Rodrigo Lopez, better known simply as Lopez, is the overarching antagonist of the Tintin comic book The Broken Ear, replacing Rodrigo Tortilla from the original story in the 1991 TV adaptation, where he was only mentioned.
He was A.J. Walker's San Theodoran guide before betraying him and stealing the diamond, concealing it into an idol, the Idol of the Broken Ear, which is ironically a gift given to Walker as a gratitude for his vow of silence with the diamond. He was chased by the Arumbayas because of this, but he managed to flee, despite his wounds.
His theft of the diamond, concealed inside the Idol of the Broken Ear, would later lead to Rodrigo Tortilla stealing the presumed Arumbayan Idol containing the diamond in a museum as well as assassinating Jacob Balthazar, before dying in his cabin and thrown in the sea by Alonso Perez and Ramon Bada, a duo of criminals who also aim to find the Idol of the Broken Ear with the diamond inside it to become wealthy.
Appearance[]
Rodrigo Lopez is a young man with a yellow hat, black hair, a white shirt, grey pants with a belt attached to his waist and brown boots.
Biography[]
The Broken Ear[]
Rodrigo Lopez served as the guide of the 19th century explorer A.J. Walker, who was exploring in the Arumbayas's jungle to study on them. After he gained their trust, they showed him an ancient gemstone, the Heart of the Jungle. However, Lopez manages to steal the diamond and conceal it inside the Idol of the Broken Ear, causing the Arumbayas to chase after the expedition, but he managed to flee before they could attack him, despite being heavily wounded. He then wrote a note which would later be in Rodrigo Tortilla's possession. He then dies in an unknown date.
After Lopez's death, Rodrigo Tortilla would steal the Arumbayan Idol (later revealed to be a fake one created by Jacob Balthazar) and take a trip back to South America, only to be framed by Alonso Perez and Ramon Bada as a lying crook and assassinated in his own cabin. They would then go on their way to find the diamond that Lopez concealed inside the real Arumbayan Idol.
Trivia[]
- In the animated adaptation, Rodrigo Lopez completely replaces Rodrigo Tortilla.
- While only appearing in a flashback of the story told by Ridgewell, his actions have kickstarted the whole plot of the story, as he is the one who concealed the diamond inside the Arumbayan Idol, which was what the duo of criminals, Alonso Perez and Ramon Bada, were searching in the first place.
