Villain Overview

Way to take responsibility for your f**k up. I mean why stop blaming Choi. How about blame the academy for apparently failing to teach you how to draw your f***ing weapon. Or we could blame your PTSD as a result of your wife leaving you to blow half the Lions practice squad.
~ Watts' infamous ranting to Coffee after failing to arrest Orlando Johnson properly

~ Watts to Kareem after almost shooting him before being tackled by Coffee

Det. Linda Elizabeth Watts is the main antagonist of Coffee & Kareem. Det. Watts is a police detective who was respected and treated well by her peers but later turned out to be corrupt and ruthlessly sadistic to the core.

Det. Watts was portrayed by actress Betty Gilpin

Background[]

Linda Watts was introduced as a lead detective for the Detroit Metro Police Department, and she was first shown leading an attempted capture of rapper-turned-drug dealer Orlando Johnson, which went awry when Orlando escaped. Linda put all of the blame on officer James Coffee (one of the film's main protagonists) during their meeting with Captain Walter Hill, who also saw Linda hurl various insults at Coffee, and Coffee ended up being demoted to traffic duty. Coffee later ends up having to save 12-year-old Kareem Manning (the other main protagonist, and the son of Coffee's girlfriend, Vanessa Manning), after he stumbles upon Orlando and his partners, Rodney and D, holding Steve Choi, another officer, hostage and at gunpoint.

Linda is phoned by Coffee, who ended up being accused of not only Choi's murder, but Kareem's abduction as well, leading to the pair teaming together (despite Kareem disapproving of Coffee dating his mother) to infiltrate a drug lab apparently being run by Orlando. After the pair subdue and tie up Orlando, Coffee discovered that Orlando had possession of Kareem's phone when he hears it ringing, and it was on the phone that Choi's murder was shown on video, which cleared not only Coffee, but Orlando as well. As Coffee is about to delete the video, Orlando reveals the identity of the true mastermind, Linda Watts.

As Orlando revealed, Linda made a deal with him after his arrest, as he gave info on his other dealers, leading to Linda arresting them, while also arranging her own deal. Regarding Choi, Linda had him burn a batch of fake drugs and took the real ones for Linda to sell, and it was indicated that Linda killed Choi herself to tie up loose ends. Coffee called Captain Hill regarding Linda's heel turn and corruption, and arranged a meeting at a strip club. However, Coffee and Kareem were shocked to see Linda arrive with Hill, who later pulled out his own gun and revealed himself as one of Linda's allies.

Linda later shot Hill to death, and later revealed her plan to kill both Coffee and Kareem and make it appear that the former was shot in self-defense after killing the latter. In addition, the evil Linda revealed that she sent D and Rodney to take care of Vanessa, after which Coffee subdued the corrupt cop with a sock full of loose change. After Kareem escaped, Linda held Coffee at gunpoint and threatened to kill him if Kareem didn't appear, only for Kareem to run down Linda in Coffee's squad car, leading to a high-speed chase. Coffee and Kareem managed to get away and reunite with Vanessa, who revealed that she beat down and tied up the pair of henchmen.

As for Linda, the film's climax saw her preparing to sell a huge shipment of drugs to dealers from Quebec, and after Vanessa and Kareem were taken, Coffee phoned Linda for an exchange, his life for theirs. Coffee appeared at the site armed with grenades, tossing one of them at their direction after D shot him, with the blast killing D. Linda, only concerned with the blast damaging some of the drugs, sent Rodney and Orlando after the trio, though the latter refused to go through with actually killing them, as he revealed that he originally had no plans to get involved in such criminal activity.

Meanwhile, Linda, after many negotiations, completed a successful sale, only for the rest of the police to arrive, leading to both sides pointing guns at each other. Coffee, Vanessa, Kareem, and Orlando escape during the shootout, while Linda killed one of the dealers in order to obtain a briefcase full of money from the deal. Upon encountering Coffee, the villainess feigned despair and claimed that she was in over her head, only to reveal that she was luring Coffee in a false sense of security, leading to a brawl between the pair. All the while, the steel mill ended up exploding due to gasoline being spilled and one of the French-Canadian dealers activating a grenade.

Despite the explosion, Linda survived and head-butted an officer before taking his gun with intent on killing Coffee. But then Vanessa took Coffee's gun and fired several shots at Linda, killing her instantly.

Personality[]

Linda Watts is characterized as being a serious, determined, and sarcastic police detective who leads most investigations for the Detroit Metro Police Department. She often makes sarcastic remarks about fellow Officer James Coffee and his ex-wife who supposedly had sex with The Lions practice squad. She does not apologise for her rude remarks towards Coffee nor does feel any remorse for crossing the line because of his inability to detain Orlando Johnson properly and feels that her reputation is at stake.

However, an evil side reveals that she is a corrupt, ruthless, and sadistic drug lord who was the mastermind behind every incident that happened during the movie's runtime. It was revealed that she commanded Orlando, Rodney, and D to kill her fellow partner/police officer Steven "Steve" Choi. Besides her being involved in this whole ordeal, the captain of the Detroit Metro Police Department precinct, Captain Hill, was also the dirty cop working with her before getting shot and killed by Watts to cover her tracks.

She also does not care about the lives of her accomplices like when D was decimated by the grenade that Officer James Coffee accidentally dropped, Watts only cared about the drugs quality being degraded by D's severed body parts and not D himself who was aiding her. This reveals that she only cares about the money and not for the lives of people
