Vermin, that's what you are. I was just offering my observation, Parasites have gotten a bad rap ,when in fact, they're a necessary part of the animal ecosystem. Vermin should be wiped out.
~ Curt Connors threatening his soon to be victim.

Curtis "Curt" Connors, better known as The Lizard, is an supporting antagonist in Spider-Man: The New Animated Series. Prior to becoming a college professor at Empire State University he lost his right arm in an industrial accident conducted by Oscorp. Holding a grudge ever since he researched reptilian biology and injected himself with a formula that transformed him into the Lizard.

He was voiced by heavy metal musician/film director Rob Zombie, who also voiced Ichthultu

Personality[]

Prior to becoming the Lizard, Dr. Curtis Conners was a no nonsense and somewhat callous instructor at Empire State University, with his interactions with Peter Parker suggesting he looks down on students who would rather party on and off campus instead of studying. However he appeared to respect Peter enough to have him in his research on reptilian DNA before having him leave early to test the research on himself. Connors is also fearless in the face of injustice as he insulted an armed mugger while held at gunpoint and compared him to "vermin", even defending Spider-Man after after he saved his life from the same mugger.

However, underneath these altruistic traits lies a deeply resentful and insidious nature that worsens once Connors transforms into the lizard, as upon becoming the Lizard for the first time he managed to track down and violently murder the mugger that had assaulted him the day prior. When speaking to Peter one last time, he reveals that Oscorp industries was responsible for costing him his right arm during a demonstration of an explosive device, with Norman Osborn covering up the company's involvement in the courts. Even after Norman's death, Connors decided to enhance his Lizard transformation and kill the former CEO's son, in this state he lost the ability to speak but could comprehend words as he reacted to Spider-Man's words on his regenerated limb.

Biography[]

Past[]

Over ten years prior, Dr. Curtis Connors was renowned for his reptilian studies in the swamp's of Georgia. On one occasion government tractors associated with Oscorp conducted tests on the area with an explosive device unaware of Connors presence until their explosion took off his right arm during the testing. While Connors filed a lawsuit on Oscorp, someone (implied to be the CEO Norman Osborn) pulled strings to throw out the case over the course of a decade leaving Connors bitter and resentful even after his eventual death. Ever since Connors has continued his research at Empire State University with his conversations with the student Peter Parker indicating he had the young man help him run some of the tests.

Law of the Jungle[]

At night Connors continued his research on rewriting the textbook on cell regeneration with Peter Parker, briefly scolding him after he was dozing off outside. After shunning the frivolities of today's youth he then asks Peter to incrementalize the enzyme reagent and give the readings for the cells stabilization. Satisfied with the results Connors asks Peter to head home early while looking at the results, once Peter leaves Connors immediately shuts the door and picks up a syringe with the Reptilian formula proceeding to inject himself with it as his arm regrows.

After bandaging the arm and walking home, a police officer makes small talk with Connors before he is assaulted by an armed mugger. Connors approaches the mugger and compares him to vermin that must be wiped out before he is shoved to the ground with a shotgun, before the mugger can do anything further he is scared off by Spider-Man who eventually captures him. Connors reports the incident to the police and attempts to defend Spider-Man when the officer tries implicating him as part of the crime, though he is brushed off. Peter Parker approaches Connors to discuss the lab results but he heads home before giving a menacing glare to the captured mugger.

The next day, Connors decides to get revenge and injects himself with the Reptilian formula, this time fully transforming him into the Lizard. The Lizard manages to track down the mugger at an NYPD precinct and proceeds to brutally murder him. Peter witness the attack and changes to on his Spider-Man costume to stop the Lizard from fleeing. The Lizard attacks Spider-Man and swiftly escapes the scene leaving behind part of his lab coat as evidence. In the morning still stuck in his Lizard transformation Connors cancels class for the day and covers himself in a hood, causing Peter to go investigate at his office. Connors tries to get him to leave but after hearing of his concerns explains a part of the full story around how government contractors related to Oscorp cost him his right arm and threw out his lawsuit case after a decade, before once again asking Peter to leave him be.

Later that night looking at his case dismissal papers Connors grows furious and decides to enact vengeance on the company, using the reptilian formula again strengthen his Lizard transformation. As the Lizard scales Oscorps building, he sees Harry Osborn and conflates him with his late father Norman. Breaking in, he decides to kill Harry and gives chase healing some of the fingers the young man chopped off with a nearby axe, after knocking it away the Lizard is stopped by Spider-Man and turns his attacks onto him.

The Lizard then lunges at Spider-Man sending them falling out of a window, but manages to catch himself and rescales the building's roof. The Lizard ignores Spider-Mans attempts to talk him down and continues fighting him, briefly reacting to a comment about his right arm before lunging at Spider-Man. Spider-Man proceeds to web tie the Lizard to an exhaust fan, though the two notice a NYPD helicopter signaling them, the Lizard breaks free and grabs Spider-Man by the neck and attempts to shove him into the rotating fan. Spider-Man manages to web himself to the helicopter causing the Lizard to inadvertently lose his right arm, and is then grabbed by the tail through Spider-Mans web.

As the helicopter gains altitude Spider-Man makes one final attempt at reasoning with Connors and to cease struggling or else he could fall, but the Lizard does not take these words into account and attacks forcing Spider-Man into letting go of the web holding him. The Lizard is then sent falling to ground below letting out a single tear (possibly showing remorse for his action after coming to his senses during his final moments) before succumbing to his injuries and dies.

Powers and Abilities[]

After transforming into the Lizard Curt Connors gains all the characteristics and Physiology of the reptile including enhanced strength and speed, agility, stamina, and senses being able to contend with and fight with Spider-Man on even levels. Among that he is granted razor sharp claws and teeth allowing to scale building and environments at an alarming speed and tear into his victims. He is also gains a reptile healing factor that replaces his arms and fingers but it is notably slower at restoring his arm a second time.

Trivia[]

  • The Lizard is one of the few villains in the show who was taken from the Spider-Man comics, as most of the villains in Spider-Man: The New Animated Series were original.
  • Despite never seeing or interacting with him in the show, Mary Jane Watson has a psychic induced nightmare of the Lizard in the 13th episode "Mind Games part 2".
