Lorenzo Calligari is the supporting antagonist of the 1994 giallo film Madness, also known as Eyes Without a Face. Calligari is a reporter and the stalker of Giovanna Dei, a comic book writer whose publications result in murders.
He's portrayed by Fausto Lombardi.
Biography[]
Calligari originally presented as yet another reporter with scathing outrage against Doctor Dark, a masked supervillain and killer of babysitters, as a serial killer was murdering babysitters as Doctor Dark would. He later snuck into Giovanna's office, giving her flowers and apologizing for his outburst. In between, Calligari made onscene phone calls to Giovanna while quoting from her books.
Calligari was arrested once he dressed as Doctor Dark in an attack on Nico Manelli, Giovanna's agent and boyfriend. Calligari was committed to psychiatric custody after having a psychotic break and confesaing to the murders. A private study with Doctor Dark memorabilia, photos of Giovanna, and dolls which Calligari mutilated confirmed he was indeed the stalker. However, Giovanna herself would later be revealed as the killer.
