~ Loki expressing how he revels in chaos |
Loki, also known falsely as "Harle", is a major antagonist in Dragalia Lost, and one of the overall overarching antagonists. An Archdemon from ancient times, Loki was released from his prison by the Progenitor who intended to use him to further his plans. To his end, Loki would steal the identity of a Royal Guard Captain named Harle, banishing him to another realm and taking his place. Using this position, Loki would begin helping out in plots to further Xenos's return such as assisting Morsayati in his endeavours and orchestrating the revival of Satan.
He and the real Harle are voiced by Kenichirō Ōhashi/KENN (who also voiced Secco in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind) in Japanese and Adam Trask in English.
Appearance[]
Loki takes the form of Harle, who is a man with short brown hair while supporting a smug expression on his face. He wears a dark blue and purple jacket with a fur collar, a silver chestplate with gold details, purple pants and brown belts. He also mostly supports a bowed down gesture in an attempt to conceal his sadistic personality with his politeness. As this is apparently not his original form, it's unknown what Loki truly looks like.
Personality[]
Loki is incredibly selfish and cruel, embodying the capricious chaos that Xenos believed possibility would bring. Witty and mischievous, he enjoys tormenting his enemies with insincere cordiality, as shown by how he politely greets Harle when he first appears to him, revealing his entire plan before sending him into the Otherworld, knowing that there would be nothing the knight could do to stop him even if he knew his plans. He also lacks remorse and enjoys corrupting and manipulating others, being one of the people who triggered the return of Morsayati by convincing King Aurelius, along with a Xenos-manipulated Phares to seek out a new Sacred Shard, using Black Mana to cruelly transform the dragon Sylvia into the fiend Hypnos, as well as tricking Origa and Basileus into reviving Satan, telling them that his power could stop Xenos.
Like the real Harle, Loki is quite tricky and conniving, but while the real Harle has standards and is steadfast to his companions, Loki is alright with betraying anybody to further his goals, assisting Ciella with procuring documents to expose Euden as a replacement heir despite the Agito opposing the return of his creator, attempting to steal the Dawnshard for himself after being ordered by Graht to retrieve it as well as tricking him into becoming the 666th soul sacrificed to summon Satan. He isn't loyal to Xenos or his fellow Archdemons either, simply cooperating with them so as to create as much chaos as he wants, and his love of chaos is so great, even in death he simply remarks that the final duel between Euden and Xenos would be very entertaining, not caring for his own demise.
Despite this, Harle seems to care for his master Satan as he is shown lulling him to sleep and asking of him to rest, but whether he is simply showing the Demonlord the same sarcastic politeness or he genuinely cares for Satan is unknown. It's also known that Loki's behaviour is a result of being created to showcase the evilness of possibility and chaos, though he seems to genuinely enjoy this purpose.
Biography[]
Harle appears in Chapter 2 alongside Euden's brother, Emile, who not so subtly betray Euden and pledge himself towards the Dyrenell Empire while tracking his whereabouts. Catching the heroes themselves, Harle, alongside Emile, then branded them as a traitor of the Dyrenell Empire because of the crimes Euden hasn't done such as kidnapping the Ilian Auspex, Zethia, or releasing the fiends and then proceeds to order the soldiers to arrest them.
Managing to run away, the heroes then found a nearby Sylvan Village, Woodhaven, that was in ruins. However, most of the people evacuate from the attack with the exception of a little Sylvan Girl, Sarisse. Attempting to evade the capture from Emile so that she won't talk about what happened to the rest of the Sylvans, the rest of the soldiers managed to capture her while Harle advises Emile to lock Sarisse in a cage.
Harle then reappears again after seeing Emile lost his pact with his dragon, Mercury, due to his condescending attitude while sneering about it and reminding Euden that Aurelius tried to kill all of the dragons, starting with the Flamewyrm in Mount Adolla. After this, both Emile and Harle then went to Mount Adolla to see what the king has done.
