Captain Silverbones

Captain Silverbones, head of the Thunderous Plunderers.

Long John Silverbones, or Captain Silverbones for short, is the main antagonist of the 2022 Square Enix Dragon Quest spin-off, Dragon Quest Treasures. He is the ruthless leader of the antagonistic treasure hunting faction known as the Thunderous Plunderers, and is the archnemesis of the Sylphanian Seekers as well as Team Treasure.

Appearance[]

Silverbones is a pirate skeleton not quite proportional in size to that of a human, who wears a purplish-dark and golden-clad pirate captain outfit and has two crimson red eyes. He also wields a gun and wears black boots and has some sort of belt thing sticking out in his chest.

Biography[]

Past[]

Not much is known about Silverbones' past before he became what he is today, but from the Levanter Training side quests it was revealed that he was once a partner of Captain Levanter, until one day, he let his powers consume him and left the Sylphanian Seekers in order to form his own band of treasure-hunters. At some point in the past he met Gustav, Bonnie, and presumably Shady, Shambles and Mogsworth and recruited them, forming the pirate gang known as the Thunderous Plunderers, with the intent of hoarding every last treasure in Draconia and collecting all Seven Stones in order to reach La Isla Dorada and steal the fabled Treasure Of Treasures.

Dragon Quest Treasures (2022)[]

Silverbones first appeared after a boss fight against a hostile Heartless Hunter in the Forgotten Factory, having stolen the Amethyst Fang and dismissing Admiral Mogsworth for his constant failed attempts of bringing back any worthwhile treasure for the Thunderous Plunderers. He also viewed Erik and Mia as nothing more than a bunch of jokes, due to the fact that they were young and would prove to be of no challenge to him. After this, Silverbones would have very little presence in the main story, only being briefly mentioned by Bonnie in the quest, The Stolen Fang, one of the Seven Stone story quests.

Silverbones would later reappear in the climax, using Gustav, Shady and Shambles as a decoy attack squad so that he could snatch the Seven Stones with little challenge, explaining his minimal presence after his introductory cutscene. He would then use the Sapphire Eye's power to reveal La Isla Dorada's location, and left Team Treasure Island. Erik and Mia, with the help of the Sylphanian Seekers, managed to catch up to Silverbones by using the Cloud Compass mentioned from their adult selves within the magic mirror in the depths of the Snarl. When the twins finally caught up to him, he had already assembled the Dragonstones in order to reveal the Treasure Of Treasures, only to be disappointed when he thought the Treasure of Treasures was just the Seven Stones united into one. He would then take out his anger on the twins, lose, and get captured by the Sylphanian Seekers.

In the post-game, after Silverbones was captured, Levanter laments on his fall from grace and states that he can't imprison him forever. Then, Erik and Mia deliver a message from Gustav saying that the Thunderous Plunderers would like to make amends with the Sylphanians, even going so far as to deliver a Sunstone, which Levanter describes as an incredibly rare treasure. This however, turned out to be a ruse, as the Sunstone was actually a Stunstone, which bought Gustav and his men enough time to knock out all the Sylphanians around the Maneland camp and free their captain. Silverbones then retreated back to La Isla Dorada somehow, without the power of the Dragonstones, and demanded a rematch from Team Treasure, this time not holding anything back. Upon his re-defeat, he laments how he is unable to defeat Team Treasure even at full power, however shows a newfound sense of honor and respect towards Team Treasure, and gifts them a replica of the Dragonstone, as well as a statue of the fallen captain himself.

Powers and Abilities[]

While most of his in-game dirty work is done by his crew, there is a reason as to why Silverbones doesn't have any direct involvements in Team Treasure's affairs until the climax. Unlike Gustav or Bonnie, Silverbones is perfectly capable of holding his own against Team Treasure and is mostly unreliant towards his team of monsters. Not only is he an experienced gunslinger, but he is also able to cast powerful magic, such as being able to summon giant icicles, a storm of phantom swords, a giant blast of darkness, and an entire sea of spikes to pierce his enemies. He is also shown to have some possession abilities, being able to possess the stone statues of the three ancient guardian beasts of Draconia that being Rimeblood, Proudmane and Hornbull respectively.

Trivia[]

  • Long John Silverbones is based on the main antagonist of the old timey classic novel Treasure Planet, Long John Silver.
  • During the boss fight against Silverbones, it is possible to snatch the Seven Stones back from Silverbones by correctly timing every pinching minigame when he's downed from having his ultimate attack interrupted, and if Mia is still alive, two of the stones can be pinched instead of one. It is however, optional to steal back the Dragonstones from Silverbones, as the final boss battle against him can be won entirely without having to pinch any of the Seven Stones, or if you couldn't manage to steal all the stones back before his health bar is fully depleted.
  • If Silverbones is defeated without any of the Dragonstones snatched back, it won't lead to a bad or alternative ending of some sorts as the remaining Dragonstones will be automatically returned to your trove through the following cutscene after the boss and the Sylphanian Seekers will still capture Silverbones after he passed out on their deck. As such, whether or not you take back the Dragonstones will ultimately not matter whatsoever, despite how important the game makes it out to be.
