~ Lor-Zod to Ma'alefa'ak. |
Lor-Zod is one of the two main antagonists (alongside his father Dru-Zod) of Young Justice: Phantoms, the fourth season of the series with the same name.
He is a time-traveling Kryptonian supervillain who went back to the past to kill Superboy and ensure his parents' freedom. He also is the arch-nemesis of the Legion of Superheroes and Superboy and the son of General Dru-Zod and Ursa.
He is voiced by Phil Morris, who also voiced his father, Doc Monday and Vandal Savage in Justice League: Doom.
Appearance[]
Lor-Zod has dark skin and brown eyes, he has black braided hair. He wears a black body suit complete with the House of Zod symbol on it.
Personality[]
Lor-Zod is a vengeful and intelligent Kryptonian, he went back to the past so he can free his parents from the Phantom Zone, in doing so he seemingly killed Superboy and recruited Ma'alefa'ak and Mantis.
He can give praise to those who impress him, as he remarked Mantis changed his initial perspective of him after discovering he successfully procured the Phantom Zone Projector while saving him in the process. He also compliments Ma'alefa'ak on deceiving the heroes.
He tends to underestimate people, as he did not count on Metron tricking him into poisoning him with Kryptonite and when he gloated on how the heroes couldn't defeat him on New Genesis only for them to impede his efforts. He appears to have learned from this, as he told Impulse and his allies if they complied, then they may get the chance to defeat him.
Lor-Zod, however, is very impatient and instead of waiting for time to flow on its own he went and tried to free his parents on his own when it could have been already possible later into the future after he killed Superboy.
Biography[]
Avenger form the future[]
Lor-Zod is a Kryptonian and the son of Dru-Zod and Ursa, he is from the future and is the nemesis of the Legion of Superheroes.
His parents were banished to the Phantom Zone by Jor-El and his brother Zor-El for betraying Krypton. They were unaware of Ursa being pregnant. Due to the machinations of the Phantom Zone, the pregnancy was unable to proceed. Thousands of years after the destruction of Krypton, the criminals were released from the zone and Lor was born eight months after his parents were paroled on Daxam by the United Planets. He was raised to hate the House of El and was taught to be loyal to the doctrine of his family.
When his parents were banished to the Phantom Zone for attempting another coup, Lor was orphaned because he was a minor. Ever since then, Lor-Zod made it his life mission to find a way to free his parents from the Zone and restore honor to the House of Zod. When he grew older, Lor-Zod stole a Time Sphere from the Legion of Superheroes and traveled back in time to attempt to kill Superboy when the hero introduced himself to the world, but he was stopped by the Legion and had to retreat. After the encounter with the Legion, Lor-Zod destroyed the Legion's Time Sphere, trapping them in the past.
Years later, when Superboy and Miss Martian went to Planet Mars for their wedding, Lor-Zod placed shards Kryptonite on the bomb that Ma'alefa'ak was going to use to kill all the Green, Yellow, and Red Martians. Superboy had took it upon himself to save the populace. When the bomb exploded, it was presumed that Superboy was killed due to the Kryptonite, but Phantom Girl was able to save his life while unintentionally managing to send herself and Superboy to the Phantom Zone.
Assuming that his plan succeeded and he killed Superboy, Lor-Zod went to Darkseid and said that he required help to free his parents from the Zone instead of waiting for it to happen. Darkseid agreed and ordered Ma'alefa'ak and Mantis to assist Lor-Zod. While getting acquainted, he told Ma'alefa'ak of his part with the bomb and was thanked for sending his sister Miss Martian into despair over her fiancé.
The three then went to Metron's vault and stole the Phantom Zone Projector. Their plans were however dashed by the Justice League and the New Gods, forcing the three to retreat.
Meeting his parents[]
On Trombus, he dragged the captive heroes to the sight of the portal, where they quickly incapacitated the heroes surrounding it. Seeing his parents emerge, Lor called out to them after Ma'alefa'ak uploaded English into their minds. Once they spot him, he proudly tells them the galaxy is theirs.
When Dru was skeptical he was their child, he explained he was Lor-Zod and he time traveled to free them from the Zone. Dru brought up how the Phantom Zone projector previously tried to draw him out. Lor confirmed that was him and the downed people are warriors who sought to impede him. Lor told him, as their loyal son he gathered the resources to defeat them, even showing the downed Superman, last survivor of the House of El. Somewhat convinced, Dru told him to recite the secret maxim for the House of Zod and Lor did so readily, confirming he really is their son and Lor kneeled in respect, as he promised to bring them to Earth to claim power and give the ascension their family deserves.
After a brief bout with Forager, Lor called for a retreat to Earth while Dru wanted to stay and fight but Lor told it was not the right time and he agreed. As Dru was about to enter the boomtube, he spotted the unconscious Superboy and still having use for him, he carries him through the portal.
Invading the Earth[]
Lor took his parents to Earth and took control of Superman's Fortress of Solitude as a defense. He then noticed Superboy, who was slowly regaining consciousness and starting to heal and moved to kill him but his father called him off. Lor insisted that he finished Superboy because he was from the House of El but Dru stated he turned Kon-El to his side and that his loyalty is to their family. Although reluctant, Lor backed down. He soon had his parents enter solar pods to gain powers but they were thwarted by Nightwing but Lor quickly dispatched him and saw his parents were alright, having gain invulnerability. He is then pleased by his mother becoming the Emerald Empress.
Lor watched Dru's confrontation with Superman, with Dru telling him that he preferred not to fight, stating while Superman is of the House of El, he is a fellow remaining Kryptonian and offered him the chance to join him. However, Superman refused and Ma'alefa'ak flung the kryptonite in his chest, weakening the Man of Steel who pleaded to Superboy for help. When Superboy refused to help Superman, the latter lost consciousness and Lor again begged his father to kill the pair because they are House of El and Superboy is out of his mind. Dru refused, stating he had a better idea for them.
Invasion[]
The Zods, Ma'alefa'ak, Superboy, and the unconscious Superman emerge through a boomtube in Metropolis, where the Zod family cause destruction to get attention from the citizens. Lor watched as his father announces his dominion over Earth and tells the people that they shouldn't look for help from their heroes. He showed Superboy holding the weakened Superman, stating they are both Kryptonian who betrayed their people and while one has already fallen, the other wisely chose to serve him.
Defeat[]
Working with his father, the latter apologized for not listening to his warning about Superboy. The two put up a defense against Superman and Superboy. Lor viciously assaulted him with a flurry of punches and heat vison blasts, before Miss Martian intervened. She furiously grabbed him by the head and told him to stop trying to kill her fiancé by mind blasting him, causing him intense pain. Soon Lor was defeated, and he watched as his father was sent back to the Phantom Zone while his mother escaped.
Lor then ran past the heroes and escaped in the time sphere that Rocket brought with her.
Death[]
However, Lor found that the controls had already been set to another time and he wondered where he was. Lor then found himself back on the day he failed to kill Superboy and believed fate was giving him a chance to rectify that. Lor tried to intercept Phantom Girl, as she was preparing to teleport Superboy but was distracted when the Time Sphere disappeared, leaving him stranded. He also failed to stop Phantom Girl and was soon caught in the explosion of the kryptonite bomb. He started screaming in agony, as he was incinerated and his remains left a shadowy imprint that was mistaken for Superboy. The Time Sphere returned to Metron's Vault and it is revealed his death was because of Metron's machinations in revenge for Lor breaking in the vault and torturing him.
Thanks to Emerald Empress being released from the Phantom Zone, the unborn Lor would be born in the present rather than the future. Ursa also decided to raise him to avenge the House of Zod, before heading to Daxam.