Returning in Chapter 3, Harle then watches the king trying to kill the flamewyrm in joy while cheering him to do so and when Zethia tries to tell that her brother will stop him, Harle snarkily insults her due to her bold words. When Zethia attempts to stop King Aurelius from killing the dragon, Harle then instantly prevents her to do so. As the heroes attempts to stop King Aurelius, Harle then taunts the heroes that as the flamewyrm is on her last breath, she will exterminate the heroes once and for all while ceremoniously retreats with the king.
Returning again in Chapter 5, as Morsayati successfully possess Zethia, Harle then follows her orders to issue a proclamation towards Grastaea that the king is dead and Zethia will become the new empress, fully transforming Alberia into a true tyrannical Dyrenell Empire. As the heroes manages to defeat Valyx and his soldiers, Harle then informs the Empress about it while musing that a measure had been taken to suppress the rebellion while some of Euden's siblings alreeady taken measures about it.
During the "Kindness and Captivity" event, Harle leads an invasion into a small village, capturing its guardian dragon Sylvia. Fortunately, the village surrendered peacefully and few lives were lost, with only a single Sylvan girl, Melsa escaping. The girl and Euden's friends arrive, trying to stop the invasion but Harle sets the humongous fiend Hypnos onto them. Managing to weaken the fiend, Harle congratulates the party on defeating the beast, scaring Melsa before summoning another copy of Hypnos from the Otherworld. The party is shocked, to which he reveals that the real Hypnos lies in the Otherworld. The party quickly hop into the Otherworld using an Otherworld Shard they got earlier, causing Harle to mock their optimism. They triumph, but Harle reveals that the real Hypnos still survives and orders its projection to kill the party. However, it refuses so he and his troops retreat for now. Melsa and the party return, but she tearfully reveals she betrayed them as Harle and his troops advance with Hypnos. Harle gleefully explains that he held Sylvia and the village's autonomy as ransom for the villagers' obedience, and Melsa was forced to lure Euden in to kill him with the fiend. He also reveals that Hypnos is in fact, Sylvia corrupted with black mana, before sending out even more clones to destroy the village. Harle mocks Euden for forgiving Melsa, and happily reveals that if the party somehow uncorrupts Sylvia Hypnos would be defeated, claiming it to be impossible before leaving. However, the party manage to defeat Hypnos and release Sylvia, so Harle, very surprised, decides that he'll need stronger fiends and thus retreats with his troops.
Returning in Chapter 7, he then mocked Emile in a sarcastic manner after the latter trying to joins Valyx army to destroy Euden once and for all with his bootheel while warning the Empress about how Euden has becoming increasingly dangerous and must be ridden immediately. As the heroes managed to form an alliance with St. Lotier to oppose the Empire, he then reported the Empress about what happened.
Returning again in Chapter 10, he then asked about the Empress condition and began to grew ecstatic after seeing her overjoy much to the Empress's disgust as the two then depart to to Clave Loy'elune, the largest binding ruin that seals Morsayati's main body while inviting several of Euden's siblings into the ruins.
Meeting again with the heroes, Harle then taunts them about how they will watches as the Empress will gain full strength after unsealing the main part of Morsayati's body which resulted on them getting surrounded by a powerful miasma. After the Empress successfully doing so and seeing Euden's resolve to free Zethia and save the world from Morsayati, Harle simply tells Euden whether he can fled the scene before talking about saving the world. As the heroes return to the Haildom in disappointment, Harle was digging several documents about Alberia's dark secret much to his entertainment.
During the Chapter 11 interlude, Harle then intentionally attacks a church with several believers inside it under the pretense that the church was attacked by the Perditionists in order to lure one of Euden's companions, Elisanne, out of the hiding. After successfully luring Elisanne, he then gives the documents about the dark secret regarding the Seventh Scion so that he could see Elisanne's suffering for his own amusement. As Elisanne attempts to force Harle to give the documents to her, Harle simply refuses and retreats from the scene.
It was soon revealed that the documents he had possessed contains the conversation with Aurelius and someone known as Finlorda that the real Euden died 10 months after his birth due to the wyrmscale disease and as a result, the king had no choice but to adopt someone to replace the Euden that died. According to Elisanne, this secret would rather defame Aurelius's nature as a fair king and she then began to doubt if this documents were truly forged at all.
