Lionel St. Swithens, better known as The Shame Wizard, is a supporting antagonist in the Netflix animated series Big Mouth. He serves as the main antagonist of the second season and is a supporting character in later seasons. He is the mortal enemy of the Hormone Monster who inflames kids’ deepest shame.
He is voiced by David Thewlis, who also played King Einon in Dragonheart and Ares in Wonder Woman.
Appearance[]
He appears as a scary and sinister humanoid entity in a dark large robe, with heterochromia (the left eye is red and the right eye blue). He is tall and skinny with the ability to float in the air.
Personality[]
While the Shame Wizard can be hard on kids, he is also pretty sociable and ultimately wants to make sure teenagers don't turn into sex pests.
Biography[]
The Shame Wizard comes from the same supernatural realm as the Hormone Monsters and just like them, guides teens through puberty. The difference being that the Shame Wizard makes teens feel guilty over random things.
The Shame Wizard first appeared when Andrew masturbated over a swimsuit his best friend's sister left in the bathroom, only to get caught by said sister. He reveals himself to Andrew and has him convicted not just for this one indiscretion, but for every single time he'd ever masturbated.
The Shame Wizard stays on the sidelines for awhile, until the entire 8th grade has a sleepover in the gym. He then preys on all the kid's insecurities, turning them against each other and leaving them to wallow in self-loathing. His scheme was all but triumphant until he was distracted by the school's dim-witted coach. The kids then regained their confidence and banished him through sheer willpower.
The Shame Wizard is later revealed to still exist, but has been humbled to the point where he is no longer considered an enemy.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Just like the Hormone Monsters, the Shame Wizard can only be seen by whoever he wants to see him.
- Again like the Hormone Monsters, the Shame Wizard can manifest wherever he wants through smoke and shadows.
- He can duplicate himself.
