F-ck off!
~ Logan Roy's catchphrase.
Life's not knights on horseback. It's a number on a piece of paper. It's a fight for a knife in the mud.
~ Logan explaining his philosophy.
You're such f-cking dopes. You're not serious figures. I love you… but you are notserious people.
~ Logan to his children.

Logan Roy is the main antagonist of the HBO drama series Succession.

He is the founder of Waystar-Royco, a corrupt media organization that he rules with an iron fist, while seeking to acquire all of his business rivals and become the number one media conglomerate in the world. He is also the father of Connor, Kendall, Roman, and Siobhan Roy, all of whom he regularly abuses to keep them in line and to supposedly prepare them to succeed him.

He was portrayed by Brian Cox, who also played Hannibal Lecktor in Manhunter, Killearn in Rob Roy, Hermann Goering in Nuremberg, Ward Abbott in the Jason Bourne film series, Dark Yabu in Vexx, William Stryker in X2: X-Men United, Lionel Starkweather in Manhunt, Agamemnon in Troy, Scolar Visari in Killzone, Pariah Dark in Danny Phantom, General Hemmer in Battle for Terra, Mr. Kreeg in Trick 'r Treat, Jack Denham in Syndicate, Conrad in Bob the Builder, Kostas Becker in The Simpsons and Niander Wallace, Sr. in Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

Biography[]

Logan Roy was born in Dundee, Scotland on 14 October 1938. His impoverished, widowed mother Helen sent him to be raised in Canada by his uncle Noah, who was heavily abusive to the point of leaving scars on Logan's back. Eventually, Roy moved to America and founded Waystar-Royco, which became the 5th largest conglomerate over the next 60 years. He married three times, the first marriage producing his eldest son Connor, with the second producing Kendall, Roman and Siobhan "Shiv" Roy.

Personality[]

He's morally bankrupt. He's a nothing man who may well be more personally responsible for the death of this planet than any other single human being.
~ Ewan Roy describing Logan.

Logan can initially present himself as a genuine, honest businessman who only wants to sell media to people. However, in truth, the only thing he really seems to care about is the continued prosperity and ascension of his company, Waystar Royco, and his family. He easily sheds his mask when angered, becoming proud, arrogant, stubborn, impatient, foul-mouthed and short-tempered; His ruthless ambitions make him an intimidating, cunning, and domineering bully who coldly uses his leverages to control those around him. He shows no respect to anyone, frequently berating others for petty reasons, firing his closest workers at a hat's drop, as well as treating his own offspring according to how loyal they are to his goals. However, he is shown to care about his wife Marcia, and at least for his children's physical well-being.

Logan believes in an extremely patriarchal and conservative lifestyle. For him, the only way to get ahead in life is through "balls", courage, and control. It is implied that Logan was abused as a child, presumably beaten by his uncle, and this may have influenced his tough mentality.

Though at first Logan is trying to find an heir, soon his selfish actions are made clear. He is too arrogant to leave control of his companies in the hands of his children. It could be said that his actions are justified, considering the childish mentality of his children. However, it is clear throughout the story that Logan raised them that way.

Due to his difficult childhood, Logan has always encouraged competition between his children. In his view, this would "prepare them for life", but it only served to deteriorate their mental health. Furthermore, Logan is constantly manipulating everyone around him, including his own family, just to win. He is unable to change because he finds this system perfect, a system that "works". It is made clear that Logan not only knows about, but encourages all the atrocities committed by his companies. He doesn't care about the damage of his actions, or the death of innocents, considering it all just business. Still, Logan does care for his children on some level, but fails to show that love and care in a healthy way.

Logan is constantly on medication, considering his health and age. This may have influenced his mental deterioration over the years.

Trivia[]

  • Brian Cox has claimed his work on Succession to be his favourite of his career.
  • Logan Roy was initially meant to die at the end of Season 1, but the writers ultimately decided to keep him as according to Cox, they realized Logan was the "centrifugal force" of the series.
  • Logan Roy was originally written to be from Quebec, Canada, but was ultimately changed to be born in Dundee, Scotland, to accommodate his actor Cox who was also raised there.
  • Being a media mogul with a vast multinational corporate empire, and having multiple competing heirs, make him reminiscent of Rupert Murdoch, although Logan was born in Scotland whereas the other was born in Australia.
