The Lone EggRobo (also known as the Prime EggRobo or Boss EggRobo) is a recurring antagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
It serves as one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Mecha Sonic) of the video game Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, serving as the final antagonist of Sonic the Hedgehog's plotline in the post credits, and primarily serving as the main antagonist of Knuckles the Echidna's plotline. It also possibly appears as one of the four secondary antagonists (alongside Metal Sonic, Tails Doll, and Metal Knuckles) in Sonic R, however, it is unknown if the EggRobo from that game is the same one.
It is a vengeful and self-aware EggRobo who survived the explosion of the Death Egg, and went after Knuckles the Echidna, possibly on its own volition, or was sent by its master Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik to dispose of Knuckles as he deemed him a potential threat. It was also likely partnered with Mecha Sonic, who was the second-in-command of Dr. Eggman's army at that time, possibly making it a high-ranking member of the Eggman Empire.
Biography
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Sonic and Knuckles
Following the destruction of the Death Egg and the defeat of Dr. Robotnik, a single EggRobo survived the destruction, and sought to avenge it's master, who was recovering from his defeat. The trauma of the disaster was believed to have initiated an obtainment of self-awareness to it.
The surviving EggRobo then found Knuckles the Echidna, who was resting in Angel Island, and attempted to kill him on the spot by throwing a bomb next to him. Knuckles fortunately survived the attack, and chased after the EggRobo, who continued to torment him throughout the game, utilizing copies of the battle machines Robotnik had used against Sonic and Tails the previous adventure. Knuckles confronted the EggRobo in various locations, only for EggRobo to escape after being hit eight times.
The EggRobo eventually ceased going after Knuckles after their battle in Sandopolis up until Knuckles reached Sky Sanctuary, where the EggRobo appeared again to confront Knuckles for the last time with a giant claw under its Eggmobile, which was used to pick up Knuckles before he could fight back and bring him to Mecha Sonic, Robotnik's right-hand robot, whom had been working with the EggRobo to corner and kill Knuckles.
EggRobo restrained Knuckles so that Mecha Sonic could do the honors, but it backfired when Knuckles managed to escape EggRobo's grasp, leading to Mecha accidentally destroying EggRobo while aiming for Knuckles. Mecha Sonic then attempted to avenge EggRobo by fighting Knuckles head-on, thus initiating the final showdown between Knuckles and Mecha Sonic, with the former coming out victorious.
With the last two remnants of Robotnik defeated, Robotnik's presence was gone from Angel Island for now, and the island was peaceful once again (until Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2).
Sonic R
In Sonic R, EggRobo now known as Eggman Robo in Japan, appears as an unlockable character and one of the secondary antagonists of the story along with Metal Sonic, Tails Doll, and Metal Knuckles. He is one of Dr. Robotnik's minions and the robotic counterpart to him. It is unknown if it is the same Eggrobo from Knuckles story, but its Japanese bio refers to the robot in individual terms, suggesting it as at least an advanced model like the lone Eggrobo was.
In gameplay, EggRobo has most of the abilities Robotnik has; It is able to fire homing missiles, temporarily hover above water, and despite being rather slow and clunky, it has great cornering ability.
Other Media
Sonic the Comic
Another lone EggRobo appears as the main antagonist of the one-shot special edition Knuckles Knock-Out Special story "Jake's Story", where it was left behind when Robotnik was kicked out of the Floating Island. It was running out of power supply, needing to find an organic battery. It soon found a house with an open window in Mushroom Hill Zone, where a young bear named Jake was sleeping. The EggRobo kidnapped Jake and rocketed away when the Emerald Hill folk came to see what is the matter. Jake's mother came to check in on Jake, only to find his room empty. The Emerald Hill folk called Knuckles to get him back.
