~ Gettys denouncing his victim, Barbara. |
Lloyd Gettys is a minor antagonist in the 1997 supernatural horror film The Devil's Advocate. He is a schoolteacher on trial for molesting his female students, and defended in court by protagonist Kevin Lomax.
He is portrayed by Chris Bauer, who also portrayed Machine in 8mm and Ted Bryar in Criminal Minds.
Biography
Gettys is a pedophile who molests young girls, and works as a schoolteacher so he can have access to children. He is married with a young son, but his family is nothing to him but a means of appearing normal so parents will think nothing of leaving their children alone with him.
His latest victim, a young girl named Heather, tells her parents what he did to her, and they go to the police. Gettys is arrested and put on trial, and hires prominent lawyer Kevin Lomax to defend him. Lomax believes Gettys is innocent at first, but discovers his client is guilty during trial, when Gettys touches himself under the table while Barbara tearfully testifies about what he did to her. Lomax is disgusted, but nevertheless wins the trial by mercilessly destroying Barbara's credibility. The charges against Gettys are dropped. Lomax's victory in court attracts the attention of primary antagonist John Milton, who hires him and sets the plot in motion.
Months later, a U.S. Justice Department agent who is investigating Milton tells Lomax that Gettys had been arrested with the dead body of a little girl in the trunk of his car; it is implied that Gettys raped and murdered her.
At the end of the film, when Lomax is taken back in time to the day of Gettys' trial, Lomax decides to do the right thing and refuse to further defend Gettys, even if it means disbarment. As he is led away by court officers, an enraged Gettys threatens to ruin Lomax's career. It is implied that he will be found guilty and go to prison.
