~ Loptous' final words after his defeat, spoken via a dying Julius. |
Loptous, also known as the Dark God, is one of the main antagonists in Nintendo's Fire Emblem franchise.
He is the overarching antagonist in the Jugdral duology, being the overarching antagonist of the 1996 tactical video game Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Manfroy) of its 1999 interquel, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.
Loptous is a dragon from the continent of Archanea, belonging to the Earth Dragon tribe like Medeus. He is the founder of the long lost Loptrian Empire and the deity worshipped by Loptr Church members, a cult of which he served as its founder as well. He is also Naga's archenemy.
Personality[]
Loptous is considered to be one of the most dreadful dragons in Fire Emblem series alongside Grima and Sombron.
Loptous is a tyrannical, heartless and horrible misanthrope that despises humanity and sees them as inferior. He is even willing to possess a human being via a Blood Pact to evade degeneration, rather than coexisting with human beings as a manakete.
For centuries, Loptous loomed Jugdral as its tyrant for generation and caused deaths of countless, children included, until his first defeat. His reawakening in Julius' form showed a shed of his cruelty. His possession corrupted Julius into a heartless tyrant with only a portion of the latter's free will and started another child hunt in order to reestablish his reign of terror.
Unlike most of the other similar villains, Loptous's villainy is a result of his own misanthropy. He neither suffered from degeneration nor a tragic past, making his cruelty even worse.
Biography[]
Past[]
In the past of thousands years before, during the decline of Earth Dragons for refusing Naga's request in becoming manaketes and blending into human society, Loptous was one of the only two Earth Dragons (alongside Medeus who had become a manakete) that did not succumb to madness or become one of the Degenerated Dragons.
During the war between Divine Dragons and Degenerated Dragons, with the declining Earth Dragons were fated to meet their defeat, Loptous encountered a human from Jugdral, named Galle. Galle requested a blood pact with Loptous to gain true power of dragons, to which Loptous agreed to make in order to unleash his hatred on humanity. During the pact, Loptous consealed his will and power into a tome named after himself.
In the process, Loptous lost his physical form, but being able to possess Galle as his host body. Then, Loptous arrived in Jugdral and established the Loptr Church, before building the tyrannical Loptrian Empire and became its de facto first emperor. He then started his bloodsheding rule, causing deaths of countless people and even children during a cruel ritual known as the Child Hunt.
Loptous continued his reign by possessing Galle's descendants for another seventeen generations, crushing down resistance against his tyranny. However, Naga soon discovered Loptous' crimes and his whereabouts. She gathered other eleven Divine Dragons and formed blood pacts with twelve warriors (later known as the Twelve Crusaders) and granted them holy weapons to defeat Loptous, creating the Miracle of Darna.
Eventually, one of the warriors named Helm (who held Naga's power) defeated and killed Loptous' final host, Emperor Galle XVII, ending the Louptrian Empire's reign of terror and seemly putting an end on Loptous' existence.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War[]
However, Loptous' bloodline managed to survive through Maera, Emperor Galle XVII's brother who possessed minor Loptous Blood, but was exiled after siding with the resistance against the Loptrian Empire's tyranny. Whilst not as malicious as his sibling, Maera's survival had also ensured the survival of Loptous himself, inadvertently.
Generations later, a descendant of Maera named Cigyun had continued the Loptous Bloodline via her marriage with Victor, the Duke of Velthomer, and giving birth to Arvis. Later, Cigyun had a love affair with Kurth, Prince of Grannvale, and gave birth to Deidre. Both Arvis and Deidre had minor Loptous blood, which was exploited by Manfroy, the current leader of Loptr Church, to make a child between them with major Loptous blood. It had triggered the entire event and war.
After brainwashing Deidre, Manfroy married her with Arvis, and they gave birth to two children, Julius and Julia. Whilst Julia carried major Naga Blood, Julius carried major Loptous Blood which became a perfect host for Loptous. Years later, Manfroy granted Loptous' tome to Julius and allowed the Dark God to possess the prince.
After his revival, Loptous planned to purge Naga's descendants, so he planned to kill off Julia. However, Deidre sacrificed herself to protect her daughter. However, Manfroy convinced Loptous to keep Julia alive for further purpose. Under Loptous' possession, Julius gradually degenerated into a cruel and power-hungry tyrant, who had taken control from his father and orchestrated the child hunt.
During the final battle, Julia was snapped out of Manfroy's brainwashing thanks to the Book of Naga. After Manfroy was slain, Loptous (who was now in control of Julius) was confronted by Julia and Seliph, and he cursed Manfroy for the latter's decision to allow Julia alive, which only became beneficial to Naga. After Julius was slain, Loptous cursed Naga and made one final vow to Seliph, claiming that he would always come back as long as evil retained in humanity. Soon, Loptous' spiritual dragon form left Julius' corpse and disappeared.
Even with Julia carrying the minor Loptous blood, as well as with the assumption of Seliph (son of Sigurd and Deidre) and Saias (son of Arvis and Aida) carrying minor Loptous blood, Loptous never did return to anywhere in Jugdral or Archanea and was never mentioned ever since.
Fire Emblem Engage[]
Loptous is among the fallen final bosses summoned as Dark Emblems by Sombron during the final battle. He is defeated by the Elyos lords alongside his fellow Dark Emblems, which allow them to destroy the energy shield protecting Sombron and slay him for good. If Sigurd faces against him, he is very doubtful that it was actually Loptous, but said he'd be his end anyway. He most likely was sent back to his world after the Fell Dragon's defeat and/or succumbed to his injuries.
He was also indirectly mentioned in Sigurd's paralogue, The Holy Knight. Sigurd mentioned to Alear how the Loptr Church members kidnapped and brainwashed Deidre so she can help resurrect Loptous and bring an age of darkness to Chalphy.