Returning again in Chapter 13's interlude, Harle then engages a meeting in a burned church with one of the Agito known as Ciella, who is also a former paladyn, as he gave several documents towards her about Euden's true origin while revealing himself being a man who enjoy sowing the seeds of chaos everywhere he goes and after the conversation, Harle then retreats and simply watches the drama that will unfolds in the capital city as the heroes march to there.
The "Agents of the Goddess" event reveals Harle to be working for Graht and Basileus in their efforts to revive demons. "Divine Deception" further reveals that "Harle" isn't his real name. When Madame attempts to reveal Harle's real name though, she dies of a heart attack. It is unknown what the cause was whether it was the work of Harle or the strain of the transformation she underwent from the sealing stone.
Chapter 18 shows that Harle isn't loyal to Graht either. When Graht send him in the same direction as the halidom party to collect the Dawnshard for him, Harle expresses intent on keeping it to himself.
Come "Faith Forsaken", it is revealed that Harle isn't actually Harle at all, but a demon by the name of Loki who banished the real Harle to another dimension and stole his identity to commit atrocities. He proved to be so good at impersonating Harle that when Nevin meets him after having met the real deal, he admits that he can't tell the difference.
Eventually, Loki finds himself bested by Harle who gets revenge against Loki for sending him to another dimension by doing the same to him. However, he is brought back not too long after by the Progenitor. He displays no loyalty or gratefulness for the Progenitors actions and only says that he intends to oppose him much like the heroes.
Loki appears again in Bondforged Euden's adventurer story to torment the prince once more along with Iblis. The party attack him, who comments that while they are strong, their strength is borrowed from their friends and attempts to prove it to him by blasting him away. Euden is knocked out when he is sent there and begins dreaming that his friends were killed and that with them gone he is powerless. He wakes up and realises he was sent flying off a cliff and goes off to regroup with his allies. Suddenly, Euden sees a village under attack from fiends. He gets the villagers to evacuate while he holds them off and with great difficulty, holds them off. Unfortunately, the villagers mistook a fiend for him in the distance and were all killed, causing Euden to doubt himself further. He heads back to the Halidom, only to see that Midgardsormr has been corrupted by black mana and killed everyone. Euden manages to bring Midgardsormr to his senses, but he is heavily injured. Iblis arrives and mocks the friendship between the two and that Midgardsormr is willing to serve humans weaker than him. Midgardsormr rebuts, stating that it is Iblis is too proud to see the importance and power of bonds. Iblis laughs at his determination and kills Midgardsormr in front of Euden.
As Midgardsormr fades away, Euden begs him to stay, which Midgardsormr tells him that their bonds will remain forever even when he's gone. Euden feels Midgardsormr's gale, and, reassured, summons his power once more to Iblis's surprise. Euden senses Loki's presence and orders him to come out. He is surprised by the prince's determination and decides to create an even worse scenario for him, to which Euden says it's useless as he knows he is currently in a fake world created by Loki, which is why he couldn't summon his armor, not because his friends were dead, but because he didn't form any bonds in the fake world. Loki applauds his observance but insists that he still cannot be beaten. However, Euden begins regaining power as the bonds he made are within him and sends himself and Loki back to the real world.
There, they see the party and Midgardsormr, who sensed what happened to Euden. The party face off against Loki, who brushes them aside with ease. However, Euden, taking the advice of the parallel Midgardsormr, uses the power of his bonds to attack Loki and deal a fatal blow. As Loki dies, he remarks that bonds are truly powerful things indeed and the party's battle against Xenos would be very interesting.
Trivia[]
- When Loki meets up with Lilith in "Dance to the Demon's whims", she remarks on how she can recognise him though his appearance has changed, leaving his true appearance unknown.
- It is unknown how powerful Loki truly is, as Satan takes his form when tormenting Origa, showing that he is an Archdemon that possesses one of Satan's fragments, so it is implied that at his true power he could be as powerful as the rest of the Sinister Dominion.
- Loki's strength is shown in Bondforged Euden's adventurer's story as not only does he create an illusionary dimension to torment the prince, he effortlessly brushes away the Halidom party before finally only being defeated by a bond-empowered Euden.
