey sacrifices himself to save Arle from Phantom God, Arle finds herself trapped in the Phantom Zone, a dimension where negative emotions are heightened, eventually consuming their hosts. Doppelganger appears before Arle and claims to have been born from her twisted emotions. With two Arles in the picture, Doppelganger proposes a duel to the death to decide who should have the right to be the real "Arle Nadja". Playfully, she initially claims to want Arle dead, but as Arle manages to get through the Phantom Zone thanks to advice from Doppelganger, she slowly softens her attitude towards her, and the two develop a friendship of sorts, respecting each other as fellow magicians.
Doppelganger and Arle meet face to face. Unable to contain her excitement for the battle, Doppelganger heals Arle to full strength, claiming that she wants to take her on at her best. Doppelganger loses the fight, and afterwards she creates a magic warp circle back to the Ancient Maze where Arle came from. Doppelganger warns Arle not to challenge Phantom God, as she would be completely annihilated just like Schezo was, but Arle still insists on fighting him. Doppelganger then explains that she must first tame the four other guardians and obtain the Holy Robes before she can even think about challenging the Master Guardian Phantom God. Worried for her safety, she gives Arle the last of her magic powers.
Before the two part ways she decides to ask Arle one last question. She asks Arle what she would do with Phantom God's treasure, what she would do if she had the power to rule over the entire universe. Arle says that she has no interest in such powers, and that she believes that no mortal, good or evil, should have that much influence over everything. Doppelganger says that she expected this answer from her, and satisfied, vanishes into nothingness as a result of their battle, leaving behind a sad Arle, who just lost her new found friend.
Doppelganger watches over Arle from the beyond, praying that Arle does not commit the same sins she did. Doppelganger knows Arle will obtain Phantom God's treasure whether she likes it or not, as those chosen by Carbuncle to be under his protection will always carry fates of misfortune. Doppelganger dies before she is able to finish her last sentence, but she heavily implies that there is some deep connection between her and Arle, as if they were related somehow.
Madou Monogatari Timeline[]
Over 11,000 years before Arle was born, Lilith was a warrior who protected humanity from Lucifer, the warrior chosen by the gods to wipe them out. She sought the Seraphim Orb to free the world from the laws set in place by the creator that state that all life must eventually come to an end to be recreated. With its powers Lilith created a merge of worlds, what is now known as the Madou World, free from the gods and their natural laws. This would be referred to as Lilith's miracle, and would allow her to reach a higher plane of existence. She knew that this would not last forever, however, and that the creator would eventually come to destroy what she had created.
The miracle she caused with Lucifer's help would somehow lead to Arle Nadja becoming the only creature free from the creator's cycle. Arle would later go on to defeat the creator, which also led to the destruction of the Madou world. But just as Lilith had feared, Arle would ultimately suffer a tragic end.
Trivia[]
- Her real name, Lilith, was revealed in the official Madou Timeline.
- With the series' abrupt end, Lilith's true identity was never revealed. There are two common theories:
- She is Arle's mother. Her "miracle" possibly referring to the miracle of childbirth.
- She reincarnated into Arle after death, leaving behind a small part of herself with Phantom God so she could guide her when the time came.
- She is referred to as "Satan's Wife" in one point in the timeline. It is unclear if they actually got married, but most likely this is simply an insulting nickname that arose from their interactions as enemies, as the word "whore" is included in parenthesis immediately after the word "wife".
- Though it is common consensus that she created her "miracle" using the Seraphim Orb's powers, this has never actually been confirmed.
- Her Flame Tornado and Dark Blizzard spells returned in Madou Monogatari I (Genesis), each used by Camus and Satan, respectively.
- Due to the lack of available information about the series in English, there is a common misconception in the west that Doppelganger Arle and Lilith are the same character.
