Villain Overview

We're losing our place in a world that no longer needs us. A world that now spurns our very existence. You should know that as well as I do. After I launch this weapon and get our billion dollars, we'll be able to bring chaos and honor back to this world gone soft.
~ Liquid Snake
Love!? It's hate!! He always told me I was inferior and now I'll have my revenge!! You should understand me, brother. You killed our father with your own hands! You stole my chance for revenge! Now I'll finish the work that Father began. I will surpass him... I will destroy him!
~ Liquid Snake to Solid Snake.

Liquid Snake is the main antagonist of the 1998 stealth video game Metal Gear Solid and its 2004 GameCube remake Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and a supporting antagonist in the 2015 prequel Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. He is a clone of Big Boss created alongside Solid Snake.

In English, he was voiced by Cam Clarke (who also voiced Dr. Mobius in Fallout: New Vegas) in Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2, and by Piers Stubbs in The Phantom Pain. In Japanese, he was voiced by Banjō Ginga in Metal Gear Solid and by Yūtarō Honjō in The Phantom Pain.

Other Media[]

Super Smash Bros.[]

Liquid Snake appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a sticker that increases any character's amount of health restored when eating food. He also appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a legendary grab type spirit, with his spirit battle being against Snake on Shadow Moses Island with increased physical power and the stage covered in a poisonous cloud.

Personality[]

Well I'm not like you. Unlike you, I'm proud of the destiny that is encoded into my very genes.
~ Liquid Snake.

Liquid Snake was best described as an uncompromising, obnoxious, vengeful, arrogant, and extroverted person with a lack of compassion and loyalty to his allies, only seeing them as expendable pawns at best. This contrasted his brother Solid Snake who was calm, collected, and much kinder and loyal to his friends in spite of his bonds with them repeatedly being put to the test. He was incredibly resentful and bitter towards Big Boss, believing he had been knowingly chosen by the man to be his "inferior" clone, whereas his brother Solid Snake was endowed with "superior" genes. His resentments were so immense that it overpowered both Skull Face and Volgin's control over Tretij Rebenok aka. Psycho Mantis (both of whom did so due to their mutual hatred of Big Boss) where it rendered Skull Face extremely incredulous to the point of losing his composure. Liquid can react violently at the mere mention of the subject of fathers or parents, and even attacked Venom Snake for simply attempting to be friendly towards him. In addition, he bore hatred towards the Patriots as he had hunted them down for some time, and vowed to deal with them in such a gruesome and unpleasant manner enough to "cause even the reaper's stomach to turn." Despite his nature, Liquid was shown to be merciful and possess some skewed sense of pride and honor by letting Snake live to fight him unbound and unarmed in a one-on-one duel as well as sparing Meryl when Ocelot offered to kill her. Owing to his arrogance however, he did so partly so he could use her as a pawn against Snake. He was also shown to be manipulative, using the power of persuasion to get what he wanted. He even imitated others, but had trouble maintaining the disguise when excited.

Even as a child, he already possessed psychopathic behavior stemmed from learning about his heritage, which was exacerbated by his handlers' mistreatments of him prior to his escape in Africa. This even disturbed Miller who described him as having an "attitude problem". He despised adult authority and hated being treated as a kid, as when Venom Snake patted him on the back in a friendly manner, Liquid almost immediately tried to kill him by taking his knife, only to have his right arm dislocated, which Snake immediately put back after lecturing him about respect and loyalty. He was also shown to have a lot of self-loathing to the extent of being suicidal in his younger years, as evidenced by his comment about freeing himself from his cursed heritage when about to fight Venom Snake, his lamentation about his fate being written into his genes, as well as his deeply considering suicide until he was convinced otherwise. He ultimately decided to prove himself superior, breaking free from what his genes had determined and was even more than happy to tarnish Big Boss' name. He also largely believed for the same reasons that he couldn't become anything other than a soldier, and wouldn't have the right to even possess a real name, reacting angrily at one point when Snake claimed that he did have a name other than his codename. His loathing of his real name had been there since his youth, as he reacted violently when one of his fellow soldiers addressed him as such. Ironically, his brother Snake managed to prove what he wanted to prove and never realized that he already had superior genes all along until his demise.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

That's right. Until the very end, Liquid thought he was the inferior one.
~ Revolver Ocelot to Solidus Snake revealing Liquid was the genetically superior clone all along
  • Cloned Physiology: Liquid is a highly advanced soldier due to his genetic engineering. As result of his genetic engineering where he was endowed with Big Boss' superior soldier genes, he possesses higher endurance, enhanced strength, speed, durability, recovery rate and a genius-level intellect.
    • Enhanced Strength: Even as a child, Liquid could overpower fully grown adults such as Venom Snake. As an adult, Liquid could casually carry an unconscious Soild Snake up Metal Gear REX and even rip off his clone brother's restraints with no effort. During his final fight with Solid Snake, his punches were powerful enough to cause shockwaves. His kip up was powerful enough to kick Solid Snake off his feet.
    • Enhanced Durability: By the events of Metal Gear Solid, Liquid demonstrates that he is able to survive numerous events that would kill most others, which is best displayed throughout the fights against Solid Snake where the only thing that can kill him is the FOXDIE virus Naomi injected into Snake's system.
    • Enhanced Speed: As a child Liquid was able to outrun adult soldiers such as Venom Snake. During his final fight with Solid Snake he could perform a shoulder charge at fast dashing speeds.
    • Enhanced Agility: Liquid is able to perform acrobatic feats of agility most people would be incapable of performing, even on the edge of a cat walk railing. Could even leap across large gaps from quite a distance, even going over Solid Snake's head.
    • Enhanced Reflexes: Liquid's reflexes are great enough that he can dodge gunfire from point blank range, even while driving a jeep. He could even tag and eventually pin the superhumanly quick and nimble Gray Fox when piloting Metal Gear REX.

