You can't possibly believe that he's talking to an insect!
~ Badgley denying that he poisoned Queen Victoria.

Lord Thomas Badgley is the main antagonist of the 2020 film Dolittle, an adaptation of the Doctor Dolittle book series of the same name. He is a chairman of Queen Victoria who schemes with Dr. Blair Mudfly to take over the kingdom and stop Dolittle from reaching the Eden Tree.

He was portrayed by Jim Broadbent who plays Lord Kelvin in Around the World in 80 Days, Wackford Squeers in Nicholas Nickleby, Boss Tweed in Gangs of New York, Frank Butterman in Hot Fuzz, and Madame Gasket in Robots.

Biography[]

Past[]

Badgley became one of the chairmen of Queen Victoria, and also hired Dr. Blair Mudfly to help him to take over the kingdom. To begin his scheme, he secretly poisoned Victoria with nightshade, making her dangerously ill.

Dolittle[]

Badgley is one of the people in the room who is seemingly concerned over the Queen falling ill, not wanting anyone to know about what he's done. Eventually, Dolittle discovers that the Queen was poisoned by nightshade, so he sets off with his crew to find the Eden Tree, the only cure of the poison, so he sends Mudfly to go after them in his warship, which is overheard by the walking stick named Styx.

After Mudfly falls down a hole and the crew returns with the fruit from the Eden Tree, Dolittle exposes Badgley as the one responsible for poisoning the Queen, and a riot ensues. The Queen's life is saved when sap from the fruit drops into her lips, and she recovers from the poison. She then has Badgley locked up in the tower for his treachery.

Personality[]

At first, Badgley appears to be a generous and honorable individual who is concerned over Queen Victoria's life, but it is a ruse to hide his true nature: that of a treacherous backstabber, as he was the one who poisoned the Queen to take her crown by force. He doesn't seem to care for anyone's wellbeing other than his own, as he is unfazed when Mudfly doesn't return and denies having poisoned the Queen in the first place when exposed by Dolittle.

Trivia[]

  • Though Mudfly is a more personal threat to Dolittle, Badgley was the one behind the events of the movie because he ordered Mudfly to stop him from reaching the Eden Tree in the first place.
