Philomela, I will no longer tolerate you wasting the chances that I give you. I have no home to provide a failure like you. If what you gain is something as silly as friendship, I will have to think of a way to deal with you. Otherwise, do what you are told. Carry out your role. If you wish to see your father and mother, you shouldn't have the time to whine.
~ Lizbeth, sending the message to her granddaughter via her familiar, Alcyone.

Lizbeth Sargant (リズベス・サーガント) is the main antagonist of season 2 in the anime/manga series The Ancient Magus' Bride. She is a cruel sorcerer and grandmother of Philomela Sargant who only sees her as a tool.

She is voiced by Sayuri Sadaoka in Japanese while her English voice actor is currently unknown, and as a young adult, she is voiced by Katelyn Barr (who also voiced Ren Sohma in Fruits Basket).

Appearance[]

She is an elderly woman with short white hair and a pair of round sunglasses on. Behind her sunglasses, her eyes are completely, exotically black. She also wears a black robe.

Personality[]

Did you hear me give you permission to raise your head? You greedy child. If you insisted on angering me with your incompetence, then anger you will receive.
~ Lizbeth to her granddaughter.

Lizbeth is a very cruel and strict woman, especially to her granddaughter, Philomela. No matter what she does, she pretty much never treats her well or openly compliments her and is always emotionally abusing her by telling her how worthless she thinks she is, which is something she has been shown to do even when Philomela was a young girl in flashbacks, and is no doubt the main reason for her lack of self-esteem. She even abuses her physically sometimes, a good example being during her first onscreen appearance when she slapped her in the face simply for lifting her head while bowing down without asking for permission to do so. She only compliments her granddaughter when she fulfilled her role in retrieving the Book of Testament. She is proven to be arrogant as she cannot bear to be seen as a failure by her peers.

However, her cruelty is far from restricted to her granddaughter. She is also revealed to have kidnapped the puppies/babies of a werewolf couple to blackmail them into doing whatever she demands them to do. She is also revealed to be the true mastermind behind the infamous, bloody massacre of the Webster family since it was eventually revealed that the werewolves were the culprits, as well as that they did it so they would get their children back, all so she could use their spiders for her own devices. Nonetheless, her responsibility for it and her lack of remorse demonstrate that she has no reservations with hurting or outright killing innocent people to get what she wants. This lack of empathy is again demonstrated when the female werewolf survives an encounter from the guardian hounds, which left her badly wounded and her husband dead, and returns to her, tearfully begging to see her children again, only for Lizbeth to casually remark she thought she was dead, have her struck by one of her familiars, then seemingly agree to let her see her kids again, only for it to be revealed a little later that she had her outfitted with some sort of device that allows her to control her more directly. She also does not display any genuine love for her late son as she only views him as an extension of herself.

Biography[]

Background[]

Young Lizbeth

Lizbeth during her youth.

During her youth, she was chosen to be the heir of her family by her father to served under the Rickenbacker family. She was required to have a child in order to follow her footsteps. She married and gave birth a newborn son named Adam. However, her husband died due to severe sickness shortly after Adam's birth. She have a wet nurse take care of her baby son, but as Adam grew older, he began to follow her desperately trying to earn her love and approval.

She has her son Adam torture her prisoners for information, that is until Adam met Iris, one of many of Lizbeth's prisoners, who banged his head, which made Adam realize he is being used a Lizbeth's tool and decided to run away from his terrible mother, along with Iris and started a new life together. That was when Philomela was born. Lizbeth did not take the liking of Adam running away, so she sent the group of assassins and ordered them to take Adam and his baby daughter Philomela back home and kill Iris. Iris told Alcyone to take Philomela and run away. The assassins managed to kill Iris, but Adam committed suicide, stating he would rather die than go back to that hell of the home. The assassins caught up with Alcyone and take Philomela back home where Lizbeth would raise and use her as a pawn.

After capturing Alcyone, Lizbeth reprogrammed her by implanting a curse onto her mind.

Some time ago, she employed a poison-immune alchemist as similar age as Veronica, the daughter of the Rickenbacker family, to accompany her in the College. However, Veronica chose Philomela as her companion, even though Lizbeth is against it since her magic is "immature". Veronica stated it is not a request, but an order. Lizbeth followed her order, albeit irritated.

After capturing the werewolves, she forced them into her bidding and ordered them (and Philomela) to slaughter the entire Webster family and steal a thread spider that can create a copy of Testament of Carnamagos.

Plot[]

She sent out her white raven with a letter to her granddaughter at College to summon her back home. She immediately scolds her for being late and reminds her that she's only in College because of Veronica Rickenbacker's charity.

She is next seen being informed to declare that a pest must be dealt with. She is most likely referring to Lucy Webster, the student at the College who survived the werewolves attack during the Tragedy of the Websters incident (the slaughter of Lucy's family) eight years ago.

Some time later, she went to the College through her white owl along with her Fae named Alcyone. She requested Liza Quillyn, the current headmistress of the College, to withdraw Philomela out from College. Liza refused the request and told Lizbeth that any withdrawal based on family matters is immaterial if the student desires to stay. Liza informed her that the College will be sealed from there on out because of recent incidents surrounding the area. Just then, a barrier was erected, and one of the Cait Sidhes attacks the owl and severs Lizbeth's connection with Alcyone. From her family home, she is unfazed by the situation and claims that she just have more time to work with.

In the female werewolf's flashback, it is revealed that in the snowy wilderness, she has a family of a husband and three children. However, the poachers came into their tent and kidnapped them. They have the parents and the children locked up in the separate cages. It is revealed that Lizbeth was behind their kidnapping. She also blackmailed the two werewolves into working for her.

Despite the College being in lockdown protected by the barrier, Lizbeth is still able to communicate with Philomela via her Fae Alcyone. She cruelly warned her granddaughter that she will not tolerate failure like her. Telling her that if she wants to see her parents again, she should carry out her "role".

Later on, the female werewolf returned failing to assassinate Lucy and Seth. She begged Lizbeth to let her children again. Lizbeth seemingly agree to let her see her kids again, only for it to be revealed a little later that she had her outfitted with some sort of curse that allows her to control her more directly. She then ordered the werewolf to wait and escort Philomela out of the College, which was still in lockdown.

During Christmas Festival in the College, Philomela is revealed to have stolen the Book of Testament (while also becoming corrupted by it) and she escaped the College with the help of the female werewolf. Upon returning back home, she gave the Book of Testament to her grandmother and she asks her if they can finally bring back her late parents. Lizbeth did not respond and orders Alcyone to take Philomela to the underground by sundown and orders the werewolf to be on guard for intruders, while Lizbeth is preparing the ritual to resurrect her son.