Knuckles chased the EggRobo down to Lava Reef Zone, where he confronted the EggRobo. Jake was nowhere to be seen, but then Knuckles realized that this was because the EggRobo had already absorbed Jake as an organic battery. Knuckles tried not to hit the robot too hard, as it would hurt Jake. Before Knuckles defeated the EggRobo, it was caught by a gout of flame, which led to it exploding, and being completely destroyed, leaving no trace of Jake.
Knuckles, believing that Jake was killed from the explosion, turned to go back to Jake's house and tell his mother the bad news. However, when he got there, he found out that Jake was completely alive and well, and the EggRobo did not ever succeed in kidnapping him at all. Despite Knuckles' efforts to defeat the EggRobo being completely useless, he was happy that Jake was still alive.
Personality
The EggRobo is an extremely intelligent robot, being capable of both improving on its master's strategies and making well thought-out plans such as restraining Knuckles so that he couldn't fight back and hold him in place so Mecha Sonic could do the honors, and would have likely succeeded if it's grip was tighter. The EggRobo will also work with fellow Eggman robots if it means gaining an advantage over its opponent.

Trivia
- It is possible that the Heavy King from Sonic Mania may be linked to the Prime EggRobo, as Heavy King also goes for the Master Emerald, uses a similar crane to the one that the Lone Eggrobo used to grab Knuckles, and is the one who fights Knuckles, in addition to powering up with the Master Emerald similarto Mecha Sonic. However, the EggRobo was destroyed at the end of Knuckles' plotline, meaning that if they are the exact same EggRobo, his remains would have to be recovered by Robotnik from Angel Island, with its rebuilt form later getting mutated into Heavy King.
- It is also possible that the Prime EggRobo was in fact a sixth member of the Hard-Boiled Heavies, as they were a group of elite EggRobos like the Prime EggRobo, and there are only five of the Hard-Boiled Heavies. If the Prime EggRobo were to survive long enough, it could have become mutated like the rest of the Heavies.
- He was believed to be Dr. Robotnik in disguise by fans so that Knuckles wouldn't know that he was the villain, but it is heavily implied that the Knuckles plotline takes place after Sonic's.
- It is unknown if this specific EggRobo is just a regular Badnik, or a special variant. The latter seems more likely, as the EggRobo appears far more intelligent and durable than any of the Badnik EggRobos, which all have one attack strategy and are destroyed in one hit, it also contains no animal. It is believed either following the destruction of the Death Egg, the trauma from the disaster awoke a form of self-awareness in this EggRobo in which he sought vengeance on Knuckles and conspired with Mecha Sonic on it's own volition or Robotnik recovered it and reprogrammed it with a more independent intelligence to increase it's efficiency in targeting Knuckles as a final contingency.
- In Sonic R, while it is unknown if it is referring to this EggRobo specifically, it mentions that an EggRobo (referred to as Eggman Robo) was intended to be Eggman's strongest creation yet, outmatching even his greatest creations, including all of the Metal Sonic series models combined. Thanks to its egg-shaped body, The EggRobo failed to live up to the doctor's expectations, but it could still reach speeds comparable to that of Metal Sonic, Robotnik also boasts of the offensive abillities that EggRobo has, meaning that EggRobo is one of, if not the greatest invention of Eggman yet, aswell as being his robotic equal.
- It is speculated that the Prime EggRobo assisted Dr. Robotnik in piloting the Great Eggman Robo mech, the final boss of Sonic's plotline. If one attempts to access this stage as Knuckles, Robotnik is seen running into the robot before the fight, but the EggRobo is the one that leaves the mech in the final phase.
- The Great Eggman Robo itself is supposedly a giant EggRobo, hence its name and appearance.
- While the final confrontation with the EggRobo in Sonic the Comic takes place in Lava Reef Zone, the EggRobo ironically does not have a boss fight in Lava Reef Zone in Sonic & Knuckles at all.
- While the Lone EggRobo looks completely identical to a regular EggRobo at first glance, it actually has a few differences from the standard EggRobo, namely its more orange-tinted collar as opposed to a more yellow one, and its shoulders appear to be lower than the average EggRobo.
