Oh, dear. Another dogged contender... Welcome, unkindled one. Purloiner of cinders. Mind you, the mantle of Lord interests me none. The Firelinking curse, the legacy of Lords -- let it all fade into nothing. You've done quite enough, now have your rest.
~ Prince Lothric to the Ashen One.

The Twin Princes, composed of Lorian, Elder Prince and Lothric, Younger Prince, are the main antagonists of the 2016 action role-playing game Dark Souls III.

They are the twin sons of King Oceiros and Queen Gwynevere and the final of the five Lords of Cinder encountered by the Ashen One. Originally destined to fulfill their duties of continuing the Age of Fire and to keep the world in balance, the princes' abandonment of their duties is what set the events of the game into motion.

Lothric was voiced by Harry Lister Smith, who also voiced Dark Sun Gwyndolin in Dark Souls. Meanwhile, Lorian remained mute for his entire appearance.

Biography[]

Lorian and Lothric, alongside their youngest brother Ocelotte, were born into royalty as the sons of King Ocerios and Queen Gwynevere, the rulers of the kingdom of Lothric.

Being the eldest of his siblings, Lorian was raised and trained as a mighty knight with remarkable battle prowess. He received his family's ancient brass armor, which has been handed down for generations, along with a crown that is patterned with flame, symbolizing the royal family's tradition of Firelinking. On the battlefield, Lorian proved to be a proficient army commander, as he led a war against the remnants of the Chaos Demons, who invaded the kingdom so as to rekindle the Flame of Chaos to preserve their race, due to having declined in the past years. In the end, Prince Lorian was victorious over the invaders and even captured some Chaos Demons to make them slaves of Lothric. Eventually coming face-to-face with the Demon Prince, Lorian defeated him in single-combat, but in the process, his greatsword was permanently scorched with the Chaos Flame while his armor was stained black.

Lothric, being the younger son, was born a shriveled, frail, and sickly child, but despite his condition he was designated at birth to be the one to fuel the First Flame as the destined Lord of Cinder and is viewed as the royal family's last hope, due to the obsession of generations of Lothric rulers to produce worthy champions to continue the Age of Fire. To prepare Lothric for the anticipated journey to the Kiln of the First Flame, and for his encounter with the Soul of Cinder, the guardian of the First Flame, Lothric was given a sacred platinum sword that was crafted and blessed by the High Priestess with powerful magic. Meanwhile, his father King Oceiros began a massive propaganda campaign around his son, in which he named Lothric after the kingdom while statues were constructed depicting him with his sword ready to accomplish his task. In addition, his throne was prepared at the Firelink Shrine in advance.

Despite the royal family's efforts, they were all for naught when Lothric continued to remain frail and shriveled, never growing out of his baby clothes and being unable to grow to be a strong and healthy man. Moreover, Aldia, the first of the scholars of the Grand Archives, secretly became Lothric's mentor, and possibly divulged his skepticism of the nature of the Age of Fire to the young Prince, which may have influenced Lothric to resent his role, due to everyone knowing that he would be the one to do it and thus never being allowed any sort of choice or say in the matter. Despite his frail state, he became a talented sorcerer, being skilled with powerful and refined magic spells. Having realized that the prince would never improve nor recover from his condition, the royal family desperately turned to acts that proved to be abhorrent and repulsive all in a bid to produce a worthy champion, even if it means having to create something Inhuman. For unknown reasons, they cursed Lothric by cursing his soul to be bound together with the soul of his brother Lorian, possibly with the intention of allowing the twins to share their respective strengths with each other. Because of the curse he now bore, Lothric has been bed-ridden his entire life and can barely move on his own, and Lorian was rendered mute, crippled and probably severely brain-damaged after embracing his brother's curse.

Eventually, the Twin Princes became disillusioned and misanthropic over their destined duties along with the whole affair, and they decided to just let the Age of Dark come, rather than sacrifice themselves to the First Flame. As a result, they abandoned their posts and retreated to their chamber to await the end of the world. With their withdrawal, Ludleth of Courland became the only one willing to lend his remaining strength to the flame, as Yhorm the Giant, Aldrich and the Abyss Watchers all forsook the First Flame for various reasons. The Twin Princes' abandonment of their duty had immense consequences; While their kingdom was consumed by war after they barricaded themselves, King Oceiros was driven mad by his failures to produce a worthy champion, which led him to abandon his kingdom and turn to the dark arts, becoming a devoted follower of a cult worshipping the dragon Seath the Scaleless, becoming a dragon in the process, albeit imperfect and distorted.

Lorian and Lothric eventually met their end at the hands of the Ashen One when they arrived in the throne room. The Ashen One fought Lorian first and later both of the princes when Lothric joined the battle. When the Twin Princes perished, Lothric spent his last moments warning the Ashen One that they remained among the accursed.

Quotes[]

~ Lothric reviving Lorian, initiating the second phase of the battle.
This spot marks our grave, but you may rest here too, if you like.
~ Lothric should he and Lorian kill the player.
Mark my words, Ashen One... You remain among the accursed...

Trivia[]

  • Lorian is weak to magic, lightning, and frost while Lothric is weakest to physical attacks.
  • Continuously defeating Lorian in the second phase without defeating Lothric makes him resurrected with slightly less health, going up to half of his normal health.
  • The Soul of the Twin Princes can be consumed for 20,000 souls or transposed with Ludleth to create either Lothric's Holy Sword or Lorian's Greatsword.
