Dale Ferdinand Kobble, better known as Longlegs, is the titular main antagonist of the 2024 crime horror film of the same name.
He is a mysterious and twisted satanist murderer who has formed an alliance with Satan and creates dolls which are then used to magically influence people into committing the crimes. He is also the arch-nemesis of FBI Agent Lee Harker, whom he has a creepy obsession with for personal reasons.
He was portrayed by Nicolas Cage, who also played Jacob Sullivan in Sympathy for the Devil, Castor Troy in Face/Off, Yuri Orlov in Lord of War, Brent Ryan in Mom and Dad, Speckles in G-Force, Little Junior Brown in Kiss of Death, Peter Loew in Vampire’s Kiss, Nicky Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and Dracula in Renfield.
Appearance[]
Longlegs is a tall man with extremely pale skin, either the result of makeup or it being his natural skin tone, and he has long gray hair that is slightly curly and tangled. His most prominent feature is his lumpy and puffy face, which is the result of several botched plastic surgery’s that were either improperly performed or failed to heal normally. He often dresses in androgynous, layered clothing, somewhat resembling the fashion of an elderly woman.
Personality[]
Longlegs is shown to be a creepy and odd individual, who quickly proves himself to be a crazed and twisted man with a sick devotion to the devil. On many occasions, the man tends to scream to himself, acting strange to everyone he meets, and bursts into dancing at random intervals, marking him as a childish and immature person. However, underneath that childish and strange persona, he is also proven to be terrifyingly clever and effective.
Longlegs has shown to be a sadistic and ruthless serial killer, taking great pleasure in the havoc and pain he commits, while also showing his fanatical devotion to Satan, as he often worships him and commits his terrible deeds in his name with Longlegs being in love with Satan and wanting to impress him as best as he can.[1] He lacks empathy for other individuals, and doesn't comprehend them, only seeing them as people to be manipulated and murdered.
Although Longlegs is incredibly strange and childish, there are times where he is capable of being serious without being strange at times. For example, he dropped his bizarre behavior when Ruth continued to reject his "gifts", which personally enraged him to the point of personally attacking Ruth with the intention of killing her. The only reason why she was spared is because Longlegs wanted to use her as an accomplice for his murders, promising to spare Lee if she does so.
Biography[]
Past[]
Sometime before the 1970s, Dale Ferdinand Kobble was a glam rocker who underwent a series of botched plastic surgeries throughout his career. This most likely resulted in him making a deal with Satan in the 60s, that he would take the lives of multiple families within the next 30 years, and in return would be granted an unknown benefit in the afterlife. Kobble took on the moniker 'Longlegs' and went on to commit his terrible deeds in the name of his master.
The Birthday Murders[]
On July 14th, 1966, a doll would be gifted to 3400 block of Rhododendron Street, the home of the the Applewhite family. That night, the man of the family, Harland Applewhite would murder his daughter, Theresa and wife, Patricia in a gruesome manner before committing suicide with a 12-guage shotgun. The Police and those related and close to the Whiteapples would be left confused as handwriting not belonging to any of the Whiteapples and it was insanely out of character for Harland.
On June 20th, 1968, another doll would be sent to the Clover Family on Waxcap Way which resulted in another murder suicide by the families father. Although they ruled the killings a murder-suicide perpetrated by Marshall, a successful travel agent the Umatilla County Sheriff John Squires felt that the incident felt too similar to the Applewhite family incident. The similarities included the savagery and additional element of Satanic imagery indicative of a devil-worshipper. Their suspicions were confirmed when they found a letter on the refrigerator, written in coded characters At the bottom, the message long Lakes was signed in ink
On January 13th, 1974, Kobble first arrives at the home of Lee Harker, the main protagonist of the film and there, he tries to gift her and her mother Ruth with his doll, but Ruth refuses. He tries to give the Harker Family his doll, but Ruth refuses again, with Longlegs even singing a song to warn her to stop her refusal. Eventually, growing enraged by her rejection, he subdued Lee's mother before offering her a deal. If Ruth agrees to be his accomplice then Lee will be spared from him and Satan, with Ruth accepting and as a result, Longlegs moves into the Harker Home's basement.
Longlegs[]
In November 1993, Longlegs still continues on with his killing-sprees, assisted by Ruth, going around and using his dolls to influence the fathers into murdering their families and then themselves when the deed is done. He then leaves cryptic Satanic coding, spelling his alias. These murders are being investigated by a now young adult Lee, who just became a new recruit for the FBI. During the investigation, Lee manages to connect the similarities of the murders: Each families have a 9 year old daughter born on the 14th of the month, and the murders all happened within six days before or after the birthday itself. When written out on a linear calendar, the dates of the strange murders form an occult symbol of an inverted triangle, with one date missing to complete the shape.
Lee and her supervisor then find a doll buried in one of the former crime scenes, where they find a strange mental orb inside the head, that emits high energy readings despite being empty. Longlegs also appears, where he talks to the doll that he dubs as "Carrie Ann" and states that she isn't scared of the dark, because she is the dark, and proceeds to cover the doll in a black robe. Longlegs is then seeing driving to a store and buying a few things, but not before doing strange stuff such as covering his face and making strange noises to a teenage clerk, who remains unfazed by his bizarre behavior and calls out her dad, saying the "gross guy" is back again, indicating that this isn't the first time he done something like this. After leaving the store, Longlegs, while driving, throws a screaming fit and singing "Daddy! Mommy! Unmake me! And save me from the HELL of the living!"
Longlegs, on the day before a family was meant to be murdered, turns himself into police custody with suitcases full of satanic writing. While in police custody, he is interviewed on camera where he reveals his name and mentions Lee Harker before vaguely explaining his connections to Harker before starting to sing Happy Birthday to Lee Harker for 24 minutes though only a few seconds is shown to Lee. Lee has flashbacks to when she met Longlegs, with him talking to her mother about his friend, "Mr. Downstairs."
Longlegs speaks to Lee during an interview to which Kobble becomes emotional at the sight of Lee before explaining himself with statements that would make no sense at the time to Lee, explaining how his dolls would get in the homes of families, being masked as a "gift from the church." When Lee tells Longlegs' work is over, he agrees cryptically before leaving Lee with a vague answer to her question about who the accomplice of his and the identiy of The Man Downstairs; Ruth's Mother. Dale hails Satan before viciously bashing his head into the table, killing himself.
Longlegs is last seen in his interrogation holding room, laughing or screaming with sadistic glee at Lee killing her mother and Carter (after he was possessed by Satan), while singing "Happy Birthday". Afterwards, he repeats the last words he said before his death, hailing Satan and blows a kiss to the audience as the film ends. It's unknown when this would have been, though its possible Longlegs is in some sort of Hell or this scene was sometime during his short time spent in custody.
