“ | In the Far East, he is the Lion of Night, who fathered the world's first emperor on the Maiden-Made-of-Light and whose wrath nearly ended the world. | „ |
~ Jaqen H'ghar on the Lion of Night. |
The Lion of Night is an anthropomorphic lion-like deity in the ASOIAF novel series. He is worshipped in Yi Ti, Asshai, and Braavos.
Beliefs[]
According to the priestly tribes of the great port city of Yin, the Lion of Night impregnated the Maiden-Made-of-Light, a goddess also worshipped in Yi Ti, who would give birth to a son, the God-on-Earth, who would rule over the legendary Great Empire of the Dawn for ten thousand years before ascending to the heavens. He was succeeded by his descendants, though each of their reigns became shorter than the previous one until the Bloodstone Emperor usurped power from his sister, the Amethyst Empress.
During his tyrannical rule, he ushered in the Long Night, as the Maiden-Made-of-Light, horrified by the Bloodstone Emperor's vile atrocities, turned her back on the world, and the Lion of Night, in his wrath, came down from the heavens to punish the wickedness of mankind.
Some claimed that Five Forts that predate the Golden Empire of Yi Ti were raised by the Pearl Emperor from the Great Empire of the Dawn to keep away the Lion of Night and his demons from the realms of men. In Asshai, some worshippers of the Lion of Night can be found.
In Braavos, the assassin guild known as the Faceless Men believe that the Lion of Night is one of the many incarnations of their deity, the Many-Faced God, alongside the Black Goat of Qohor, the Moon Mother, the Stranger of the Faith of the Seven, and others. In the House of Black and White, the home and headquarters of the Faceless Men, there is an ebony statue of the Lion of Night alongside the statues of other different gods that represent death. Whenever worshippers come to visit, those who worship the Lion of Night place candles at his statue. The latter's shrines are commonly visited by wealthy men.
