Lord Shingen is the father of Wolverine's beloved, Mariko Yashida, and the head of the ancient Yashida clan.
He battled Logan to the death over the corrupt man's crimes. Lord Shingen couldn't stand the sight of his shameful mutant son, the Silver Samurai, and refused to acknowledge his rightful place as part of the Yashida Clan. Although Logan triumphed at the time, Shingen was mysteriously resurrected, renewing his old campaign against the man who took his life. He returned to his manor after have been gone for years having incurred a debt to certain criminal organization. Shingen later forbade his daughter to date Logan. Challenging Logan to a duel with wooden practice swords, Shingen aimed his attacks perfectly, striking Wolverine's pain centers in order to provoke him into popping his claws. As her father hoped, Mariko was appalled and decided she wanted nothing more to do with Logan and married the abusive Noburu-Hideki instead.
Alone and defeated, Wolverine was discovered by the mysterious Yukio, a lone warrior who was secretly in Shingen's employ. On the run from the Hand, Yukio and Logan had a brief romantic encounter before he discovered her true dark allegiances. She and Wolverine would meet again launching a bloody crusade that saw him battle hundreds of ninjas from the Hand, as Logan stormed Shingen's home. When Mariko became aware of her father's criminal ties, Logan was able to confront Lord Shingen without fear of disapproval. After a fierce duel, Wolverine managed to run Shingen through, and soon after, he and Mariko became engaged. After Shingen's death, Mariko gained control of his vast criminal empire but her brother, Harada attempted to usurp control.
