Liz Topham-Myrtle

Liz Topham-Myrtle is a fictional character and the titular antagonist in the 2023 film Hemet, or the Landlady Don’t Drink Tea. She is a landlady of an apartment building in Hemet, California. The character was created by screenwriter and actor Brian Patrick Butler, who portrays the character in drag makeup. Butler’s portrayal was well received by film critics, commending his chemistry with co-star Kimberly Weinberger. The character was compared to other iconic personalities.

Biography[]

Liz is an elderly, straight, and conservative white woman. She is a smoker and landlady who's focused on ruling the tenants of her apartment complex with an iron fist. Liz threatens them with eviction and revoked parking spaces without reason, other than being randomly cruel. She has the law enforcement under her wing, leaving no limits to her wrath.

Reception[]

1428 Elm said the character "wants to maintain control, and she thwarts, or murders tenants who threaten her power."[1] Film Blitz said "When she’s on screen, it’s hypnotic,” and “It’s difficult for the rest of the characters to stand against the tsunami-like force which is Liz.”[2] Film Threat compared the character to Leatherface, describing the character as “vile, homicidal, racist, and strangely sexually active,” and “with the US economy in the toilet and bath salt, flesh-eating homeless running streets, Liz knows full well she can charge whatever she wants and treat her tenants any way she pleases.”[3]

Film Authority said she looks like Madea and is a “disgusting, vile character horrible to look at, even worse for the way she treats the tenants.”[4] Projected Figures described her as “curmudgeonly old Liz Topham-Myrtle is very much the queen of her domain, passing judgment on all and sundry while herself embodying immorality of the most unconscionable variety.”[5] Others say she is like Divine or Dawn Davenport from the films of John Waters.
