Lola is the secondary antagonist on the sports musical Damn Yankees. She is a servant of the Devil.

She was portrayed by the late Gwen Verdon, who also played Roxie Hart In Chicago.

Biography[]

Past[]

Lola is 172 years old, Once an old, ugly woman, she sold her soul to the Devil to become young and beautiful. She helps the Devil with various deeds and resides in Hell whenever he doesn't need her.

Film[]

Lola is summoned by Applegate after she finished multiple attacks on buildings to seduce Joe Hardy and make him forget about his wife. Lola confidently sings about how she is overqualified for the job, listing how she has seduced, attacked, and created scandals surrounding men.

Lola, disguised as a South American dancer "Señorita Lolita Banana", corners Joe in the locker room and tries to seduce him, but ultimately fails due to him being too loyal to his wife. Applegate then angrily banishes Lola.

This isn't the last time Lola is seen though, as she reappears in the Washington tribute to the Senators.

At this point, Lola has developed genuine feelings for Joe and does not want him to lose the last game as Applegate planned. She drugs Applegate so he sleeps through most of the event, and when he discovers this, he turns her back into an ugly hag.

Applegate arrives at the ball game and switches Joe Hardy back into Joe Boyd in front of the whole stadium. Despite this, the Senators still win aas an unrecognized Joe escapes.

When Joe returns to his house, Applegate tries to convince him to resume being Joe Hardy and switches Lola back into her beautiful state to tempt him, Joe ignores Applegate and he disappears.

Other Versions[]

In the original musical, Lola is much kinder but suffers a worse fate.

Lola supports Joe in his games after she is fired by Applegate and even testifies for him in court when he tries to slander Joe. She is never reverted to her original stage though and at the end she disappears with Applegate.
