“ | SILENCE OR I’LL KILL YOU ALL! [...] From this day forward you will no longer be the people of your pathetic kingdoms, but the property of this empire. Disrespect me again, and I will not show you the same mercy as your weak kings and fragile queens. Anyone who dares to cross me will not only lose their own lives but will first watch as I take their families’ lives as well! | „ |
~ Lloyd making his speech to his new empire. |
“ | You're learning it the hard way, just like I had to, there is no such thing as love. Families are just strangers who share blood. They claim to love you unconditionally, but in the end, they always betray you the most. My mother taught me that lesson, and now you're learning it from me. | „ |
~ Lloyd's words to Alex during their second confrontation while masquerading as her father. |
“ | UNHAND ME AT ONCE, YOU DEMONS! | „ |
~ Lloyd's last words as he is dragged by the undead into his grave. |
Lloyd Bailey, better known as the Masked Man, is the main antagonist of The Land of Stories series.
He serves as one of the two main antagonists in A Grimm Warning and is the main antagonist in both Beyond the Kingdoms and An Author’s Odyssey.
In A Grimm Warning, he first appears as a prisoner in Pinocchio Prison who makes a deal with Napoleonic era French General Marquis to help him acquire a dragon egg. After betraying Marquis and stealing his army, he makes his return in Beyond the Kingdoms, where he is revealed to be Alex and Conner’s uncle, twin brother of their father. He meets his end in An Author’s Odyssey after being dragged into an open grave by zombies and buried alive in Bree’s short story, turned into a real world via the Portal Potion.
Biography[]
Pre-Land of Stories[]
Lloyd Bailey was born to Brystal Lynn Evergreen (or the Fairy Godmother) and an unknown father. He had an older brother named John. As a child he was an extreme loner who hated the outdoors and imprisoned animals in jars in his room, where he preferred to read Otherworld literature. Eventually as an attempt to make him happy his mother created the Portal Potion so he could travel into his books, which he refused, breaking his mother’s heart. She then went into the Hall of Dreams to see what his ambition was, and found out his goal was to take over the world. As an attempt to stop him from doing this she took him outside, tied him to a tree after lecturing him about squirrels, and took his magic out, and killed it. Angered, Lloyd swore to hate his mother until she died.
Eventually in his adult years he started making deals with Morina and the Snow Queen and eventually he wooed a woman named Bo Peep with love potions from Morina and at one point he impregnated her, However during that time he had left her already to steal the Portal Potion, then, a guilty Bo Peep wrote an anonymous letter warning someone was coming to steal something from the Fairy Godmother, and Lloyd was arrested. He then gained his signature mask because his mother didn’t want anyone to know he was her son. Shortly after she went into labor and gave birth to the child (a boy, later revealed to be Emmerich) at Hagetta’s cottage. In an attempt to hide the boy from his father, Bo Peep asked Hagetta to send the boy into a world where his father can never find him.
At some point in prison, Lloyd heard of his older brother’s death.
A Grimm Warning[]
Lloyd’s first appearance was when General Marquis and the Grande Armee raided Pinocchio Prison and at one point they encounter his cell. First seeing his weak appearance the Grande Armee refused to hire him due to his weak appearance but he persuaded them into taking him on by promising to give the location of a dragon. Eventually he guides them into the Snow Queen’s cave where he makes a deal with her promising to give her the Northern Kingdom if she gave them the Dragon Egg. He then helps raise the dragon and eventually he then takes it to the Fairy Kingdom as the Grande Armee’s secret weapon. Shortly afterwards, he betrays General Marquis and kills him and then he breaks Bo Peep’s heart after he ordered the dragon to kill them all. The dragon soon trampled over some unicorns brought in as a distraction and sent others flying but in the end it is defeated by the Fairy Godmother. The Masked Man then flees with his remaining soldiers.
However when nobody noticed he went back into the Fairy Palace to steal the Portal Potion. He was caught by his niece however and forced to pull off his mask, leading to her mistaking him as her late father.
Beyond the Kingdoms[]
Lloyd enters the story of Beyond the Kingdoms when he appears at the Witches' Brew. Shortly afterward a fight ensues between the main characters and the Third Little Pig and the witches, where Lloyd is able to escape. He then goes on to meet Morina to ask for her fortune-telling (around the same time the twins find out he is their uncle). Moving on he then steals Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to recruit their villains and their troops to help him take over the world in exchange for something they want (Heads for the Queen of Hearts, Peter Pan for Captain Hook, and Dorothy's silver shoes for The Wicked Witch of the West). Later on when his nephew and niece catch up to him, he banishes them along with their group (Alex, Mother Goose, and Lester in the former, Conner, Tin Woodman, and Peter Pan in the latter) into King Arthur and Robin Hood. By the time they get out of their stories, the Masked Man had already taken over the Land of Stories and freed his old army from Pinocchio Prison.
An Author's Odyssey[]
At the start of An Author's Odyssey, Lloyd is now the ruler of the Land of Stories. Declaring himself the Masked Emperor, he rounds up the citizens of the kingdoms and throws them into a dried lake. Shortly afterwards, he orders the royal families of all the kingdoms to be executed. However the execution is thwarted by a rescue party led by Jack and Goldilocks with the Tin Woodman serving as the "executioner". Angered, he orders chase, which fails. With the failure of the execution, he is betrayed by the literary villains who throw him off a balcony seemingly to his death. However he survived and went to the witch camp to pick up Emmerich, who was kidnapped on his orders after he found out he was his son so he could restore his magic. Eventually they make it past the Neuschwanstein Castle portal where he blackmails Bree and the Sisters Grimm into flying back to California so he can have Charlotte transfer Emmerich's blood into his body to restore his magic, effectively killing him. However they travel using an ambulance into Bree's story "Cemetery of the Undead" to do so. However during the blood transfusion Charlotte puts sedative instead of saline. He tries to shoot him, but fails and shoots himself instead. Angered, he walks to the Wronged Women Row of the cemetery and was about to kill Conner before the ghosts (Joan of Arc, Anne Boleyn, Marie-Antoinette, and Bo Peep) rise up. Seeing Bo Peep, he became shocked and angered at her appearance and tries to shoot her. However after his attempted at shooting her in vain, he falls into an empty grave and his dragged down by ghostly hands, killing him.
Shortly after his death, the headstone suddenly had the words "Here lies Lloyd Bailey, beloved by none" etched on it.
Legacy[]
Worlds Collide[]
Lloyd's attempt on his son's life left an impact so large Emmerich and his adoptive mother that they decided to move to Australia to get away from the fairytale world.
Personality[]
“ | He was the youngest son in a very powerful family—but he longed to be more powerful than them all. He tried everything he possibly could to gain the control he desired; he lied and stole, he made promises he couldn’t keep, and bargains he couldn’t afford. He’s the most conniving type of man there is. | „ |
~ Hagetta on Lloyd’s obsession with power and the various unreasonable methods he tried to get it |
Lloyd Bailey’s entire personality is based on the desire to obtain power, and he is willing to do anything to get that power. In his childhood, he had dreamed of taking over the world and killing his mother. He is willing to make deals with anyone just to gain power, even when he couldn’t keep up his end. He is also extremely sadistic and saw pleasure in the chaos he caused when he tried to execute the royal families and when he marched his dragon to the Fairy Kingdom.
A summary for his personality is that Lloyd wants nothing but power and is willing to do anything to obtain it. He is as ambitious as he is cunning as he is treacherous, and is loyal to no one but himself. In the end he showed genuine fear when he was dragged down by the undead creatures, showing that he has a fear of death, something no tyrant could control.
