Lord Maximus Farquaad is the main antagonist of the Broadway musical Shrek the Musical. A mean-spirited halfling Lord who wishes to become King, Farquaad plans to marry Princess Fiona to fully turn Duloc into a kingdom, and himself a King.

He is portrayed by many actors , including Christopher Sieber.

Past[]

Maximus Farquaad was born to a princess who “left her crown behind” (implied to be the Princess from “The Princess and the Pea”) and Grumpy the dwarf from Snow White. After the princess died upon falling from her 25 mattress-long bed to her death, Grumpy was left raising poor Maximus on his own.

When Maximus was 28, he at that point had started living in Grumpy’s basement, so Grumpy kicked him out, although Maximus believed he “abandoned him in the woods as a child”.

At some point afterward, he claimed the title of Lord of Duloc.

Shrek the Musical[]

Maximus Farquaad banished all fairy-tale creatures from Duloc, because he wanted a “perfect kingdom”, and resettled them in a swamp that, unbeknownst to him, was occupied by an ogre named Shrek. Later on, the Magic Mirror (or Gingy in some versions) said he is not a King, but can become one, by marrying a Princess. Gingy then tells Farquaad about Princess Fiona, leading Farquaad to pursue her.

When Shrek comes to Duloc to get his swamp back, Farquaad (as in the film) makes a deal with the ogre, that if he rescues Princess Fiona, and brings her to Duloc, he will give Shrek his swamp back.

Later on, Farquaad learns that Fiona had been rescued, and the Captain of the Guard tells him he had booked the cathedral and the band for the wedding, and asked him if he would like to invite his father (Grumpy) to the wedding, which Farquaad responds to by singing about his parents via the song “The Ballad of Farquaad”.

The next night, Shrek takes Farquaad to Fiona, upon hearing her asking “Who could love a beast so hideous and ugly?” and thinking she was referring to him. Farquaad introduces himself to Fiona, and proposes to her, which she accepts, hurt at Shrek.

At the wedding, Shrek bursts in, professing his love for Fiona, then the “fairy-tale creatures” burst in, sticking up for themselves and their rights. Grumpy then confronted Farquaad, who reveals the truth about abandoning Farquaad, after which Pinocchio reveals that Farquaad is “a halfling” and thus a hypocrite, despite Farquaad claiming he’s “not a freak, but a King”.

At that moment, the sun went down, causing Fiona to turn into an ogre in front of everyone. Horrified and disgusted, Farquaad ordered the guards to kill Shrek, and banish Fiona back to her tower, but then Dragon burst in and breathed fire at him, killing him, and ending his reign of terror.