Abilities[]

Solid Snake: Why did you disguise yourself as Master?
Liquid Snake So I could manipulate you more easily. And you performed quite well, I must say.
~ Liquid revealing his deceptive plan to Solid Snake
  • Genius-Level Intellect: He possesses an IQ of 180. Due to his superior intelligence, Liquid became the squad commander of FOXHOUND, spoke seven languages (including English, Spanish, French, Malay, Arabic and Kikongo). His intellect, along with his charisma, enable him to persuade and manipulate others to get what he wants.
    • Impersonation: His advanced intellect and charisma also enable him to assume the disguise of Miller near-flawlessly as long as he isn't undergoing intense emotions.
  • Special Forces Training: He became the youngest member of the Special Air Service, excelling at parachuting, rappelling, scuba diving, free climbing, and use in small arms and military vehicles.
Have at you, Snake!
~ Liquid to Solid Snake.
  • Master Combatant: Due to his superior genetics, he was better than the average soldier, easily disarming and pinning one to the ground. Even as a child, he could hold his own against body-double of Big Boss, Venom Snake, in hand to hand combat, dodging and countering his CQC attacks and even evading his gunfire while pinning him to a metal wall with a plastic chair. As he got older, his fighting and physical prowess had strengthened even more and he was able to fight his twin, Solid Snake on near equal footing. His fighting style seems to be comprised of Boxing, Wrestling, Taekwondo, Karate, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, Jujitsu, and Judo.
  • Knife Proficiency: As child, Liquid showed skill in using blades in combat. During his flight with Venom Snake he was able to use a machete against him and when he pinned him with a chair, almost stabbed him with his folding knife. He was also able to take a knife of a Dimond dog soldier and eventually overpower him at knife point.
  • Expert Marksman: Due to his military background, Liquid was experienced with accurately using small firearms. He could fire a FAMAS assault rifle in one hand while driving his jeep at the same time. This also applies to using projectile weapons in vehicles such as hitting two jets despite being in a blizzard and was even able to use Metal Gear REX's laser to server the arm of Gray Fox despite the latter's enhanced speed, agility, and reflexes.
I'm going to swat down a couple of bothersome flies.
~ Liquid to a Genome soldier about engaging the F-16's
  • Vehicular Expertise: Liquid was also an especially adept pilot; as demonstrated by his piloting of a Hind D during a blizzard when the gunship's IR and navigation systems were non-functional and in combat against two F-16s, as well as co-pilot it from within the weapons operator's cockpit, which Revolver Ocelot attributed to the successes of the "Les Enfant Terribles" project. He would later use the same chopper to combat Snake. When piloting Metal Gear REX, Liquid was able to keep fighting even when the raydome was damaged and was forced to open the cockpit.
Not yet, Snake! It's not over yet!
~ Liquid to Solid Snake
  • Indomitable Will/High Pain Tolerance/Durability: Liquid was known for being a determined and resilient individual who could survive near impossible odds of his pure hatred towards his father and his clone brother. He was able to keep going even after surviving a chopper crash, a point blank explosion in the cockpit of REX and a car accident, all within the span of less than 24 hours.

Equipment[]

  • FAMAS Assault rifle: Liquid used this assault rifle commonly used by the Genome soldiers when attempting to kill Snake and Meryl while they tried to escape the base. This model came equipped with a laser sight module.
  • Nuclear Module: Liquid set down a nuclear module next to Meryl that was timed to detonate at her "death" during his final fight with Solid Snake.
  • Hind D: Liquid used this helicopter to take on two F-16's and during two attempts to kill Solid Snake. It was eventually destroyed by Solid Snake with rocket launcher.
  • Metal Gear REX: Liquid was able to pilot Metal Gear Rex after tricking Solid Snake into activating it. The bipedal mech came equipped with vulcan guns, rockets, a laser beam, and a rail cannon that could shoot nuclear warheads invisible to radars.
  • Jeep: Liquid commandeered a jeep from the hangar to purse Solid Snake and Meryl. He eventually crashed it at the end of the chase out of Shadow Moses.

Notable Victims[]

  • Gray Fox - Squashed with Metal Gear REX.

Trivia[]

  • Liquid speaks with a British accent due to him growing up in the UK and has some Japanese heritage from the egg donor in the Les Enfants Terribles.
  • According to the cardboard box trophy in Super Smash Bros Brawl, Liquid, like Solid Snake and Big Boss, is fond of cardboard boxes.
  • In the original script for Metal Gear Solid 2, Liquid was to have faked his death from FOXDIE and to be the main villain of at least the tanker chapter, but this was scrapped.
    • This concept was later arguably recycled by having Ocelot create his Liquid persona to become the latter's mental doppelganger with the use of Liquid's arm grafted in place of his original one that was previously cut off by Gray Fox coupled with hypnosis and psychotherapy, drugs, and nanomachines all as means of lowering the Patriots' guard. However, Ocelot later forced to replace the arm with prosthetic one because of mental imbalance in the form of Liquid persona's tendency to take over whenever Snake was around even in less-appropriate times, potentially putting his plan against the Patriots at risk.
  • In Metal Gear Solid 4, a ghost of Liquid appears in the cockpit of REX's remains if a photo is taken of it.
