The Lin Kuei Grandmaster is one of the overarching antagonists of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise. While the original leader of the Lin Kuei clan, he is a ruthless and corrupt figure, who eventually begins the Cyber Initiative to make his clan stronger. He makes his first physical appearance in the prequel Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.
In Mythologies he was portrayed by Michael Garvey, and voiced in Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms by Paul Nakauchi.
History[]
Original Timeline[]
The Lin Kuei Grandmaster was the leader of the Lin Kuei Clan of warriors. He was responsible for assigning missions to the clan's members. He assigned the clan's greatest assassin, Sub-Zero, the mission of recovering the Map of Elements. The Grandmaster made a deal with the sorcerer Quan Chi. In exchange for the Map of Elements, Quan Chi annihilated the Shirai Ryu Clan who were rivals of the Lin Kuei. The Shirai Ryu's leader, Scorpion, was also killed. The Grandmaster then sent Sub-Zero to recover the amulet of Shinnok. In the end, the amulet was taken away by Quan Chi.
After the unsuccessful mission regarding Shinnok's amulet, Sub-Zero was invited to take part in the Mortal Kombat tournament. The Grandmaster sent Sub-Zero with the secret objective to assassinate Shang Tsung.
After Mortal Kombat took place in Outworld, the Grandmaster decreed that the Lin Kuei should be automated into cyborgs. He saw this as an opportunity to improve the efficiency of the clan. Everyone, except for the Grandmaster and Sub-Zero's younger brother became cyborgs who were immune to human emotions. Sub-Zero's younger brother, Kuai Liang, managed to escape.
At some point prior to the events of Deadly Alliance, the Grandmaster was assassinated by Sektor. As the replacement, Sektor became the Lin Kuei's new Grandmaster. Sektor's victory was short lived. He was approached by Kuai Liang. The warriors engaged in battle for the title of Grandmaster. Kuai Liang won and took over the role as Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei. As the new Grandmaster, Kuai Liang vowed to turn the Lin Kuei Clan into a force of good.
Second Timeline[]
In the rebooted timeline, the Grandmaster is mentioned as the founder of the Cyber Initiative, which some of the Lin Kuei, such as Cyrax, Smoke and Kuai Liang spoke against. In the end, while the Cyber Initiative was successful, he was betrayed by his own son, the now Cyberized Sektor, who killed him to take command of the clan.
In a flashback, the original Grandmaster made a deal with Quan Chi to exterminate the Shirai Ryu Clan. As payment for Quan Chi's services, the Elder Sub-Zero retrieved Shinnok's amulet and gave it Quan Chi. However, Quan Chi revived Scorpion as a revenant. After learning the truth, Kuai Liang told Scorpion and the two clans finally made peace with each other.
New Era[]
In the New Era, Sektor's father, named Longwei, never becomes the Lin Kuei Grandmaster, with the title belonging to Sub-Zero's family, but he is mentioned in Sektor's bio as the clan's Master Armourer. His daughter was fascinated at her father's work, and served as his apprentice. Sektor would go onto surpass his skills with technology, and took over the position after he retired.
Movies and Series[]
The Lin Kuei Grandmaster appeared in the 1998-99 Mortal Kombat: Conquest series as the main antagonist of the episode ''Cold Reality'' and a major antagonist in the episode ''The Serpent and the Ice''.
The Lin Kuei Grandmaster also appeared in the 2021 animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms as a major antagonist. He ordered the Cyber Initiative on all the clan, but Kuai Liang, Sub-Zero, escaped. He and his clan were hired by Shinnok to retrieve the final piece of the Kamidogu for the latter’s intent of bringing back One Being to destroy all realms. He realized in horror of Shinnok’s plan and was killed by the Netherrealm demons.
