Curtis "Curt" Connors, also known as The Lizard, is major character in TV animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man. He served as the main antagonist of the Biology arc in season 1.

He was voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. who also voiced his counterpart in Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, Toiletnator in Codename: Kids Next Door, Bubble Bass in SpongeBob SquarePants series, Ra's al Ghul in Batman Arkhamverse series, Admiral Trench in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Evil Julian in Randy Cunningham 9th grade ninja, Admiral Konstantine in Star Wars: Rebels, Crosshair in Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Klaus Heissler in American Dad!, David Nababirdy in The Casagrandes, Cinderblock and Plasmus in Teen Titans, the Brain and Clock King in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Ra's al Ghul in the Arkhamverse franchise, Daffy Duck and Wile E. Biography[]

He was a combat medic in the United States Army until an undisclosed incident caused him to lose his right arm, replacing it with a mechanical prosthetic. After recuperating he and his wife Martha went to work at Empire State University where they employed Eddie Brock as a lab assistant and Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy as interns.

Connors funneled research into developing a lizard-based formula that would allow him to reclaim his missing arm. Though successful the serum slowly starts to alter Connors' DNA structure, which caused his body and mind to mutate into a humanoid reptile known as The Lizard. Spider-Man, Martha, Gwen, and Eddie develop a formula to cure him, which Spider-Man administers after a grueling battle at the zoo, restoring Curt to his human form. During the fight however, Spider-Man takes a picture of the Lizard that is later sold to the Daily Bugle.

After Martha sees the picture in a newspaper, she feels Peter cannot be trusted and ends his internship. Later, the Connors are given an alien symbiote to analyze, but it attaches itself to Spider-Man when Black Cat attempted to steal it. With the funds for their research pulled due to its loss, the Connors reluctantly fire Brock, as they can no longer afford to have him on their payroll.

The Connors receive Miles Warren as support and a grant from Norman Osborn. After Eddie steals a vial of Curt's gene cleanser, control of the Connors' lab falls into Warren's hands. When Curt discovers Warren's amoral genetic research, he threatens to tell the school board. However, Warren retaliates by threatening to inform them of Curt's own experiments and transformation into the Lizard. Following this, the Connors move to Florida to prevent Curt's secret from being exposed.

Personality[]

As a scientist, Connors is very kind and benevolent wanting to make the world a better place through science for the public. This is what prompted him to create a serum to regenerate limbs in the first place. Not only does he want to regrow his own arm, but he also believes that such a formula could change the world and help millions of other people as well.

As the Lizard, he is reduced to a bloodthirsty feral monster who acts on predatory instinct on anyone that crosses his path even his friends and family.

Trivia[]

In the comics and other animated incarnations, Connors' Lizard persona still had his intelligence even after he was mutated whereas this version of the Lizard is a completely mindless, feral animal who doesn't even speak.
This version of Curt is responsible for the creation of the spider that bit Peter and by extension, his superpowers. In the comics, the spider was enhanced by radiation in a lab demonstration completely unrelated to Connors.
His experiments with genetically-enhanced electric eels also give him a role in the creation of Electro in this continuity, rather than Max gaining his powers in a random power line accident. Furthermore, his transformation into the Lizard is a direct result of the serum being electrified by an angry Max.
His transformation back into the Lizard is teased in Season 2 and it is very possible he would've made a reappearance in future seasons or specials. However, the series was canceled before production could begin. Thus, this makes the Lizard the least recurring antagonist in the entire series.
It's never outright confirmed, but Curt and Martha both seem to have accidentally figured out Peter's secret in "Identity Crisis". They initially laugh off the idea of Peter being Spider-Man but then seem to have an epiphany as they put the pieces together. However, if they did figure it out, they never told anyone, not even Peter himself.
